                                          High climbing kid raises hopes
Michael McCarthy climbed to the top of the Willis Tower not long ago. The Tower stands 1451 feet
(442 meters) tall, the highest building in the US.
As he got to the last step, McCarthy almost fell down, but that didn't stop him. The 14-year-old boy
finally finished climbing the 2,109 steps and arrived at the top, where he enjoyed the cheers from the
    crowd.
"I just want to show people that if a kid with no legs can do it, anyone can do it," McCarthy said.
McCarthy, who was born without legs, has to wear prosthetic legs (假肢) and use a set of crutches (拐
杖) to walk. But McCarthy has a strong heart. He believes nothing can stop him from achieving his
    success.
He has been in a karate (空手道) school since he was four years old. When he decided to climb the
Willis Tower, his karate teacher, Jeff Kohn, was moved and offered to help train him. They spent more
than 10 hours practicing climbing stairs and keeping balance with the prostheses and crutches on the steps
every day. "It seems that he never knows what tiredness is. Sometimes, I was so tired that I asked him to
call it a day,"said Kohn. "But he said he was still full of energy and wanted more exercise."
Kohn was with McCarthy for the climb. "I saw the last 10 floors — he went faster," said Kohn. "He's
the most hardworking athlete I've ever trained."
McCarthy said he was proud of himself and that the Tower now holds special meaning. "When I'm
older, I'll point to the building and say 'Look at this building I climbed'." he said.

Here are two stories from different parts of the world. They seem strange but, believe it or not, they
    are all true!
John Lee was an Englishman who refused to be hanged! In 1884 the police said Lee had killed an old
woman who he used to work with. There was nothing to show that Lee had killed the woman. Lee told
the police he hadn't done it, but no one believed him and he was going to be hanged. On the day of the
hanging, however, the door in the floor, through which Lee's body would fall, did not open. They tried
three times but each time the door stayed closed, even though it had worked well the day before. In the
end they sent Lee back to prison, where he lived for the next twenty-two years. At all times, John Lee
said he hadn't killed the woman, and he believed it was the "hand of God" that had saved him from death
    by hanging.
The police in Venezuela (委内瑞拉) in South America followed a man home one night. He was the
thief they wanted to catch. However, half of his house was standing in Venezuela and the other half was
standing in Colombia (哥伦比亚), Venezuela's neighbor. When the police entered the house, the man
ran upstairs to his bedroom, which was in Colombia, and called his lawyer (律师). The Venezuelan
police were not allowed to enter Colombia so they could not enter the bedroom. They asked the police
in Colombia to help. The Colombian police refused to help because the man's crime (罪行)was not a
crime in Colombia. In the end, the Venezuelan police gave up and went back to the police station.

    B. questioned by the police
    C. killed by putting a rope around the neck
    D. kept in a place
    2. What do we know about the door in the floor?
    A. It had opened the day before the hanging.
    B. It had been broken a long time.
    C. After three times, it opened.
    D. John Lee's dead body fell through it.
    3. From the story we know that the thief's bedroom was _____.
    A. in Venezuela B. in Colombia
    C. in neither Venezuela nor Colombia
    D. in both Venezuela and Colombia
    4. Why didn't the Venezuelan police go into the man's bedroom?
    A. They didn't know where it was.
    B. The Venezuelan police were not allowed to enter Colombia.
    C. The police in Colombia told them that they would help.
    D. The police in Colombia told them not to go inside.
    5. The police in Colombia didn't help the police in Venezuela to catch the thief because _____.
    A. they didn't know where he was
    B. the police in Venezuela didn't ask for help
    C. the man's lawyer told them not to help
    D. the man's crime was not a crime in Colombia

Antifreeze is a liquid (液体) that is added to water to keep it from freezing. When water freezes and
turns to ice, it expands (膨胀). The force of water expanding is so great that it will break the hardest
metal. Water is used in car engines (发动机) to keep them cool while they run, and if this water is allowed
to freeze in winter it can break the iron block of the engine. That is why antifreeze is necessary.
Water freezes at 0℃;the usual kind of antifreeze will not freeze until the temperature is -40℃. A
mixture (混合物) of five parts of water and four parts of antifreeze will prevent freezing at -18℃; four
parts of water and five parts of antifreeze reduce this to -22℃.
Alcohol is a kind of good antifreeze, but when the air is running it becomes hot and the alcohol boils
away, so it must be changed very often. Most people use antifreeze that does not boil away when the
engine is running. There are several chemicals that do this. One of the most popular is called ethylene
    glycol.
    1. People use _____ to keep car engines cool.
    A. antifreeze

    C. alcohol
    D. ethylene glycol
    2. The usual kind of antifreeze freezes at _____.

    C. -22℃

    A. keep alcohol in water
    B. stop ice from becoming water
    C. make the freezing point of water lower
    D. raise the freezing point of water
    4. Besides alcohol, _____ is another kind of popular antifreeze.
    A. water
    B. ethylene glycol

MSG(monosodium glutamate) is a food additive (食品添加剂), which has been widely used by many
food factories all over the world since it appeared first in Japan in 1909.
MSG is a substance that is added to some food to improve its original (原先的) taste and color. It is
used in foods around the world such as cakes, bread, frozen meats, fish and vegetables. In the beginning,
people thought MSG was safe just like salt and sugar. However, in 1968 some people reported they
seemed to have bad reactions (反应) to MSG after having had a meal at a restaurant. They included
headaches and quick heartbeat (心跳). It was also reported that MSG excited a person's brain and
caused his death in Japan. Scientists think that MSG may lead to many neurological disorders (神经
紊乱). In mice studies done by a university, the evidence showed the mice didn't want to eat the food
    including MSG.
Today many food companies "hide" MSG on food labels (标签) by using different names. If you see
"natural flavorings", "hydrolyzed protein" and "spices" in a food label, you are probably seeing a hidden
way to "report" MSG in a food label. Every time we have a meal in a restaurant, we always feel the food
very delicious to taste, but sometimes it is dangerous for our health because some poisonous food
additives have been added to the food.
To protect people's health, our governments, from central to local, are taking actions to stop factories
    producing poisonous food additives.
    1. Monosodium Glutamate is _____.
    A. a food
    B. an additive
    C. a factory
    D. a country
    2. MSG is often used in _____.
    A. frozen meats
    B. cups
    C. clothes
    D. book covers
    3. The examples in the second paragraph tell us _____.
    A. the food including MSG is delicious
    B. people like to eat in a restaurant
    C. mice like eating the food including MSG
    D. MSG is not safe sometimes
    4. If you see "natural flavorings"," hydrolyzed protein" and "spices" in a food label, you will know _____.
    A. you must eat the food in a hidden way
    B. the food label must be hidden
    C. MSG is probably added to the food
    D. you must report the food to your parents
    5. The underlined word "substance" in the article means _____.
