My name is Lanier Lobdell, and I am a 55 - year - old woman with rheumatoid arthritis (风湿性 关节炎), or RA. RA is a disease that mostly affects the joints, but it can also affect internal organs. I have had RA for almost21 years, and it definitely has changed my life, however, I try not to live my life like I have a disease. For me, attitude is everything. I always try to find humor in the situation or try to ignore it, but that does not always work. These days I can hardly walk due to my ankles, yet I still try and do the things I always did. I love riding my motorcycle, and I try to take long trips every year. This year I got involved with some folks who make the biologic medicine I am on, to create the Going the Extra Mile Tour to raise awareness about RA. The tour will take me across the country and back on my motorcycle, making stops along the way to meet with local Arthritis Foundation (AF) chapters and people who are affected by all forms of arthritis including RA. I want to encourage people not to let RA stop them from living their lives the best they can. There are so many new medicines coming out these days, and they can really help. People have to be their own supporters and get informed -- knowledge is power. Talk to your doctor and focus on what you can do--not what you can't. Rest when your body is telling you to and push and keep going when you can. Learn to listen to your body- that's how I deal with having RA. |

Dr. Julie Coulton, a British psychologist, focuses her research on the extraordinary function of the play in the physical and spiritual development of children and Martti Bergson from the University of Helsinki shows that playing outside, in the open air, contributes to a better development of the brain. Thus parents must encourage their children to spend as much time as possible in the open air, and at the same time, to ask schools and kindergartens to assure the small a playground outside. Recent statistics (数据) and studies show an alarming increase of the number of hours spent by children in front of the TV and the computer and a decrease of the time spent outside. As a consequence more and more children suffer from eye problems and have to wear glasses. Also the problem of fatness among children concerns many parents who don't know what to do anymore to make their children eat healthy and balanced. Children need a space where to develop their creativity mid parents should encourage them all the time. Too many rules hold back the child's personality and creativity and prevent them to develop the desire to know, to find out, to learn. If you tell your child so many times: "Don't do that, don't mess the room, don't go there ...", he will lose the desire to do something, anything. Parents must watch their children without suffocating (窒息) them. Should you consider they mustn't do that or this, you have to logically explain them your reasons and they will understand. Through playing a child learns how to communicate, how to take decisions. Playing is connected to the intellectual, emotional and social progress of the child. Playing lets your children learn how to express his feelings. |

Good relationships are definitely good sources of happiness in life. We all want happy relationships but if we do not keep that relationship alive, it can also be one of the most distraught things in life. There may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different preferences and points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some major key players in making relationships work. It is often said that building good relationships is all about communication. Good communication indeed governs a good relationship -- knowing the right thing to say, when to say it, how to say it, and accepting that some things that are better left unsaid. I personally think communication must be broadened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work, from money to entertainment and even in things about yourself or about your friend that you do not know, communication is essential in these aspects of the relationships. Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him all the time. You and your friend come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environments so there may be disagreements here and there. However, it is important in making relationships work to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to compromise (妥协) at times are essential. As the relationship lasts longer, you may also discover things about you and your friend that you may not have known before. Therefore, supporting each other on both your "hidden selves" can also make a good relationship. Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me, I always believe that love needs open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work. |

Commodities (日用品) are basic materials that are used and traded worldwide. The price of commodities helps determine how much a business can charge for a product and the profit it can make. Commodity prices have reached a two-year high since falling sharply during the world financial crisis. Hard commodities are materials like iron ore, oil and gold. Agricultural products are soft commodities. These include wheat, cotton and rice. Economic measures show the world economy is recovering. China and India, for example, have reported strong growth in manufacturing (制造业). Developed nations have had slower growth. John James, a business professor at Pace University, says demand in developing economies can push up prices for commodities like oil and iron ore used for making steel. But, he says, changing currency values can also influence prices. Gold prices have reached record levels in recent months. That means gold dealers must pay more for the commodity now than they did only a year ago. That affects current prices. Not surprisingly, manufacturers want some control over the prices they pay for commodities. Futures (期货) contracts are agreements between a buyer and a seller to exchange something at a set price at some time in the future. These contracts let buyers lock in a price for basic materials. But some traders in futures markets only want to make a profit. They buy or sell contracts depending on the direction they believe prices will go. These speculators (投机者) get condemned when prices rise, or fall, too quickly. The United States, Germany and France are looking into ways to limit this kind of trading. Some experts say exporting commodities is not a good path to long-term economic growth. The United Nations recently reported that the least developed countries must change their economies to provide good incomes for their citizens. A UN official says the least developed countries need to cut dependence on commodities and manufacture products for export. He says only this will let them gain from world trade. |
1. How many of the following are soft commodities? ① gold ②corn ③ cotton ④ iron ⑤ education ⑥ oil ⑦ fruits ⑧ rice⑨ salt ⑩ vegetables |
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six. |
2. What is the leading factor for this round of growth of commodity prices? |
A. The growth of gold prices. B. The speculators' seeking higher profits. C. Growth of demands in developed economies. D. Growth in manufacturing in developing nations. |
3. The underlined word "condemned" in the last but one paragraph probably means ______. |
A. blamed B. killed C. limited D. tolerated |
4. What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph? |
A. Measures to be taken by the United Nations. B. Solutions to this problem for developing nations. C. The disadvantages of high prices of commodities. D. How to bring down the high prices of commodities. |

World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is meant to encourage a 24-hour period free from all forms of tobacco consumption (消费) across the globe. The day is further intended to draw global attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to 5.4 million deaths worldwide annually (每年). The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) in 1987. In the past twenty years, the day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance across the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco industry. The WHO cites (提到)tobacco use as "one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced." Tobacco is the number one preventable cause of disability and death. Tobacco can have many negative health effects; it is a risk factor for six out of eight of the leading causes of death in the world, Such as cardiovascular (心血管的) disease, lung diseases, and various cancers. The WHO blames 1 in 10 deaths worldwide on tobacco use, which equates to 5.4 million today. By 2030, they estimate that the number of tobacco-related deaths will have risen to 8 million. Because of these issues, tobacco consumption is seen by the WHO as a key public health issue. WNTD is a part of the WHO's larger strategy to change tobacco-related thinking and behaviors around the world with the aim of making the world healthier. According to the WHO, the point of World No Tobacco Day is to ask people to give up using all tobacco products for 24 hours in order to begin breaking their addiction to the "harmful and wasteful habit." The day is meant to raise awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco and advocate far better polices to reduce consumption worldwide. | ||||||||||
