56yearold becomes 1st woman to swim Atlantic (AP)-Jennifer Figge pressed her toes into the Caribbean sand, excited and exhausted as she touched land this week for the first time in almost a month.Reaching a beach in Trinidad, she became the first woman on record to swim across the Atlantic Oceana dream she'd had since the early 1960s, when a stormy transAtlantic (飞越大西洋) flight got her thinking she could wear a life vest and swim the rest of the way if needed. The 56yearold left the Cape Verde Islands off Africa's western coast on Jan.12,2009,swimming 19 out of 25 days battling waves of up to 30 feet. The distance from Cape Verde to Trinidad is about 700 miles.Crewmembers are still computing exactly how many miles she swam. The original plan was for her to swim to the Bahamasa distance of about 2,100 milesbut inclement (恶劣的) weather forced her to change her plans and she arrived at Trinidad on Feb.5.She now plans to swim from Trinidad to the British Virgin Islands, ending her voyage at the Bitter End Yacht Club in late February. Her journey comes a decade after French swimmer Benoit Lecomte made the first known solo transAtlantic swim, covering nearly 4,000 miles from Massachusetts to France in 73 days.No woman on record has made the crossing. Figge wore a red cap and wet suit, with her only goodluck charm (护身符) underneath:an old,red shirt to guard against chafing (磨痛),signed by friends, relatives and her father, who recently died. The other cherished (珍惜) possession she kept onboard was a picture of Gertrude Ederle,an American who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel."We have a few things in common, "Figge said."She worea red hat and she was of German descent (血统).We both talked to the sea, and neither one of us wantedto get out." |

Martin Frobisher, born in Yorkshire, went to London as a boy to be educated by a relative. He showed no talent for book learning,so his relative sent him to sea. Before reaching manhood, Frobisher had been on two voyages to the Guinea Coast. On the second he was captured and handed over to the Portuguese garrisoning (驻守) Sao Jorge da Mina (now Elmina,Ghana),who allowed him to return to England. By the 1570s,England had largely abandoned hope of finding a Northeast Passage to Asia, and thoughts turned to the Northwest.Frobisher worked together with Michael Lok,a man of some wealth and learning.Frobisher's first voyage,in 1576,took him to Frobisher Bay in Baffin Island. English investors (投资者),including Queen Elizabeth, poured money into Lok's Company of Cathay.Frobisher sailed again in 1577,this time to ship home what he mistakenly thought was goldbearing minerals.Lok still felt hopeful and sent Frobisher back in 1578.This time the mariner discovered the Hudson Strait. He followed the strait for nearly 200 miles, believing it to be a more promising Northwest Passage than Frobisher Bay.He brought home more dirt and rocks, but English confidence had gone;Lok went to a debtors' prison and Frobisher sought other employment. Frobisher accompanied Sir Francis Drake to the West Indies in 1585~1586.When Philip Ⅱ's Spanish Armada (无敌舰队) entered the English Channel in 1588,Frobisher's part in the fighting was successful and he received knighthood (爵士爵位).He died of a wound received near Brest, where he had been sent to relieve the siege (解除包围).He lived just long enough to be taken back to Plymouth. |

What would you think if I told you I could eat 40 percent more food than other peopleeating boxes of ice cream, bowls of noodles and plates of meatall while losing weight? You might hate me,thinking I have one of those annoyingly good metabolisms (新陈代谢) that just burn up fat the instant it enters my body. You might wonder if I have an intestinal (肠的) worm,or perhaps an eating disorder.Or maybe you'd just shrug your shoulders and figure I have a rich fantasy life. You'd be wrong. For my body to finish such a surprising task,I would have to be a mouse. Not just any mouse, but one lucky enough to be involved in a new study at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. After identifying an enzyme (酶) that allows fat to be stored in the body, scientists fed mice without those enzymes, and found those mice were able to consume far more food than other miceand still weigh 10 to 15percent less. Best of all,the mice that had no enzymes were in very good health, producing baby mice with no problem and generally acting like any other mouse. That's great news for obesity researchers, who think that scientists may figure out a way to prevent the fatmetabolizing (脂肪代谢) enzyme in humans and control weight gain. And such a pill would be very exciting for many struggling to get rid of dangerous extra pounds. But don't start planning any big dinner just yet:At this point,of course, any pill for humans is but a twinkle (闪烁) in the eye of every medicine company's CEO.More tests are to be made, and eventually humans will be introduced in the test. But for now, unfortunately, control in diet is still key. |
1.What does "such a surprising task" in Paragraph 3 refer to? |
A.Eating a lot of food while losing weight. B.Burning fat very quickly. C.Controlling the diet. D.Having a rich fantasy life. |
2.Why did the author say he/she had to be a mouse in Paragraph 4? |
A.Because a mouse can lose weight no matter how much it eats. B.Because the weightlosing tests were made on the mouse. C.Because the mouse has a very good metabolism. D.Because the author wants to try the food without the enzyme. |
3.What does the author want to show through the last two paragraphs? |
A.You can be free of guilt when having big dinners. B.Scientists cannot find the key to identifying the enzyme. C .Don't overeat before the test is made on humans. D.It is unnecessary to control weight at present. |

Like dogs, birds breathe in air and get oxygen to supply body tissues, while fish breathing depends on getting oxygen from water through parts of its body. However, birds' respiration (呼吸) is different from that of dogs and is much more efficient than that of other animals. The lungs take up just 2 percent of a bird's body volume, yet the bird quickly takesin large amounts of oxygen and quickly removes waste and excess heat. There are actually two respiration systems, internal and external. The external respiration system uses the lungs and a series of air sacs (袋囊) distributed throughout the body so that the oxygen supply is in direct communication with body parts.Oxygen is taken in and exchanged for carbon dioxide in the blood, then the carbon dioxide is moved out. So far, much like dogs. However,in an important difference, the air flow in a bird is one way, through a series of tubes and cells, rather than two ways,in and out of the lungs,as it is in dogs.A constant stream of air goes through lungs and then is channeled through the complex system of air sacs, which also help remove excess heat,as wellas through hollow bones. The gases are then channeled forward through the lungs again, then through more air sacs, finally ending up in the windpipe, and are expelled from the body. The air sac system is bigger than the lungs and takes up 15 percent of the chest and belly area. Meanwhile, the birds' great oxygen needs are also handled by the internal breathing system. The oxygen, stored primarily in body fat tissue,is burned through the process of cell respiration. This process produces both muscular energy and heat. |
