The Plot Against America is a novel by Philip Roth published in 2004. Instead of reconstructing real
historical events, Philip Roth offers something bolder: a reconstruction of imagined events, a "what if...?"
that reads like a "what really happened".
Just suppose...that the air hero Charles Lindbergh, the man who made the first solo transatlantic flight
in 1927, who earned huge sympathy when his baby son was kidnapped and murdered five years later,
who called Hitler "a great man", just suppose that he'd run for president in November 1940, and took
advantage of the feelings that undoubtedly existed then (No more war! Never again will young Americans die on foreign soil!), and that instead of Roosevelt being elected for a third term and taking America into
Europe to fight the Nazis, Lindbergh won a landslide victory. And then he signed non-aggression treaties
with Germany and Japan, and introduced a set of anti-semitic(反犹太人的) measures which were a
betrayal of the rights and liberties in the constitution(宪法) and yet they were accepted by the mass of
ordinary citizens and even by some Jews.
The narrator is Philip Roth, aged seven, and the family at the book's centre are his family-father
Herman, mother Bess and brother Sandy. The Roths understand the threat posed by Lindbergh, but
each member of the family responds differently. Early on, there's a trip to see the sights of Washington,
where the Roths find their pre-booked hotel room has become mysteriously unavailable. An obvious
case of anti-semitism, Herman shouts, and a violation of the principle that "All men are created equal".
But his loudmouth protests embarrass Bess. Already there's a pressure to pretend not to see what's
going on. Further disagreements arise when Sandy disappears for the summer for an "apprenticeship"(学徒期) with a Kentucky tobacco farmer. Worse, after he successfully encourages other Jewish city boys
to follow his example, he's invited to a reception at the White House through his aunt, Bess's sister
Evelyn. While Herman refuses Sandy permission to attend, Evelyn defends Lindbergh as a freely elected
    democrat.

  •      When The Grapes of Wrath(愤怒) was published on March 14, 1939, it created a national
sensation(轰动) for its description of the destructive effects of the Great Depression(大萧条) of the
1930s. By the end of April, it was selling 2,500 copies a day-a remarkable number considering the
hard economic times. In May, the novel was a number-one best-seller, selling at a rate of 10,000
copies a week. By the end of 1939, close to a half million copies had been sold.
John Steinbeck was shocked by the tremendous response to his novel. Almost overnight, he found
himself involved in a great national debate over the migrant labor problem. Many people were shocked
by the poverty and hopelessness of the story, and others denied that such circumstances could happen in
America. Even people who had never read a book before bought a copy of The Grapes of Wrath. At $2.75 per copy, it was affordable and quickly sold out.
However it was banned and burned in Buffalo, New York; East Saint Louis, Illinois; and Kern
County, California, where much of the novel is set. In fact, the novel remains one of the most frequently
banned books in the United States. The book was criticized sharply in Congress by Representative Lyle
Boren of Oklahoma, who called the novel's description of migrant living conditions a lie. Charges were
made that "obscenity"(淫秽) had been included in the book in large part to sell more copies. Eventually,
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt stepped in to praise the book and defend Steinbeck against his critics. In
1940, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize.
The popularity of the novel has endured(持久). It is estimated that it has sold fifteen million copies
    since its publication. For almost sixty years, Steinbeck's novel has been a classic in American literature;
it has been translated into several languages, including French, German, and Japanese. The Grapes of

  •      The Diary of a Young Girl is a book based on the writings from a diary written by Anne Frank
while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
Anne Frank began to keep a diary on her thirteenth birthday, 12 June 1942, three weeks before
going into hiding with her mother Edith, father Otto sister Margot and four other people. With the
assistance of a group of  Otto Frank 's trusted colleagues they remained hidden for two years and one
month. They were arrested in 1944 and sent to separate Nazi concentration camps. Anne Frank finally
died of typhus(斑疹伤寒) in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp shortly (about two weeks) before
    liberation by British
troops in April 1945. Of the group of eight, only Otto Frank, Anne's father, survived the war. After the
war, he got back the diary that was saved and kept by his friend.
When Otto Frank read his daughter's diary, he was astonished. "I never knew my little Anne was so
deep". Anne Frank's story has become an example of Jewish suffering under Adolf Hitler, and a warning
of the consequences of racism and persecution(迫害).
There has been guess about the identity of Kitty, who in Anne's revised diary is the only receiver of
her letters. It was once thought that the name referred to Kitty Egyedi, a prewar friend of Frank's.
However, Kitty Egyedi said in an interview that she was flattered by the assumption but doubted the
diary was addressed to her: "Kitty became so idealized and started to lead her own life in the diary.
The name ... is not meant to be me."
The character's fictional(虚构的) origin was proved undoubtedly later. Anne had expressed the
desire in the introduction of her diary for one person that she could call her truest friend, that is, a person
to whom she could confide her deepest thoughts and feelings. She observed that she had many "friends",
but (by her own definition) no true, dear friend with whom she could share her innermost thoughts.
In fact, the closest friend Anne had during her tragically short life was her diary, "Kitty", for it was only to "Kitty" that she entrusted her innermost thoughts.

    1. From the passage, we can know that __________.
    A. Anne was born on 12 June 1928

  •      I am not really much of a diet fan, my weight has never been an issue. I eat whatever I want, when I
want. But as Pamela McDonald explains diet is not merely a method for controlling weight, but has a
significant influence on health and quality of life.
I can hardly imagine that living on fried bacon would be a good way to lose weight and promote good
overall health. Likewise a steady diet of cabbage soup would likely become somewhat monotonous(单调乏味的) after a couple of days.
Pamela McDonald takes a different approach, there is no one-size-fits-all diet, different people need
different things. Although all humans are intrinsically(本质地) composed of the same material, the building blocks, our genes, are subtlety different.
The author maintains that one particular part of a person's DNA, something called the APO E gene,
has much to do with how our body tolerates foods of different types. This gene comes in 8 varieties and
depending on the variety the food requirements are different. This has little to do with weight loss, and has more to do with overall good health. Weight gain is not a 'problem' but rather a symptom. A diet alone
will not resolve the entire problem, it is merely one part of the larger picture.
I have to admit that parts of The APO E Gene Diet were a little heavy going, I appreciate that the
author felt the requirement to back up her claims with some scientific data, but for the lay(外行的) man
it makes for some rather difficult reading.
The second half of the book, is recipes, now this is something I do understand! She has created some
very innovative dishes, and certainly more than one that had me feeling hungry just reading them. My
favorite of them is a very traditional English dish the Cornish Pasty.
An interesting book and one that people should read, you can get your copy from Amazon.
    1. What's the writing purpose of the passage?
A.To help readers realize the importance of diets.
B.To share her reviews of a book about diets.
C.To advertise for the Amazon online bookstore.
D.To introduce a new way of losing weight.
    2. What can we learn from Pamela McDonald's book?
    A. Different people need different foods to keep fit.
    B. Humans are completely made up of the same genes.
    C. Different APO E gene decides if you are healthy.
    D. Diets alone can successfully help fat people lose weight.
    3. What's the shortage of Pamela McDonald's book?
    A. It advises people to eat some repeated diets every day to keep slim.
    B. It supports its arguments with convincing scientific explanation.
    C. Parts of it are difficult for common readers to understand well.
    D. It is a heavy book that is too long for many readers to finish.
    4. What CANNOT we infer from the passage?
    A. What food we need is decided by the environment we're brought up.
    B. Gaining weight indicates there may be something wrong with your health.
    C. The writer is deeply attracted by the dishes introduced in the book.
    D. You can learn how to make the Cornish Pasty from the book.
    5. We can use the following words to describe Pamela McDonald's book EXCEPT____________?
    A. interesting
    B. innovative
    C. persuasive
    D. humourous
  •      Since the beginning of winter break, I have been committed to doing lots of the things I could not do
    while school was in session.
One of the Oscar-nominated (提名的) movies I’ve seen this winter break is Slum-dog Millionaire.
Hopefully readers will also have an opportunity to enjoy the movie the way I have halfway around the
    globe!
Slum-dog Millionaire is about a poor boy from the slums (贫民窟), Jamal, who ends up winning the
grand prize in an Indian show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". The night before he answers the
prize-winning question, Jamal is captured by the police and tortured (拷打). They don’t believe a
slumdog like Jamal could answer seven questions correctly and possibly win 20 million rupees (卢比)!
But, as the movie unfolds, Jamal reveals (透露) how he found the answers to each of the questions.
Viewers also learn about Jamal's childhood, his selfish older brother Salim, and his childhood lover,
    Latika.
The movie’s point, however, is not just to tell a typical story of the underdog (弱者) who becomes a
hero. The director also uses Slum-Dog Millionaire to give viewers a taste of India. The movie begins in
Jamal’s childhood home in the slums of India. The place where he and his family lived reminds one of the
hutongs that used to make up a large part of Old Beijing. Jamal and his brother grow and travel across
India, meanwhile surviving as slum-dogs and cheaters, and India ages with them. By the time Jamal is 17
or 18, his old home has been replaced by a giant skyscraper (摩天大楼) financial center. Jamal and
Salim take a moment to reminisce (回忆) about their old lives, as they stand high up in a skyscraper that
is still under construction. The view from above reminded me of a similar view I had just two years ago in China: I was standing there in the living room of a family friend’s modern apartment, looking out through
a window down to the shacks (简陋的房屋) below just next to the building complex. It was amazing
how affluence and poverty could live so close together.
So, what was most appealing about the movie to me and my Indian friends was how we could relate
to the scenarios (情节) presented in the movie. More important than the plot was the window onto the
social and economic situations in Asia that it provided.
By Jennifer, 16, New Jersey, US
    1. Which of the following is TRUE about the movie?
    A. Jamal finally won a big prize after struggling hard to earn an honest living.
    B. Suspected of cheating, Jamal was arrested by the police before winning the prize.
    C. Jamal and his brother recalled their past standing where it used to be their home.
    D. Jamal remained in his childhood home in the slums before he was 17 or 18.
    2. Viewers can learn from the movie EXCEPT__________.
    A. Jamal's childhood and his bitter experience of wandering across the country.
    B. The rapid social changes and economic development in India.
    C. The poor life of people in the slums against the prosperity of cities in Asia.
    D. The secret of becoming a millionaire through personal struggle.
    3. Why does the movie appeal to the writer?
    A. It's a typical story of the underdog who becomes a hero, which the writer admires most.
    B. It's an Oscar-nominated movie that helps the writer understand the nature of human.
    C. It has an exciting and complicated plot that attracts the writer very much.
    D. It reminds the writer of her experience in China and helps her know about Asian countries.
    4. What can we infer from the reading passage?
    A. The writer is now studying in a school in China.
    B. The movie will win the Oscar because of the social problems presented in it.
    C. The writer is surprised at the gap between the rich and poor in developing countries.
    D. The movie is only welcomed by Americans who have Indian friends.
    5. What is the main purpose of writing the passage?
    A. To introduce a movie to readers and share her views about it.
    B. To persuade more viewers to go to the cinema to see the movie.
    C. To express the writer’s enthusiasm towards Asia and its culture.
    D. To reveal the true social reality in the developing countries.

  •      A few years I was on a bicycle trip when I got off my bike for a rest. I sat down on the grass. A few
seconds later, I was covered in ants. They were swarming all over me so I got up and brushed them off.
It was a strange experience but I soon forgot about it.
A couple of years later, I was living in Jordan. I had just moved into a modern flat and was unpacking
plates when I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. I looked over at the kitchen drawer and
there was a cockroach(蟑螂) crawling out of it. I screamed. Then I grabbed a can of insecticide and
sprayed it on the cockroach. He ran under the nearby bathroom door. It took me three days before I
found the courage to open the bathroom door to see if he was still alive. He wasn't.
Why did I react so violently to one lone insect when a closer encounter with hundreds of ants hardly
affected me? The answer is easy: because cockroaches are creepy crawlies(令人害怕的爬虫) and ants
aren't. Creepy crawlies are those little bugs which provoke feelings such as apprehension(忧虑), anxiety
or aversion(讨厌) - they make your skin crawl.
Did you know that some people feel such a fear of bugs that it becomes a phobia(恐惧)?
Psychologists have offered many explanations. Some say we associate them with dirt and disease. Or
that these are life forms that are so alien to us, that we find them repulsive(排斥的) for their dissimilarity.
Insects, however, don't follow our rules - they just do what they want and invade our space.
Unfortunately, although insects and bugs have been a successful animal species up to now, many of them,
like many other species nowadays, are under threat of extinction. Entomologists(昆虫学家) warn that
this could upset entire ecosystems and lead to all kinds of disastrous consequences. So my plea to you is:
the next time you feel the urge to stamp on, splatter or spray a creepy crawly, give a thought to the planet
    and stop.
    1. Why did the author mention the ants in the beginning?
    A. Because the experience with the ants presents a sharp contrast to that with the cockroach later.
    B. Because the author wants to show her preference to the ants and her dislike for the cockroach.
    C. Because both ants and cockroaches are creepy crawlies that the author dislikes.
    D. Because meeting the ants is an unusual experience that the author can hardly forget.
    2. What does "insecticide" in the second paragraph probably mean?
    A. A kind of fruit juice.
    B. A kitchen knife.
    C. Liquid for killing insects.
    D. Cleanser for the bathroom.
    3. How does the author feel about the bugs like cockroaches?
    A. The author doesn't mind the contact with those harmless small creatures.
    B. They make the author feel so awful that they should be killed.
    C. They invade our space and become a threat to humans.
    D. They still deserve a place for keeping the balance of the nature.hundreds of ants.
    4. Which of the following is NOT the reason why the cockroach makes the author's skin crawl?
    A. It looks so strange and different that the author can't accept its appearance.
    B. It can make the author feel sick and cause a strong dislike.
    C. The author may relate it to something dirty or disease at the sight of it.
    D. It reminds the author of the experience of meeting
    5. Which of the following statements about bugs is NOT true according to the passage?
    A. Some people may be frightened so much by bugs that it leads to a psychological barrier in some
    degree.
    B. People can enjoy a cleaner living environment if more bugs like cockroaches are killed.
    C. Many bugs are in danger of extinction so they should be placed under human's protection.
    D. Some bugs are extremely unpleasant that people have a strong wish to destroy them.
  •      Donna is 19 years old and loves animals, which is why I’m always happy to leave my dog with her
when I go on holiday. Donna also helps to train hunting dogs, but recently, her boyfriend told me, she
returned home from a farm in tears after being told to hit some dogs.“She wasn’t being asked to hit them
because they didn’t behave well,” he said.
"She was told to punch these puppies with a closed fist simply to let them know who is boss." Donna
refused. Good for Donna. In my view, you hurt an animal for only two reasons: as a way to teach it an
important lesson, such as not to run into the road; or because you like hurting animals.
Last summer, I attended a horse race. I don't know much about horses, but I was alarmed when I
saw a horse with a huge ulcer(溃疡) on its leg. "Surely this horse won't race?" I asked. I was very
surprised that nobody in the crowd seemed concerned.
The horse began the race, but later it fell heavily. It had broken its leg. The next thing I saw was its
dead body in a bag, being driven past. No one seemed to care, except those who'd bet on it. I know
people care for horse racing, but do they really care for horses? I doubt it.
Oh, but it's tradition, I hear you say. Wouldn't the world be a boring place if we didn't occasionally
hit, shoot and chase animals? Traditions are made by man and can be unmade. It was once acceptable
to kill servants when their master died, to visit the mental hospitals to laugh at the patients, or to watch
    public execution(执行死刑).
Nor should it be forgotten that in our progress to a more civilized world, animals have played an
important role: they have fed us, carried us, worked for us, rescued us, died for us and sometimes just
saved us from loneliness. Surely by now they deserve our kindness. At the very least, they deserve our
    respect.
    1. Donna was asked to hit the young dogs because __________.
    A. they misbehaved
    B. their owner disliked them
    C. people on the farm enjoy hurting them
    D. it was a way to train them to obey people
    2. What does the underlined word "punch" probably mean?
    A. strike
    B. stroke
    C. punish
    D. pump
    3.  What's the writer's purpose in telling the readers the story about the horse?
    A. To explain the traditional horse race to readers.
    B. To prove that the weak horse can't win in the race.
    C. To show that animals are treated unfairly by humans.
    D. To say that people care more for horses than horse racing.
    4.  Which of the following statements is NOT true?
    A. People no longer watch killing criminals in public.
    B. The writer cannot accept anyone who hits the animals.
    C. It was a traditional practice to kill servants for their dead master.
    D. The writer thinks it possible to change the traditions made by men.
    5.  What's the best title of the passage?
    A. No one cares for animals nowadays.
    B. Let's protect the endangered animals.
    C. Show animals the respect they deserve.
    D. The stories between animals and people.
  •      Ask any person who is successful in whatever he or she is doing what motivates him/her, and very
likely the answer will be "goals". Goal Setting is extremely important to motivation and success. So what
motivates you? Why are you in college? If you are in college because that's what your parents want, you
may find it difficult to motivate yourself. Sure, it's possible to succeed with someone else providing the
motivation for you. ("If you graduate from college, I'll give you a car!" or worse "If you don't graduate
from college, you won't get a car.") But motivation that comes from within really makes the difference.
Certainly, you need some intelligence, knowledge base, study skills, and time management skills, but if
you don't have motivation, you won't get far. Think about this analogy. You have a car with a full tank of
gas, a well-tuned engine, good set of tires, quadraphonic CD system, and a sleek, polished exterior(外表). There it sits. This car has incredible potential. (Have you heard that before?) However, until a driver sits
behind the wheel, puts the key in the ignition(点火装置), and cranks it up, the car doesn't function. You
guessed it; the KEY is MOTIVATION.
Interest is an important motivator for a student. So is a desire to learn. When you link these two things
together, you create success. Often success in an endeavor leads to more interest and a greater desire to
learn, creating an upward spiral(螺旋形) of motivation toward a goal you have established.
So be honest with yourself. Are you genuinely interested in being in college? Have you set realistic
goals for yourself? How can you develop the internal motivation that really counts? When it comes to
motivation, KNOWING is not as important as DOING.
    1. Why does the writer give the example of a car in the second paragraph?
    A. Because people can never go far without a good car.
    B. Because a good car motivates some college students to study harder.
    C. Because a good car is a symbol of being a success.
    D. Because motivation leads people to success like it starts a car.
    2. What is the CORRECT understanding of the internal motivation and the external (外部的)
    motivation?
    A. Only the internal motivation can result in success.
    B. Internal motivation outweighs external motivation.
    C. Internal motivation and external motivation has equal importance.
    D. External motivation is enough for people to achieve success.
    3. According to the article the following factors can push people towards their goals EXCEPT
    __________?
    A. interest
    B. the desire to learn
    C. the knowledge of motivation
    D. the sense of success
    4.  What's the main purpose of the article?
    A. To inspire everyone to develop motivation for whatever they are doing.
    B. To motivate college students to set goals for their college life.
    C. To imply that the less motivated college students quit the college.
    D. To call on parents to give up their over-protection of their children.
    5. What may be the writer's advice to the potential readers?
    A. The goals you set for yourself shouldn’t be far beyond your reach.
    B. You needn't attend college if you are really not interested in it.
    C. You should work harder to win praise from others.
    D. Honesty is the best policy to solve problems in your life.
  •      Everyone knows about straight-A students. We see them frequently in TV situation comedies and in
movies like Revenge(复仇) of the Nerds. They get high grades, all right, but only by becoming dull
laborers, their noses always stuck in a book. They are not good at social communication and look
clumsy when it comes to sports.
How, then, do we account for Domenica Roman or Paul Melendres?
Roman is on the tennis team at Fairmont Senior High School. She also sings in the choral group,
serves on the student council(学生会) and is a member of the mathematics society. For two years she
has maintained A's in every subject. Melendres, now a freshman at the University of New Mexico, was
student-body president at Valley High School in Albuquerque. He played soccer and basketball well,
exhibited at the science fair, and meanwhile worked as a reporter on a local television station. Being a
speech giver at the graduation ceremony, he achieved straight A's in his regular classes, plus bonus points
for A's in two college-level courses.
How do super-achievers like Roman and Melendres do it? Brains aren't the only answer. "Top
grades don't always go to the brightest students," declares Herbert Walberg, professor of education at
the University of Illinois at Chicago, who has conducted major studies of super-achieving students.
"Knowing how to make the most of your innate(天赋的) abilities counts for more. Much more."
In fact, Walberg says, students with high I.Q.s sometimes don't do as well as classmates with lower I.Q.s. For them, learning comes too easily and they never find out how to get down.   Hard work isn't the
whole story, either. "It's not how long you sit there with the books open," said one of the many A students we interviewed. "It's what you do while you're sitting." Indeed, some of these students actually put in
fewer hours of homework time than their lower-scoring classmates.
The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can readily
    learn.
    1. The "nerds" can probably be __________.
    A. dull bookworms lacking sports and social skills
    B. successful top students popular with their peers
    C. students with certain learning difficulties
    D. born leaders crazy about social activities
    2. What can we conclude from the first paragraph?
    A. Most TV programs and films are about straight-A students.
    B. People have unfavorable impression of straight-A students.
    C. Everyone knows about straight-A students from TV or films.
    D. Straight-A students are well admired by people in the society.
    3. Some students become super-achievers mainly because ________.
    A. they are born cleverer than others
    B. they worker longer hours on study
    C. they make full use of their abilities
    D. they know the short cut to success
    4. What will be talked about after the last paragraph?
    A. The interviews with more students.
    B. The role I.Q. plays in learning well.
    C. The techniques to be better learners.
    D. The achievements top students make.
    5. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. Students needn't work hard on study any more.
    B. The brightest students can never get top grades.
    C. Top students certainly achieve all-around developments.

  •      There is one type of illness in the world that affects more people than anything else and is very deadly.
If untreated this illness could affect everything you do. What is this illness? Depression. Serious
depression requires professional treatment. Self-induced depression is something each of us can change.
Everyone's circumstances are different, but the causes of self-induced depression are common: low
self-esteem, hurtful thinking and a bad attitude.
So how can we change the way we think, feel, and cultivate a cheerful attitude?
First we must look at ourselves, truly and honestly examining our motives for what we wish to achieve. If you are dissatisfied because you feel you haven't or can't do anything, then one step is needed - to set
    goals.
Always start your goals relatively small and easy to attain. Think of them as sand; one grain may be
insignificant but as a group they form the beach. Once you have set and attained small goals for yourself,
move on to slightly larger, more challenging goals.
It takes more than just setting goals to be happy. It takes positive thinking. How can we attain this?
There are a number of factors that can make us think negatively and one of those is diet.
In my opinion, a person who eats a lot of take out and fast food is feeding their body junk. Start by
eating better foods which give the body much NEEDED minerals. If your physical body is happy, it's
much easier for your mental body or "thinking ability" to be happy.
Next, exercise. A half-hour a day is recommended for positive well being. Then think about good
memories you had, or generally think of things that make you smile. Remember, everything you wear
costs money but to wear a smile is free. A smile can be the difference between an average day and a
    great day.
If you follow these steps, positive change is inevitable.
    1. Which of the statements about depression is TRUE?

    C. we should avoid challenging goals that may lead to failure
    D. people can enjoy happiness only if they set reasonable goals
    3. In order to achieve positive thinking a person should do these things EXCEPT____________.
    A. set challenging goals
    B. eat healthier foods
    C. exercise half an hour a day
    D. always wear a smile
    4. What can we infer from the reading passage?
    A. Those who can achieve small goals can surely achieve big ones.
    B. Take out and fast food cannot provide people with enough minerals.
    C. You can only exercise half an hour if you want to get rid of depression.
    D. Smile is the cheapest thing compared to other possessions you have.
    5. What's the passage mainly about?
    A. To prove the argument that depression can be changed.
    B. To analyze the danger depression can bring to people.
    C. To introduce to readers how to keep positive thinking.
    D. To recommend some ways to deal with depression.

  •      Most of the teenagers with major depression never get treatment for it, according to a new federal
report. That depressing news comes as no surprise to healthcare professionals, who say that many kids
and parents don't recognize depression’s symptoms(症状). And if they do, it can be difficult or
impossible to get help. This is no small problem; about 2 million teenagers experience clinical depression
each year, an illness that can do harm to school performance and friendships and is a leading cause of
    teen suicide(自杀).
The new report found that just 39 percent of teens with major depression got treatment. Here are
three ways to make sure your child can get over the problem.
Getting diagnosed(诊断). Last month, pediatricians(儿科医生) and family doctors were required
to examine all teenagers for depression. Courtney Jones, a 17-year-old in Portland, Ore., said that the
examination saved her life when she was 14. She didn't recognize that her loss of confidence and sudden
lack of interest in spending time with friends were warning signs. Symptoms of depression include
frequent sadness, decreased interest in activities, and hopelessness.
Finding help. It's no surprise to healthcare professionals that families have a hard time finding
mental-health services; there are only 7,418 child and adolescent psychiatrists(精神科医生) in the
United States, or about 1 for every 10,000 kids. For now, the best first step is to be examined by a
pediatrician or family doctor, and then go to a psychiatrist for treatment and perhaps medication. David
Palmiter, a psychologist, suggests checking out local universities, which often run clinics, as well as
    community mental-health clinics.
         Paying for treatment.
Paying for healthcare is a struggle these days, and mental-health services can
be ever harder to cover. The report found that lack of health insurance coverage was the biggest barrier
to getting help. Only 17.2 percent of teens without health insurance coverage were able to get treatment.
However, there are still ways to find affordable mental-health care that you may not be aware of. In a
word, you should establish a relationship with a doctor, give the doctor a chance to get to know your kid
and help her or him get better.
    1. What are the symptoms of depression for kids?
    a. committing suicide
    b. sudden lack of interest in staying with friends
    c. failing the school examinations
    d. frequently feeling upset  e. feeling desperate for no good reason
    A. a, b, d
    B. b, c, e
    C. a, c, e
    D. b, d, e
    2. The writer uses the case of Courtney Jones to prove that __________.
    A. kids with depression find it difficult to get treatment
    B. it's necessary to examine all teenagers for depression
    C. many American kids are suffering from depression
    D. warning signs can help kids to find their problems
    3. According to the writer, you'd better first have the kid examined by __________.
    A. a pediatrician or family doctor
    B. a psychiatrist or psychologist
    C. a psychiatrist or family doctor
    D. a pediatrician or psychiatrist
    4. What's the main reason why kids with depression do not get help according to the report?
    A. parents' ignorance of the illness
    B. lack of psychiatrists for children
    C. lack of health insurance coverage
    D. difficulties in diagnosing depression
    5. What's the writing purpose of the passage?
    A. To teach kids to recognize depression's symptoms.
    B. To explain the findings of a new report to people
    C. To help parents to have their kids get treatment.
    D. To arose the public's attention to the problem
  •      All across the country, kids are heading back to school. Despite advice from the nation's secretary
of health and human services, recess(课间休息) and physical education have in many schools been
cut back or canceled. While most of kids are eager to catch up with friends, the general feeling is that
    "playtime is over."
Summer vacation does offer most children a bit of free playtime — the sort that leads to physical
activity and self-organized play, often in short supply during the school year. Still, it's not enough.
Playtime shouldn't be limited to summer vacation: it's important all year.
For most American children in the past, "going out to play" was the norm. Today, according to a
University of Michigan study, children spend 50 percent less time outside than they did just 20 years
ago. There is a direct line between lack of play and some frightening public health and social trends:
tragic statistics for obesity(肥胖), 4.5 million children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder(ADD)
(儿童多动症), an increase in childhood depression and classroom behavioral problems, and an
inability to interact well with peers.
Just an hour a day of active play-running, chasing, games like dodge ball—can provide intense skill
learning. Physical activity is known to lessen the symptoms of mild attention deficit disorder, and
reduces the risk of childhood obesity. Active kids can perform better academically in the long term.
We should be aware of how important play is to one's development. Even a play-deprived social
    mammal
(哺乳动物) like a rat or monkey will become unable to tell friend from enemy, and poor at
handling stress when it enters adulthood. My studies of young murderers revealed that most had lacked
normal, developmentally appropriate play as children and pre-adolescents.
Play is fun, but ultimately it is also useful. The smarter the animal, the more they play. For humans,
play refreshes us because it gets us in touch with our core selves and the joy of life.
I feel sad about the kids who have given up on play for another nine months. Their devaluation of
play is a tragic loss for them and for our society.
    1. Children lacking playtime may have the following problems EXCEPT__________.
    A. to become fat
    B. to suffer from depression
    C. to fail to get along well with others
    D. to murder their peers
    2. Active play is beneficial to children because __________.
    A. it inspires children to catch up with their friends
    B. it is the best way to cure children with obesity
    C. it helps children to improve academic achievement
    D. it can teach children to tell friend from enemy
    3. "A play-deprived social mammal" refers to an animal that__________.
    A. has lost chance to play
    B. requires enough playtime
    C. enjoys playing very much
    D. knows the importance of play
    4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
    A. The article was written before the summer vacation.
    B. American children lack playtime during the school year.
    C. Schools give children more playtime in the new semester.
    D. Children with ADD should play less than normal children.
    5. Which of the following will be the best title?
    A. Summer Vacation is over
    B. What Playtime Brings to Children
    C. Lack of Play Leads to Problems
    D. Let the Children Play
  •      Brian knew he had been drinking more and more, but he was convinced that he'd return to more
moderate drinking when he wasn't so pressured at work, and that "a few too many drinks now and then"
    wasn't a major problem."
My wife and father were on me to stop drinking, but you know how critical and protective family can
be," said Brian. "So I blew them off."
It wasn't until his friend Jack spoke up that Brian started to think differently. "That really hit home,
because I wouldn't expect a friend to confront me with something that personal unless it was very
    important," said Brian. "
Jack said he was really concerned about me. He pointed out that my personality changed after I had
    a few beers--that I became belligerent(寻衅的). For a normally easy-going guy, that was a dramatic
change in behavior." Jack could see that Brian's numerous drinking binges(放纵) were causing problems. Brian was frequently calling into work sick and falling behind in his work, and his marriage was seriously
on the ropes. Brian was teetering on the edge of disaster. "I didn't want to see a good life and a good
friendship ruined," said Jack, "so I approached Brian, shared my honest observations with him, and
    suggested that he seek help."
After a couple days of soul searching, though still reluctant, Brian took Jack's suggestion and was
assessed by an addiction professional. The expert recommended that Brian check into a treatment center, and one day later Brian did so.
Many people fear taking the path that Jack took. Speaking up to a friend who may have a problem
with alcohol or other drugs can be a tricky undertaking.
Yet it's true that a concerned friend can do a lot. Most people don't recognize they have a substance
abuse problem and most don't seek help for a problem until someone close to them intervenes(干预).
    1. What happened to Brian according to the passage?
    A. He suffered from an illness called alcohol addiction.
    B. He changed so much that he was deserted by his family.
    C. He became morally corrupted drinking too much all day.
    D. He drank a little more than normal to escape the pressure.

    2. What does "that" in the 3rd paragraph refer to?

    A. Brian's drinking binges.
    B. Jack's talk with Brian.
    C. Wife and father's intervention.
    D. Brian's different thoughts.
    3.  Brian could accept Jack's suggestions mainly because ____________.
    A. he found his friend was very critical and protective
    B. Jack’s suggestions were professional and persuasive
    C. Jack and Brian's family had different opinions
    D. he knew his friend wouldn't easily intervene his personal affair
    4.  Brian's alcohol abuse brought him many problems EXCEPT ____________.
    A. his refusal to listen to his family
    B. his bad temper and aggressiveness
    C. his failure to do his work well
    D. his marriage problems
    5. The writer narrates Brian's story in order to ____________.
    A. tell us the bad results of alcohol addiction
    B. warn us not to fall into the habit of drinking
    C. show friends have real power to intervene
    D. prove a friend in need is a friend indeed
  •      There are countless diet programs and weight loss systems available. The majority are from multi-
million dollar companies. Do you really think these businesses achieved success with a one-time, fix-all
diet plan? No, they count on having most people return on a recurring basis; hence the term "yo-yo
dieting". A lot of diet plans can be very limiting. You are required to follow a certain meal plan, which
may consist of certain foods. Some plans are more exact and restrictive than others. Some diet companies even supply you with the actual meals. This means even more revenue(收入) for these businesses.
A well-balanced diet consists of carbohydrates that are low in sugar (they're sometimes referred to as "good carbs"), proteins, and fats. (Yes, fats are important, too.) Fortunately for you, a well-balanced diet
is all that is needed to safely and effectively lose or maintain weight, depending upon your goals.
By educating yourself and having the willpower and commitment to make the proper food choices,
you'll be well on your way toward achieving your weight-loss goals. After all, in order for a diet to be
really successful, it cannot be just a diet. You must develop and conform to(遵守) a lifestyle that revolves around smart food decisions. This doesn't mean that you can never enjoy certain things that you crave(渴望), at least from time to time. We can all enjoy such things, but moderation is the key. A week's worth of smart choices deserves a meal out at your favorite restaurant. It also gives you something to look forward
to and enjoy when you are saying "no" to those office donuts all week long.
Don't get me wrong. It isn't always going to be easy. But rarely does anything worth having come
easily. Liking what you see in the mirror, and being fit and healthy are definitely worth working hard for.
Anyone can achieve such goals. To break out the old Nike phrase —Just Do It.
    1. The first paragraph mainly tells us ____________.
    A. there're many kinds of diet plans or programs with different effects
    B. why so many diet plans can not help people to control weight
    C. the diet plans do not work and can only benefit the companies
    D. people can't stick to the diet plans because they are dull
    2. If you want to control weight safely and effectively, what you do NOT need is ____________.
    A. the diet plans from the big company
    B. a well-balanced diet
    C. the willpower and determination
    D. a lifestyle considering smart food choices
    3. What's the correct understanding of the underlined sentence?
    A. Once you have a big meal in the restaurant, your week's effort will be in vain.
    B. If you can make smart food choices for a week, you can treat yourself to a favourite meal out.
    C. A week's smart food choices itself, not a meal out, is a big reward for you.
    D. A week's proper food at home is as attractive as a delicious meal outside.
    4. What's the correct attitude towards the food you like?
    A. Have some whenever you like.
    B. Eat much after a diet of a long time.
    C. Enjoy it once in a while but never too much.
    D. Never have it before you successfully lose weight.
    5.  The last paragraph is meant to ____________.
    A. conclude what's the best way to control weight
    B. emphasize the reasons why people should diet
    C. predict the results of taking well-balanced food
    D. encourage people to take action in spite of difficulties
  •      Last weekend, a girlfriend that I've known since college was visiting. As we left the airport, we had to
stop at the grocery for a case of diet soda. On our way to lunch she asked me "Do you think that drinking diet soda makes you fat?"
"Depends on whom you ask," I said. Last year, researchers from the University of Texas Health
Science Center in San Antonio reported that adults who drink diet soda did not lose weight. They were
actually more likely to become overweight than those adults who did not drink soda at all or those that
drink regular soda. In fact, the more diet soda consumed, the more likely someone would become
overweight. To be specific, there was a 41% increase in the risk of being overweight for every can or
bottle of diet soda consumed daily.
In this study, researcher Sharon Fowler followed over 600 normal weight adults ages 25-64 over a
seven to eight year period of time. She has a number of theories as to why weight gain may be a result of
    drinking a zero-calorie beverage:
1.Artificial sweeteners may affect your body’s ability to judge how many calories you consume. When no calories are consumed, the body may continue to crave(渴望) what it expected and could lead to
    overeating.
         2.  Some people give up regular sodas to justify their favorite dessert and still take in too many calories. A regular soda contains about 150 calories while your dessert may be double that in calories easily.
         3. For others who were gaining weight already, switching to diet soda wasn’t enough to stop the gain.
Since her first piece of research, Fowler has tracked another 2000 people with similar results. Do the
faux sweet products induce people to want more sweets? Fowler suggests that perhaps it’s not the soft
drinks themselves that cause weight gain but that there is some link between diet soda drinking and
    overweight.
    1. Why do people give up regular soda and take diet one according to Fowler's research?
    A. Some want to gain weight.
    B. Some want excuses to have dessert.
    C. Some mistake diet soda as no-calorie drink.
    D. Diet soda can help people lose weight.
    2. Which of the following statements is the result of Fowler's research?
    A. Diet soda can directly cause people to gain weight.
    B. Diet soda increases the risk of becoming overweight.
    C. Diet soda actually contains more calories than regular soda.
    D. Those who drink diet soda are 41% more likely to become fat.
    3. Which can NOT explain the link between diet soda and overweight?
    A. People overeat to satisfy the body’s needs for calories that diet soda lacks.
    B. People also have foods containing more calories when they choose diet soda.
C.Diet soda has little effect on those who have become overweight already.
D.Diet soda is a sweetener that increases the body’s needs for calories.
    4. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Only overweight adults are involved to see if diet soda can help lose weight.
    B. The research lasted many years and over 2000 people took part in it.
    C. Diet soda has opposite effect on those who take it to lose weight.
    D. Sharon Fowler is the first to find drinking diet soda leads to overweight.
    5. What does the underlined word "induce" probably mean?
    A. cause
    B. reduce
    C. advise
    D. inspire
