Napoleon, as a character in Tolstoy's War and Peace, is more than once described as having
"fat little hands". Nor does he "sit well or firmly on the horse". He is said to be "undersized", with
"short legs" and a "round stomach". The issue here is not the accuracy of Tolstoy's description-it
seems not that far off from historical accounts but his choice of facts: other things that could be
said of the man are not said. We are meant to understand the difference of a warring commander
in the body of a fat little Frenchman. Tolstoy's Napoleon could be any man wandering in the streets
and putting a little of powdered tobacco up his nose-and that is the point.
It is a way the novelist uses to show the moral nature of a character. And it turns out that,as
Tolstoy has it,Napoleon is a crazy man. In a scene in Book Three of War and Peace, the wars having
reached the critical year of 1812,Napoleon receives a representative from the Tsar (沙皇) ,who has
come with peace terms. Napoleon is very angry:doesn't he have more army? He,not the Tsar,is the
one to make the terms. He will destroy all of Europe if his army is stopped. "That is what you will have
gained by engaging me in the war!" he shouts. And then, Tolstoy writes,Napoleon "walked silently
several times up and down the room, his fat shoulders moving quickly".
Still later, after reviewing his army amid cheering crowds,Napoleon invites the shaken Russian
to dinner."He raised his hand to the Russian's... face," Tolstoy writes, and "taking him by the ear pulled
it gently. . . ". To have one'-s ear pulled by the Emperor was considered thegreatest honor and mark
of favor at the French court."Well, well, why don't you say anything?" said he,as if it was ridiculous in his
presence to respect any one but himself, Napoleon.
Tolstoy did his research, but the composition is his own.
    1. Tolstoy's description of Napoleon in War and Peace is__________.
    A. far from the historical facts
    B. based on the Russian history
    C. based on his selection of facts
    D. not related to historical details
    2. Napoleon was angry when receiving the Russian representative because__________.
    A. he thought he should be the one to make the peace terms
    B. the Tsar's peace terms were hard to accept
    C. the Russians stopped his military movement
    D. he didn't have any more army to fight with
    3. What did Napoleon expect the Russian representative to do?
    A. To walk out of the room in anger.
    B. To show agreement with him
    C. To say something about the Tsar.
    D. To express his admiration.
    4. Tolstoy intended to present Napoleon as a man who is__________.
    A. ill-mannered in dealing with foreign guests
    B. fond of showing off his iron will
    C. determined in destroying all of Europe
    D. crazy for power and respect
    5. What does the last sentence of the passage imply?
    A. A writer doesn't have to be faithful to his findings.
    B. A writer may write about a hero in his own way.
    C. A writer may not be responsible for what he writes.
    D. A writer has hardly any freedom to show his feelings.

Sorry to say, our brains naturally start slowing down at the Cruelty young age of 30. It used
to be thought that this couldn't be helped, but new studies show that people of any age can train
their brains to work faster. "Your brain is a learning machine," says University of California scientist
Dr. Michael Merzenich. Given the right tools, we can train our brains to act like they did when we
were younger. All that's required is the practice designed just for the purpose: a few exercises for
    the mind.
Merzenich has developed a computer-based training method to speed up the process(过程)in
which the brain deals with information  ( positscience. com). Since much of the data we receive
comes through speech, the Brain Fitness Program works with language and hearing to better
    speed and accuracy (准确性).
Over the course of training, the program starts asking you to distinguish (辨别) sounds (between
"dog" and "bog", for example) at an increasingly faster speed. It's a bit like tennis instructor, says
Merzenich, hitting balls at you-faster and faster to keep you challenged(受到挑战).
You may start out slow, but before long you're pretty quick,
The biggest finding in brain research in the last ten years is that the brain at any age is highly plastic.
If you ask your brain to learn, it will learn. And it may even speed up while in the process.
To keep your brain young and plastic you can do one of a million new activities that challenge and
excite you: playing table tennis or bridge, doing crossword puzzles, learning a language. . . "When
it comes to preventing ageing, you really do ' use it or lose it' ,"says Barbara Sahakian, professor at
    Cambridge University.
    1. Dr. Merzenich's training method mainly depends on_________.
    A. speech training
    B. computer languages
    C. the activities one joins in
    D. the information being dealt with
    2. By saying"the brain at any age is highly plastic", the writer probably means the brain can be_____.
    A. used
    B. mastered
    C. developed
    D. researched
    3. What can we learn from the text?
    A. Practice makes a quick mind.
    B. Brain research started ten years ago.
    C. Dr. Merzenich is a scientist in computer.
    D. People believed nothing could stop the brain slowing down.
    4. Which of the following agrees with the writer's idea?

    A. The training methods work better for the old.
    B. People should use the brain to stop it from ageing.
    C. The training of the brain should start at an early age.
    D. It's necessary to take part in as many activities as possible.

As her best friend continued to talk about her topic ideas, Sarah's mind drifted. She thought
about how Mindy was moving 500 miles away in less than a month. She thought about how much

ended quickly after that and Sarah was feeling better. She was still sad that her best friend was moving,

In October on the east coast of Australia migrating(迁徙) humpback whales (座头鲸) pass
very close  to  the shore. With the help of Max Egan, we went to film them near Byron Bay. It
was extremely exciting to spot the little puffs(水柱)of spray on the horizon. When migrating, the
whales can be traveling at speeds of about 12 km an hour and can dive under anywhere between
five and forty minutes, but with many years of experience Max usually guided our boat to exactly
the right place to provide us with amazing sighting. As the whales break the surface like submarines
(潜水艇 ) , the water spills off their broad dark backs and huge tails. Then, with a powerful down
stroke ,they dive back into the depths of the sea, leaving just a smooth glassy patch of water or
"footprint" on the surface to show where they had been.
One day we had traveled up and down the shore and far out to the sea in search of whales, but
the horizon was deserted. There was no report of whales in the area so we
decided to test out Max's new, highly sensitive hydrophone (水中听音器) and the result was
astonishing. As soon as the hydrophone was in the water, we found ourselves listening to the most
beautiful voices. What may have seemed like a vast empty ocean filled with the singing of whales.
It is the males which sing,as they migrate between feeding and breeding (养育) grounds. No one
knows for sure what the purpose of these songs is,whether they are love songs to the females or
warnings to other males to stay away.
It was thought that each population of hump backs had its own song which remained regular but
recent findings suggest that the whales appreciate a memorable tune (曲调)and quickly adopt any
    new songs they hear.
    1. Which finding about the whale is beyond the writer's expectation?
    A. The little puffs.
    B. The songs of whales.
    C. The traveling speed of the whale.
    D. The depth of the whales' dive.
    2. What do we know about Max?
    A. He likes whales very much.
    B. He is a brave scientist on whales.
    C. He is an experienced man in finding whales.
    D. He is an expert in making hydrophones.

    3. The author's main purpose of looking for whales in the passage is___________.

    A. carrying out research on whales
    B. studying the beautiful songs of whales
    C. making films about whales
    D. hunting whales for research
    4. What's the wrong opinion about whales before according to the passage?

    A. Each group of humpbacks had the song of their own
    B. Whales can't sing to each other.
    C. Whales aren't easy to find.
    D. The whale can't dive in the sea as long as forty minutes.
