It is well known that the Japanese people's love of fish is almost as strong as a bee's interest in honey. As fish populations were decreasing, fishing companies were forced to fish further and further away from the shore. Then they had a big challenge - how to keep the fish fresh for longer. So they decided to keep the fish stored in freezers on the boats. But the public did not like frozen fish. So again the fishing companies had a new bigger challenge. What they decided to do was to have fish tanks on their boats. After catching fishes, they would put them in the tanks and keep them living there until they got back to shore. But in this protected environment, lacking predators (掠食者), the fish stopped moving around. The Japanese public felt these dull fish did not taste fresh, which had an unpleasant effect upon sales. Once again the fishing companies had an even bigger challenge … Stop for a minute! Before we go any further, I would like to ask "What are your challenges? How do you handle an unexpected challenge? " May I think it this way that you should try to attack your challenges? Conquer them with a Swiss Army knife. Take the most proper and simple tool that you can adopt to deal with your situation. Now back to our story. How did the Japanese finally figure out the fresh fish problem? Sharks! You might think the same. Sharks were caught and put into the tanks with other fishes. Don't sharks eat fish? Well, they do eat a few fish, but they did also keep more fish active and alert (警觉的). The fish stay fresh because they are challenged. Now, try to keep yourself fresh by finding your own shark to offer yourself a challenge in your own business and career. |

A.If you went fishing, you might do as the fishing companies did B.Try to find a big shark, and you will meet your challenge C.To succeed in life, you should always be ready to meet challenges D.Sharks are usually compared to the challenges in people's life |
4.The purpose for the author to write the passage is to ________. |

High-quality customer service is preached(宣扬) by many, but actually keeping customers happy is easier said than done. Shoppers seldom complain to the manager or owner of retail store, but instead will alert their friends, relatives, co-workers, strangers and anyone who will listen. Store managers are often the last to hear complaints, and often find out only when their regular customers decide to frequent their competitors, according to a study jointly conducted by Verde group and Wharton school. "Storytelling hurts retailers and entertains consumers." Said Paula Courtney, president of the Verde group. "The store loses the customer, but the shopper must also find a replacement." On average, every unhappy customer will complain to at least four other, and will no longer visit the specific store for every dissatisfied customer, a store will lose up to three more due to negative reviews. The resulting "snowball effect" can be disastrous to retailers. According to the research, shoppers who purchased clothing encountered the most problems. Ranked second and third were grocery and electronics customers. The most common complaints include filled parking lots, cluttered(塞满了的) shelves, overloaded racks, out-of-stock items, long check-out lines, and rude salespeople. During peak shopping hours, some retailers solved the parking problems by getting moonlighting local police to work as parking attendants. Some hired flag wavers to direct customers to empty peaking spaces. This guidance got rid of the need for customers to circle the parking lot endlessly, and avoided confrontation between those eyeing the same parking space. Retailers can relieve the headaches by redesigning store layouts, pre-stocking sales items, hiring speedy and experienced cashiers, and having sales representatives on hand to answer questions. Most importantly, salespeople should be diplomatic and polite with angry customers. "Retailers who're responsive and friendly are more likely to smooth over issues than those who aren't so friendly." Said professor Stephen Hoch. "Maybe something as simple as a greeter at the store entrance would help." Customers can also improve future shopping experiences by filing complaints to the retailer, instead of complaining to the rest of the world. Retailers are hard-pressed to improve when they have no idea what is wrong. |
1. Why are store managers often the last to hear complaints? |
A. Few customers believe the service will be improved. B. Customers would rather relate their unhappy experiences to people around them. C. Customers have no easy access to store managers. D. Most customers won't bother to complain even if they have had unhappy experiences. |
2. Shop owners often hire moonlighting police as parking attendants so that hoppers . |
A. can find their cars easily after shopping B. won't have trouble parking their cars C. can stay longer browsing in the store D. won't have any worries about security |
3.What contributes most to smoothing over issues with customers? |
A. Design of the store layout. B. Hiring of efficient employees. C. Manners of the salespeople. D. Huge supply of goods for sale. |
4.To achieve better shopping experiences, customers are advised to . |
A. voice their dissatisfaction to store managers directly B. shop around and make comparisons between stores C. settle their disputes with stores in a diplomatic way D. put pressure on stores to improve their service |

Young women are more adventurous than young men when traveling abroad in gap years. One in three female backpackers visits more than three countries during a year out and travels alone, according to new research. By contrast, the majority of their male counterparts(对手方) visit only one country and tend to travel in groups, says a survey by the Gap Year company, which provides information and services for students considering taking a year out. More women than men say that their prime reason for taking time off is to see the world and experience different cultures.Men were more likely to rank "having fun" higher on their list of priorities.Women were more likely to value the challenge of a foreign trip, and many cited reasons such as learning a language and meeting new people. The more adventurous gap years taken by women seem to work to their benefit; more than three quarters of those surveyed reported increased confidence, self-reliance and independence, whereas only half of the men had that experience. The research also showed that women were more likely to do voluntary work while travelling, with more than one in ten helping with teaching or development projects. One of the reasons given for this is a wish to see the country in an authentic(真正的) light. A greater proportion(比率) of women than men faced objections or criticism from their families over their gapyear plans.Among the men surveyed, lack of money was the main barrier to travel. Carolyn Martin, a doctor from London, was a typically confident female traveller.Starting in Cape Town, she travelled around southern Africa and Australia with a string of unusual and sometimes dangerous jobs. "I had one job chasing elephants off the runway in Africa by banging a stick against a pan," she re called."It was OK but one day I did get chased by one." She said that she had travelled alone because "you meet more people". |

The statement, "you can do anything you put your mind to," leads us to believe that all you must do is imagine what you'd like to accomplish, set your mind to the task, and wait for success. To a certain degree this is true.Focused intention combined with action is a powerful force. But the statement is misleading because it fails to mention the difficulty and necessity of focusing your mind on a special goal. Most of us don't know what we want.We think we do, but we really don't.we only know what we don't want. We don't want a boring job.We don't want to be poor.We don't want to disappoint our loved ones. Knowing specially what you want is much different from knowing what you don't want. When you only know what you don't, your intentions aren't focused.Consider this example. Pete doesn't want to be poor. He's sick of earning less than his friends, and he's determined to raise his position. To accomplish this goal, Pete could take many different paths. He could train for a high paying profession. He could start his own company, go into real estate, or do many other things that would lead to acquiring wealth. But Pete isn't sure what he wants to do.He doesn't know which path best fits his skills and personality, so he doesn't make a decision to follow any particular path. Hoping to answer this question, he investigates a dozen possibilities, but as soon as he runs into adversity, he decides that path isn't for him and moves on to a new solution. Pete's actions aren't focused.Although he works very hard, his efforts don't build on each other rather than building one giant inaccessible sand castle, Pete has built twenty small ones that are easy to collapse. He ends up confused and discouraged. What's worse, Pete's lack of focus leads to failure. What if Pete had chosen a specific path? A set of specific goals is much easier to achieve than an unclear goal like becoming wealthy.Being focused on a path gives Pete a logical set of actions to follow. Each accomplishment is one step closer to thefinal goal. I think we can all agree that committing to a clearly defined path, regardless of which one, gives Pete the best chance of becoming wealthy. But how can he choose a path if he doesn't know what he wants? Maybe money isn't his only goal.Maybe he wants to do something he loves at the same time.Maybe he can't afford to go back to school.Reality is complicated, and Pete doesn't want to commit too soon. And that's why he failed. |
