According to decades-long research, women who took low to moderate (节制) daily doses of aspirin had a reduced death rate ,especially from heart disease. The research, based on data from a major trial that has tracked almost 80,000 women since 1976, found that women who reported using aspirin on a regular basis had a 25 percent lower risk of death from any cause than women who didn't take the drug. The risk of death from cardiovascular (心血管的) disease was 38 percent lower for aspirin users, and there was also a 12 percent reduction in cancer deaths that took effect after a decade of aspirin use, the researchers found in their report based on the Nurses' Health Study. However,an accompanying editorial in the journal cautioned that the results were open to debate and far from definitive. The dissenting (持异议的) editorial was based on results of an earlier trial by the Women's Health Study, which followed almost 40,000 women for 11 years and found no reduction in overall deaths. Therefore, the new findings" cannot overcome the accumulated evidence that aspirin is not particularly effective for the primary prevention of death from cardiovascular disease in women. " " This is a complicated issue , " said Dr. Andrew T. Chan, leading author of the new report. "We understand that aspirin has potential health benefits, but who would aspirin therapy(疗法) be appropriate for? There are areas of disagreements that need further study before that question can be answered" , Chan said. But there is information from the two large studies and other trials that can help guide women and their physicians,he said. And anyone who is thinking about daily aspirin should really talk with doctors about the benefits and risks. |
1. The new report clearly benefits the women suffering _____. |
A. heart disease B. cancer C. lose of memory D. aspirin side effects |
2. Which of the following questions hasn't been solved according to Dr. Chan? |

3. Which research does the author seem to support? |
A. The new one. B. The earlier one. C. Neither. D. Both. |
4.We know from the last paragraph that women who trust the treatment should ____. |
A. be very careful about it B. start immediately with the help of their physicians C. concentrate on the benefits instead of the risks D. turn to their physicians for only the benefit it has |
5. What is the main purpose of the passage? |
A. To promote the new aspirin therapy to women. B. To introduce two controversial researches. C. To draw a final conclusion on the debate. D. To help women live longer and healthier. |

The most popular way to welcome the new year in the United States is to have a big party. Some parties are at people's homes. But in recent years,it has become more and more common for Americans to go to a hotel or a club or a restaurant on the night of December the 31st. There, they can have dinner, drink and dance. Most New Year's parties have something in common. First of all, they are usually noisy. People sing and bands play. And often, guests pull a cracker when the clock strikes twelve at midnight. People think that loud sounds would drive away the evil spirits of the old year before the new year begins. For many people New Year Eve is the night when they can drink as much as they like. Some New Year's celebrations have ended sadly for people who got drunk and had driving accidents. Radio and television announcements warn people of the danger of drunk driving. Some places offer free rides home for drunken people. The biggest and noisiest New Year party in the United States takes place at Times Square in New York City. Thousands of people gather there. Some of them ring bells or let off crackers. Others blow whistles or car horns. And at 12 o'clock, they begin to cheer as an electric sign in the shape of a red apple lights up on top of a tall building. The Americans keep up important traditions as the new year begins. They make decisions about how to improve themselves in the year ahead. Experts say that the most common New Year decision in the United States is to eat less. But many Americans also promise themselves to stop smoking,or stop drinking wine,or to be nicer to their friends and families. Experts find fewer than ten percent of Americans carry out their New Year decisions. Few want to give up this tradition. Almost everyone seems to enjoy looking back over the year that has just ended and looking forward to a nice beginning of a new year. |

Free and secure accommodation, no bills and even the odd home-cooked meals. It sounds like the perfect living arrangement for cash-strapped students. Two mothers believe they have devised a way for struggling students to save on accommodation costs when they leave home to study at university. Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude have launched Student Swaps,an online accommodation forum (论坛) for parents and students,in advance of the introduction in September of ~3,000 higher education top-up fees. Their website says,"The principle behind Student Swaps is to enable students to literally swap(交换) family homes. "The website will hold a database of students who would like to swap and link them with suitable matches. So those from one town/city could swap with those from a different town/city. The site describes itself as offering a" cost-free accommodation alternative...at a time of growing student debt". There is no charge for the service at the moment, but Ms Barnham and Ms Flude intend to introduce a ~10 annual fee if it becomes established. However, the National Union of Students ( NUS) has warned that, while the scheme may sound appealing to struggling freshers,it lacks any formal regulation. Veronica King,NUS vice-president of welfare, said, " The fact that this scheme has even been suggested is evidence to the high levels of debt students now face on graduation. " Recent research has shown that students are more likely to live at home in coming years,in a bid to cut down on the cost of a degree. "This is worrying,as it may mean that students choose their university on the basis of where it is,rather than because it offers the best course for them. It also means students will miss out on what is for some-a key part of the student experience-living away from home. " |
1. A" cash-strapped" student means one who _____. |
A. lacks money B. prefers to stay at home C. is careful with money D. wants to change cash |
2. What is Kate Bamham and Amanda Flude's purpose of launching Student Swaps? |
A. To provide cheaper accommodation for students. B. To let students stay close to their universities. C. To help students spend less on accommodation costs. D. To let students exchange ideas freely online. |
3. What can students do on Student Swaps? |
A. They can find students to exchange homes with. B. They can make friends with students from a different city. C. They can borrow money to pay for their higher education. D. They can voice their opinions against the rising cost of a degree. |
4. Now many students would prefer a university |
A. which can give them free accommodation B. which is not far away from their homes C. which offers the best courses D. which can offer home-cooked meals |
5. What would be the best title for the passage? |
A. High Cost Troubles University Students in UK. B. Students Swaps is Welcomed by Students in UK. C. Two Mothers' Good Intention to Help Students in UK. D. Website Helps Students Live at Someone Else's Home. |

On a grassy plain in South Africa, thousands of miles from home, two pairs of zoo-bred South China tiger cubs-one-year-old Hope and Cathay and six-month-old Tiger Woods and Madonna are learning to hunt in the wild. The hope is that they will one day pass on their skills to their young, allowing the next generation to get back to wildlife reserves (保护区) in China. A survey shows that the tigers are in more danger of dying out than China's most famous animal, the giant panda. Forty years ago, about 4,000 South China tigers lived in the wild. Today there are only about 30. An additional 64 live in 19 zoos in China, which are all descendants(后代) of six wild animals seized in 1956. The cubs were born in zoos in China and removed from their mothers when they were three months old. Their first home in South Africa was a one-acre camp where they stayed for a month. Their next home was a ten-acre area, where they lived for three months to help them gradually get used to life outside a cage. When the cubs first arrived in South Africa, they didn't even want to leave their cages. It took weeks to get them to eat chicken, used as they were to being fed beef at the zoo in China where they were born. It took months of practice to hunt a live animal and then make the link between the kill and food. Now just a few months on, and living in a 150-acre camp, they have become remarkably skilled hunters. All four animals will finally return to zoos in China while the pioneering pairs' cubs will grow up completely wild. The aim is for the first rehabilitated tigers to go to reserves developed in China by 2008 ,when the Olympic Games will be held in Beijing. |

For many years it was common in the United States to associate Chinese Americans with restaurants and places that wash clothes. People did not realize that the Chinese had been driven into these occupations by the prejudice and discrimination that faced them in this country. The first Chinese to reach the United States came during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Like most of the other people there, they had come to search for gold. In that largely unoccupied land, the men staked a claim (立界标表明所有权 ) for themselves by placing markers in the ground. However, either because the Chinese were so different from the others or because they worked so patiently that they sometimes succeeded in getting a mining claim to make a profit( where others saw no way to do so) , they became the target of their competitors. They were troubled and attacked in many ways. Often they were prevented from working their claims; some places even passed regulations forbidding them to own claims. The Chinese therefore started to seek out other ways of earning a living. Some of them began to wash clothes for the white miners; others set up small restaurants. ( There were almost no women in California in those days and the Chinese filled a real need by doing this " women's work". ) Some went to work as farmhands or as fishermen. In the early 1860's many more Chinese arrived in California. This time railroad companies brought the men in to construct the first railroad line from Califomia to the East. They were sorely needed because the work was so hard and dangerous, and it was carried on in such an isolated part of the country that the railroad company could not find other laborers for the job. As in the case of the first Chinese in America, these Chinese were almost all males; and like them, too, they encountered a great deal of prejudice. The hostility grew especially strong after the railroad project was completed, and the Chinese laborers returned to California-thousands of them, all out of work. Many of today's Chinese Americans are the descendants (后裔) of some of the early miners and railroad workers. |

2. Why did the Chinese become the target of their competitors? |
A. Because the Chinese were different and they worked patiently to achieve a lot of success while others couldn't. B. The Chinese were so different from the others. C. They worked so patiently with little payment. D. There were almost no women in California in those days. |
3. What was the fate of the Chinese after the construction of the railroad ? |
A. They went back to their own country. B. They stayed to work in the railroad companies. C. They went to California to search for gold. D. The hostility grew especially strong. |
