Ever felt like destroying the car in front of you when you're
stuck in an endless traffic jam?
Well ,the Spanish company StopStress is offering clients(客户 )
the possibility of doing just that-but in controlled ,safe conditions.
Clients can also destroy computers, mobile phones and TV sets
in what the company calls" destructible therapy" ( therapy : treatment
    of a medical disorder).
"We target the machines that cause the most stress in modern
life,"company co-founder Jorge Arribas said in a telephone inter-
view. "People get rid of stress by screaming and beating the ma-
chines until they are tired out. "he explained.
The company, based in the northern Spanish city of Soria, uses
deserted cars that still work. Heavy-metal music is used to excite
the clients. They are given protective suits and glasses, helmets and
    huge hammers.
Most people's rage only lasts for 5 to 10 minutes. But some go
on for hours : they beat cars on which they've put the names of people
or ideas they would like to get rid of.
"Some even get together to turn the car over, "Arribas says. A
    session costs 60 euros(US $80)per person.
Arribas says the idea came to him when he was having trouble
    parking his car.
"Dozens of people have used the therapy, which helps people
become aware of their stress level and helps them to slow down,"
    Arribas explained.
"It's better to channel violence in a controlled way than to get
it out on one's husband and wife or in a traffic jam. "he added.
StopStress already has branches in three Spanish cities, and is
planning to extend its market beyond Spain's borders.

In 1997, a group of twenty British women made history. Working
in five teams with four women in each team, they walked to the
North Pole. Apart from one experienced female guide, the other
women were all ordinary people who had never done anything like
this in their lives before. They managed to survive in an environment
and defeated several very experienced men during the same
    period.
Once on the ice, each woman had to ski along while dragging a
sledge (雪橇) weighing over 50 kilos. The Arctic ice was pushed up
into huge piles two or three meters high, and the sledges had to be
pulled up one side and carefully let down the other all on the rough
surface so that they didn't become damaged. The temperature was
always below the freezing point and sometimes strong winds made
walking while pulling so much weight almost impossible. It was also
very difficult for them to put up their tents when they stopped each
    night.
In such conditions ,'the women were making good progress if
they covered fourteen or fifteen kilometers a day. However, part of
the journey was across a frozen sea with moving water underneath
the ice and at some points the team would drift(漂流) back more
than five kilometers during the night. That meant that after walking
in these very severe conditions for ten hours on one day, they had to
spend part of the next day covering the same ground again.
So,how did they manage to succeed? They realized that they
were part of a team. If any one of them didn't pull her sledge or get
her job done, she would endanger the success of the whole expedition.
Any form of selfishness could result in the efforts of everyone
else being completely wasted, so personal feelings had to be put to
one side. At the end of their journey, the women agreed that it was
mental effort far more than physical fitness that got them to the
    North Pole.
    1. The expedition was extraordinary because________.
    A. there was no one to lead it
    B. the women did not have any men with them
    C. it was a new experience for most of the women
    D. the women had not met one another before
    2. On the expedition, the women had to be particularly careful to avoid_______.
    A. falling over on the ice
    B. being left behind
    C. damaging the sledges
    D. getting too cold at night
    3. The women could not cover 15 kilometers a day mainly because______.
    A. they got too tired
    B. the ice was moving
    C. they kept getting lost
    D. the temperatures were too low
    4. The passage seems to tell us that_________.
    A. motivation and teamwork achieve goals
    B. women can do anything they want
    C. it is good to experience difficult conditions
    D. the Arctic conditions are very severe

If you were to walk up to Arthur Bonner and say, "Hey, But
terfly Man, "his face would break into a smile. The title suits him.
    And he loves it.
Arthur Bonner works with the Palos Verdes blue butterfly (蝴
蝶) ,once thought to have died out. Today the butterfly is coming
back-thanks to him. But years ago if you'd told him this was what
he'd be doing someday,he would have laughed," You're crazy. "As
a boy,he used to be "a little tough guy on the streets". At age thirteen,
he was caught by the police for stealing. At eighteen ,he land-
ed in prison for shooting a man.
"I knew it had hurt my morn," Bonner said after he got out of
prison. "So I told myself I would not put my mom through that pain
    again. "
One day he met Professor Mattoni, who was working to rebuild
the habitat(栖息地) for an endangered butterfly called El Segundo
    blue.
"I saw the sign' Butterfly Habitat' and asked, ' How can you
have a habitat when the butterflies can just fly away?' "Bonner recalls.
"Dr. Mattoni laughed and handed me a magnifying glass (放
大镜) ,' Look at the leaves. ' I could see all these caterpillars (蝶的幼
虫)on the plant. Dr. Mattoni explained, 'Without the plant,
    there are no butterflies. '"
Weeks later, Bonner recei.ved a call from Dr. Mattoni, who told
him there was a butterfly that needed help. That was how he met the
Palos Verdes blue. Since then he's been working for four years to
help bring the butterfly back. He grows astragalus, the only plant
the butterfly eats. He collects butterflies and brings them into a lab
to lay eggs. Then he puts new butterflies into the habitat.
The butterfly's population, once almost zero, is now up to 900.
For their work, Bonner and Dr. Mattoni received lots of awards. But
for Bonner,he earned something more:he turned his life around.
For six years now Bonner has kept his promise to stay out of
prison. While he's bringing back the Palos Verdes blue, the butterfly
has helped bring him back, too.

Photographs are everywhere. They decorate (装饰) the walls of
homes and are used in stores for sales of different goods. The news
is filled with pictures of fires, floods, and special events. Photos record
the beauties of nature. They can also bring things close that are
far away. Through photos, people can see wild animals, cities in foreign
lands, and even the stars in outer space. Photos also tell stories.
Reporting the news through photos is called photojournalism.
At times photojournalists tell their stories through a single picture.
At other times, they use a group of pictures to tell a story. Each picture
is like a chapter in a book, which can do more than record the
facts. It can also be a strong force for social change.
Jacob Riis was among the first photojoumalists. He took pictures
of parts of New York City where the poor lived. Riis believed
that poverty(贫穷 )caused crime, and he used photos to help him
prove his point. A few years later, the photos of small children working
in factories by Lewis Hine shocked the public. Hine's pictures
helped bring about laws to protect such children.
Hundreds of pictures may have to be taken in order to get one
or two really good photos. It takes science to have the photo come
out clearly and art to make a photo that has a good design and expresses
feeling. Photojournalists make an actual record of what they
see. A photo, however, can be both a work of art and an actual record.
It can record an important event as a beautiful or exciting picture.
As historical and artistic documents (文献), photos can become
more important over time. Today photojournalists still have
their pictures appear in newspapers and magazines. They also publish
(发表) them in books and on the Internet.
    1. The underlined word"They" in the first paragraph refers to __.
    A. beauties
    B. photos
    C. goods
    D. events
    2. The photos of the small children by Hine show us that photos __.
    A. are also works of art
    B. are popular ways of reporting news
    C. often shock the public
    D. can serve as a force for social change
    3. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. News with pictures is encouraging.
    B. Photos help people improve their life.
    C. News photos mean history in a sense.
    D. People prefer to read news with pictures.
4 The text is mainly about __.
    A. telling the story through pictures
    B. decorating the walls of homes
    C. publishing historical papers
    D. expressing feeling through pictures
