Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer (扫盲志愿者). The
training I received, though excellent, did not tell me how it was to work with a real student, however.
When I began to discover what other people's lives were like because they could not read, I realized the
    true importance of reading.
My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three. In the first lesson, I found out she
walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn't know which bus to take.
When I told her I would get her a bus schedule. She told me it would not help because she could not read
it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket, because she couldn't always remember what she needed. Since she did not know words, she could not write out a shopping list. Also, she could
only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a different label, she would not recognize it as the
    product she wanted.
As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie's self-confidence, which encouraged her to
continue in her studies. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the
supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. She sat with him before he
went to sleep and together they would read bedtime stories. When his eyes became wide with excitement as she read, pride was written all over her face, and she began to see how her own hard work in learning
to read paid off. As she described this experience, I was proud of myself as well. I found that helping
Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.
As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact, I may have
learned more from the experience than Marie did.
    1. Why didn't Marie go to the supermarket by bus at first?
    A. Because she liked to walk to the supermarket.
    B. Because she lived far away from the bus stop.
    C. Because she couldn't find the right bus.
    D. Because she couldn't afford the bus ticket.
    2. What did the author do last summer?
    A. She worked in the supermarket.
    B. She gave single mothers the help they needed.
    C. She went to a training program to help a literacy volunteer.
    D. She helped someone to learn to read.
    3. What did the writer think of her work as a literacy volunteer?
    A. meaningful
    B. Interesting
    C. Tiring
    D. Touching

The black robin is one of the world's rarest birds. It is a small, wild bird, and it lives only on the island
of Little Mangere, off the coast of New Zealand. In 1967 there were about fifty black robins; in 1977
there were fewer than ten. These are the only black robins left in the world. The island has many other
birds, of different kinds, large and small; these seem to multiply very happily.
Energetic steps are being taken to preserve the black robin. Detailed studies are going on, and a public appeal for money has been made. The idea is to buy another island nearby as a special home, a "reserve",
for threatened wild life, including black robins. The organizers say that Little Mangere should then be
supplied with the robin's food-it eats only one kind of seed. Thousands of the required plants are at
present being cultivated in New Zealand. The public appeal is aimed at the conscience of mankind, so
that the wild black robin will not die out and disappear form the earth in our time at least.
Is all this concern a waste of human effort? Is it any business of ours whether the black robin survives
or dies out? Are we losing our sense of what is reasonable and what is unreasonable?
In the earth's long, long past, hundreds of kinds of creatures have evolved, risen to a degree of
success-and died out. In the long, long future, there will be many new and different forms of life. Those
creatures that adapt themselves successfully to what the earth offers will survive for a long time. Those
that fail to meet the challenges will disappear early. This is nature's proven method of operation.
The rule of selection-"the survival of the fittest"-is the one by which human beings have themselves
arrived on the scene. We, being one of the most adaptable creatures the earth has yet produced, may last
longer than most. You may take it as another rule that when, at last, human beings show signs of dying
out, no other creature will extend a paw to put off our departure. On the contrary, we will be hurried
out. For nature, tough fair, is a hard-hearted mistress. She has no favorites.
Life seems to have grown too tough for black robins. I leave you to judge whether we should try to
    do something about it.
1.The black robin is dying out mainly because        .
    A. people have been very careless about its survival
    B. the appeal for money has come at the wrong time
    C. the other birds on the island have destroyed it
    D. its only food supply is far from enough on Little Mangere
2.In Paragraph 3, the writer puts forward three questions to        .
    A. make a comparison
    B. make an argument
    C. present his own idea
    D. introduce a topic
    3. The writer's attitude towards the protection of the black robins is         .
    A. passive
    B. active
    C. unconcerned
    D. optimistic

    根据短文内容,从下面的A-F选项中能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。
    A. Smiling relieves stress
    B. Smiling attracts people
    C. Smiling helps stay positive.
    D. Smiling defeats diseases.
    E.  Smiling changes mood.
    F. Smiling builds up confidence.
    1. ____
Like a flower with a pleasant scent, your smile can draw people close enough to see inside you.
That's Smile Power. A smile has the power to radiate the qualities that make you beautiful on the
inside-kindness, friendship, honesty, respect, patience, and self-control. So please give smiles away
like flowers. Let your smile be an invitation for others to get to know the great person behind the smile.
Then let people see that your smile doesn't stop at your mouth. It goes all the way to your heart. On the
other hand, we are drawn to people who smile and we want to know a smiling person and figure out
what is so good. Frowns, scowls and grimaces all push people away-but a smile draws them in.
    2. _____
Next time you are feeling down, try putting on a smile. There's a good chance you mood will change
for the better. Smiling can trick the body into helping you to have a good feeling. So smile is a good state
of mind, you have a smile, then you will have a better feelings. So when you are smiling you lighten up the
room, change the moods of others, and make things happier.
    3. _____
The muscles we use to smile lift the face, making a person appear younger. Don't go for a face lift, just
try smiling your way through the day-you'll look younger. Then you will feel better and have more
confident, thus are more likely to be promoted, and more likely to be approached. Put on a smile at
meetings and appointments and people will react to you differently because of your confidence.
    4.  _____
Stress can really show up in our faces. Smiling helps to prevent us from looking tired, worn down,
and overwhelmed. When you are stressed, take time to put on a smile. This is because when you smile,
there is a measurable reduction in your blood pressure. You can sit for a few minutes, take a reading.
Then smile for a minute and take another reading while still smiling. You will be happy to see your stress
    disappears quickly.
    5. _____
Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. It's hard. When we smile our body is
sending the rest of us a message that "Life is Good!" Stay away from depression, stress and worry by
smiling. So smile is a positive state of mind, every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift
to that person, a beautiful thing and then other people will also answer your smile.

This summer I will go to study at the London University, but I don't know how to adapt myself for
    the new life.
I hear that many freshmen are at loss what to do when they are in a new country. Feel lonely and

take well care of themselves in their everyday life. Beside, it is difficult to find a satisfied host. It is more
difficult to fully understand what the teachers teach in class though they speak English all the time.
