Sometimes children do not do what their parents tell them to do. When this happens, a parent tries to
help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child.
There are many things that a parent can do. One thing that people have done is to spank (打屁股) the child. When a parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on their
bottom. This is meant to show the child that they have done something wrong.
One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child. His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own children with his hand, he saw that he put a red mark on his child's leg. He never did
    that again.
One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the
other person is doing. Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the
child too hard. Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child
    to do the right thing.
Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that their religion(宗教)tells them that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it. The courts (法院) say that
parents have the right to teach their children how to behave.
Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child. Telling the child exactly what is
wanted from them can be one thing. Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried. Getting down to the child's level and taking a more child-friendly approach (方法) can help as well.
    1. According to the passage, when children do something wrong, one thing that parents usually do to
    punish them is to ________.
    A. strike them on the bottom
    B. try to help them do the right thing
    C. teach them what to do
    D. take them to court
    2. Which of the following is NOT the problem caused by spanking?
    A. It teaches the child to hit others when they offend him or her.
    B. The parent may get angry and hit the child too hard.
    C. Sometimes parents may use spanking for everything.
    D. It makes parents try other ways to make the child do right.
    3. Which of the following can best describe the writer's attitude towards spanking?
    A. favorable (赞同的)
    B. indifferent (不关心)
    C. interested
    D. unfavorable
    4. From this passage, we can conclude that ________.
    A. Good children always do the right thing.
    B. Parents should try their best to avoid spanking their children.
    C. Parents have no choice but to spank their children when they do something wrong.
    D. Children can have more than one choice to avoid being spanked.

Ask a bachelor(单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less
satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they
are not its most distinguishing (显著的) features.
Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night's sleep or a three-day vacation. I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to
have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates (释放) time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely
increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing
to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all
those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
    1. According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because ________ .
    A. he is reluctant to take on family responsibilities
    B. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single
    C. he finds more fun in dating than in marriage
    D. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement
    2. Raising children, in the author's opinion is ________ .
    A. a moral duty
    B. a thankless job
    C. a rewarding task
    D. a source of inevitable pain
    3. From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from (起源于) ________ .
    A. hatred
    B. misunderstanding
    C. prejudice
    D. ignorance
    4. To understand what true happiness is one must ________ .
    A. have as much fun as possible during one's lifetime
    B. make every effort to liberate oneself from pain
    C. put up with pain under all circumstances
    D. be able to distinguish happiness from fun

Knowing the best way to study will help you to be a better student. By using your time properly, you
can do your homework more quickly. Learning to study is not difficult.
The first thing to remember is that you must be willing to learn. It doesn't mean that you must always
like the subject. It does mean, however, that you must be willing to do whatever is necessary to learn. Try
to understand why it is important and how it will help you now and later to do and learn other things.
Knowing mathematics facts will be useful in your whole life.  Knowing how to spell makes any kind of
writing easier. Sometimes subject that you think is going to be uninteresting will be exciting when you begin to work at it and understand it more clearly. Learning things can be fun if you are willing to work with
    them.
Here's some advice for you: have a certain time each day and a quiet place with good lighting for study, so that you can concentrate on your study without interruptions(中断); have everything ready before you
sit down to study, a dictionary, paper, a pen and books; be sure you understand what you should learn
before you start; read carefully and pay special attention to the most important things; when memorizing,
first find out the main parts and then recite the whole thing; check your homework after you finish it; never
forget the importance of review and preview.
    1. The main purpose of the article is______
    A. to prove that learning is not difficult
    B. to make the readers be interested in study
    C. to tell the importance of self teaching
    D. to tell the students how to study well
    2. We learn things because______
    A. our parents want us to learn
    B. every student learns at school
    C. we may use these things in the future

    3. Which of the following is NOT the advice given in the article?
    A. To put a pen, paper and books beside you before study.
    B. To study at any possible time and place.
    C. To review and preview.
    D. To pay attention to the most important things.

"Have you ever heard the old saying, "Never judge a book by its cover"? This is a good rule to follow when you try to judge the cleverness of others by their looks and performance. Some people have minds
that shine only in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in novel writing may find himself
speechless before a pretty girl. But don't make the mistake of thinking he might not be that clever. With a
pen and paper, he can tell what he thought very well.
Other people may fool you into mistakenly thinking they are clever by putting up a good front.
A student who listens carefully and takes notes in class is sure to make a good impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may get scores much lower than his classmates.
We may conclude that: you can't judge someone by appearances. The only way to tell whether a
person is clever or not is to get to know him by observing(观察) how he reacts to different situations. The more situations you observe, the more accurate your judgment is likely to be. So take your time. Don't
judge the book by its cover.
    1. The best title for this passage is ______________.
    A. Judging cleverness
    B. Choosing a book
    C. A speechless young man
    D. Putting up a good front

    A. don't judge a book by its cover
    B. don't judge a person's cleverness by appearance
    C. people may fool you by putting up a good front
    D. make sure you know someone well before observing him
    3. The young man mentioned in the passage_____________.
    A. is stupid
    B. is a good student
    C. is a good writer
    D. is successful with girls
    4. According to the passage, true knowledge of a person's cleverness comes from___________.
    A. the grades he gets in school
    B. his manners at parties
    C. his outward appearance
    D. how he behaves in different situations
    5. The passage suggests that in judging a person's intelligence we should_____________.
    A. make quick judgments
    B. be creative
    C. have patience and be careful
    D. give him a test
