The old man walked with a cane (拐杖) slowly into the restaurant. His poor jacket, patched (打补丁的) trousers, and worn-out shoes made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning breakfast crowd. Unforgettable were his pale blue eyes that sparkled like diamonds, large rosy cheeks, and thin lips that
    held a steady smile.
He walked toward a table by the window. A young waitress watched him and ran over to him, saying,  "Here, Sir. Let me give you a hand with that chair."
Without a word, he smiled and nodded a thank you. She pulled the chair away from the table.
Supporting him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. Then she pushed the table up close to him, and leaned his cane against the table where he could reach it.
In a soft, clear voice he said, "Thank you, Miss."
"You're welcome, Sir." She replied. "My name is Mary. I'll be back in a moment. If you need anything, just wave at me."
After he had finished a hearty meal of pancakes, bacon, and hot lemon tea, Mary brought him the change, helping him up from his chair and out from behind the table. She handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, "Come back and see us, Sir!"
He nodded a thank you and said softly with a smile, "You are very kind!"
When Mary went to clean his table, she was shocked. Under his plate she found a business card and a note written on the napkin, under which was a $ 100 bill.
The note on the napkin read, "Dear Mary, I respect you very much, and you respect yourself, too. It
shows by the way you treat others. You have found the secret of happiness. Your kind gestures will shine
    through those who meet you."
The man she had served was the owner of the restaurant. This was the first time that she, or any of his
employees, had seen him in person.
    1. Mary ran over to the old man because _____.
    A. the old man was the boss of the restaurant

Women have jumped ahead of men for the first time in using the Internet to do their holiday shopping,
according to a study published last week in the US.
For Years men have been more likely to shop on the Internet than women, but during the 2011 holiday season 58 percent of those making online purchases (购买) were women.
"It shows how mainstream the Internet is becoming", said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project group, which carried out the study.
Rainie said it was only a matter of time before women shoppers caught up with men. This is because
women traditionally make decisions about spending.
Users were more likely to shop online to save time. Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 were responsible for some of the most dramatic increases in the online gift-buying population this time around.
However, three-quarters of the US Internet users did not buy holiday gifts online in 2011. They worried about credit card security(安全), or just compared online prices with off-line prices, then dashed off to the shops to get the best deals.
"But even if shoppers don't buy online, websites are becoming promotion tools for stores," said Dan Hess, vice president of Comscore Networks Inc. Hess said that actually most stores' websites can make customers fully believe the security of their credit card numbers. And most are able to ensure that gifts arrive
on time. "It's all about making the shopping experience more efficient, more reliable and more
    comfortable." Hess said.
    1. Which of the following statements is true?
    A. More women shopped online than men in 2011.
    B. There were fewer women online shoppers than men in 2011.
    C. Most of the Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 are women.
    D. People in the US were more likely to buy gifts online.
    2. From the passage we can infer that________.
    A. men usually decide how to spend money in the family
    B. women usually decide what to buy in the family
    C. the Internet is used in all the shops.
    D. more and more shops will sell their goods online.
    3. According to Dan Hess, shopping online is _______.
    A. unsafe
    B. convenient
    C. a waste of time
    D. cheaper
    4. What can we know from the passage?
    A. American people only buy gifts in holidays.
    B. Shopping online is fun for women.
    C. Shopping off-line provides better service.
    D. Young people like to do gift-shopping online.

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong
signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree.
For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with
people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talk", usually over a glass of tea, before
they do any job. In many European countries - like the UK or France - people find it easier to build up a
lasting working relationship at restaurants or caf?s rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had
expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead, there was an uncomfortable
silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I
realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through
words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and
German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly.
We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite
against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a
wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.
    1. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _________.
    A. the English prefer to make long speeches
    B. too many words are of no use
    C. even talk and silence can be culturally different
    D. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature
    2. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?
    A. By sharing different ways of life.
    B. By accepting different habits.
    C. By recognizing different values.
    D. By speaking each other's languages.
    3. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Multicultural Environment
    B. Cross-Cultural Differences
    C. How to Understand Each Other
    D. How to Build Up a Relationship

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.
Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more worried about how
the grizzly bear and mountain lion can cross the road.
"Millions of animals die each year on U.S. roads," the Federal Highway Administration reports.  In
fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the U.S. today. The main reason? Roadkill.
"Eco-passages" may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over
and under roads. "These eco-passages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid road accidents," said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society.
But do animals actually use the eco-passages? The answer is yes. Paul Beier of Northern Arizona
University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an eco-passage that went under a highway.  This
showed that the lions used the passage.
Builders of eco-passages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and
around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals like salamanders (火蜥蜴) and grizzly bears are
    using the bridges and underpasses.
The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might
    see an animal overpass!
    1. The writer uses the example of "ocelots" to show that _______.
    A. wild animals have become more dangerous
    B. the driving condition has improved greatly
    C. the measure for protecting wildlife fails to work
    D. an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidents
    2. From the story, we know an eco-passage is ________.
    A. an underground path for cars
    B. a fence built for the safety of the area
    C. a bridge for animals to get over a river
    D. a path for animals to cross the road
    3. When the writer says that "animals seem to be catching on"(Para. 6), he means __.
    A. animals begin to realize the dangers on the road
    B. animals begin to learn to use eco-passages
    C. animals are crossing the road in groups
    D. animals are increasing in number
    4. The writer asks visitors and drivers to look around when traveling because _____.
    A. wild animals may attack cars
    B. wild animals may jam the road
    C. they may see wild animals in the park
    D. they may see wild animals on eco-passages
    5. The best title for the passage is ________.
    A. Special bridges help animals cross the road
    B. Endangered animals increase because of roadkill
    C. Animals fail to cross the road
    D. Take steps to protect animals in danger

For more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets. Most of
these searches have been done over the radio. The hope is that someone in outer space may be trying to
get in touch with us. Scientists also have sent radio and television messages on spaceships traveling through space, on the chance that someone may answer such messages.
Scientists are using powerful radio telescopes to listen to signals from about 1, 000 stars, all within 100
light years of the earth. In addition, they will scan the entire sky to "listen" for radio messages from more
distant stars. Using a computer, they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at one time.
Scientists are looking for any signal that stands out from the background noise.
Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy(银河星系), scientists find that 5% are like our sun.
Perhaps half of them have a planet like the earth. Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the
star for temperatures to be right for the evolution(进化) of life. Based on the inhabitable (适于居住的)
planets in our galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets
    support some life.
However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent life exists on other planets. Some believe that
twenty years of searching without any intelligible messages shows that no one is out there. They say that
the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely.
Other scientists believe that our search hasn't been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent
life exists in our galaxy. If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep
    looking.
    1. According to the passage, how many planets in our galaxy might be inhabitable?
