In her sixth period today, Mrs. Cox has taught a poem by a well-known black writer in the United States. She wrote the poem on the blackboard and read it aloud. No sooner had she finished reading the poem than students' questions began pouring in. One boy said the poem was heart-breakingly sad. Another student, a girl, said she had read a book by the same writer, but she wasn't able to enjoy it as much as her mother did, and she didn't know why. A third, a keen viewer of TV theatre, recognized a phrase in the poem which had been used as the title of a recent play. As she answered the questions, Mrs. Cox made sure that her students understood every line of the poem. he asked them to discuss if the poem contained any message. The discussion became so lively that no one wanted to stop when the bell rang. Some said there was no message, some said it didn't really matter, and the class ended at that. As she drove home, Mrs. Cox thought about the class she had just left. Today she could feel good about what she had accomplished as a teacher. None of her students looked bored. Every one of them seemed interested in the poem. Once they started to talk, they forget about the time. She did not have to make them learn? she only had to answer their questions and to guide the discussion. This, she thought to herself, is what teaching is all about! 1. Shyness May Be PartlyInherited About 92 million Americans are shy, and according to recent research about half of them inherited the trait. The studies were discussed at the American Psychological Convention. One study, by Harvard University, was of babies 21- 48 months old. It concluded that these babies had a high heart rate when shown unfamiliar people or different toys. Although shyness is not new, it has only recently become of interest to researchers. The first study on the genetic connection was in 1979. According to Warren Jones of the University of Tulsa, social relations these days are more complex. "With less ritual(仪式) and more complex situations," he said, "shyness is a national concern." Not all shy people are anxious and fearful, according to another study. Evidence shows that only half of shy people are tense, worried, and fearful in social situations. Many men use shyness as an excuse for failing in social situations, according to C.R. Snyder of the University of Kansas. "This is not true of females. Perhaps, American men are pressured to be assertive(自信的) and successful. So they would rather say they're shy than admit they're incompetent." Shy people may do very well socially after the first meeting with someone. In fact, shypeople tend to be more stable. The psychologists said shyness seems to be cultural. Japan has the highest rating. China and Israel have the lowest rating. The United States rated in the middle. 1. The word "trait" in the first paragraph means ______ A. way B. tradition C. character D. possession 2. Those babies studied were ______ when they saw unfamiliar people or different toys. A. tense or fearful B. calm C. as usual D. stable 3. Which of the following statements is Wrong? A. Researchers began to study shyness when it was known to them. B. Why would American men rather say they're shy than admit they're incompetent? Because ______. A. shyness is usually used as an excuse by them. B. shyness is a good excuse. C. females don't use shyness as an excuse. D. they are under the pressure of social situations. 5.We can learn from this passage that ______ A. shyness is naturally inherited B. shy people have virtues as well as shortcomings. My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software. If you come to visit, you'll probably be surprised when you come in someone will give you an electronic PIN (个人身份号码) to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it's dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest to you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings. Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console, a small machine that turns things on and off around you. The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car. The car works for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console. I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I've put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I've put in today. I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself nstead, "How will I live without them?" 1. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. How to develop a new system. B. The function of the PIN C. A home for the future D. Easy life in the future. 2. What's the purpose when the writer wrote the fourth paragraph? A. To let readers know why his ideas are new B. To explain what the functions of the PIN and the console are C. To explain the importance of the PIN and the console. D. To let readers know how special his house is. 3. The writer's new house is different from ordinary ones mainly because _______. A. it has your favorite music following you B. you can make a telephone call anywhere C. the writer is able to change his new idea into practice D. it has been controlled by computers 4. What is the writer most likely to be according to the passage? A. An IT expert B. A famous doctor C. An idealist D. An experienced teacher |

Japanese Students Suffer from Pressure Last April,15-year-old Rei Iwasaki stopped her piano and flute lessons and began to study every day of the week. Her parents paid to send her to a "cram school(灌输式教学模式的学校)."She wanted very much to pass her exams. In February she did pass an all-day, five-subject examination and entered the high school she hoped to enter. Thirteen-year-old Akio Yoshiwara wasn't so lucky. Unable to take the pressure of the exams, he hanged himself in February. He left a suicide note which said, "I did my best in this dear life, but it's no good." Suicides are now a common part of life among students in Japan. The cause is the incredible pressure of the "examination hell." Even a number of teachers are committing suicide each year. When some students broke windows in a school near Tokyo, the principal blamed himself and wrote the following note: "The incidents were due to the lack of appropriate measures by the principal and I apologize. I am very tired. The Japanese educational system is much different from the American system. It is perhaps the most regimented(严密组织的) school system in any of the industrialized nations. Boys and girls wear uniforms and go to school six days a week --- 240 days a year compared to 180 in the U.S. Ninety- five percent graduate from high school compared to seventy-five percent in the U.S. Students don't ask questions in class but only listen respectfully to the teachers. And every few years students are tested to see which school they will enter next. There is stiff competition for the "best" schools. The result is a well-informed, disciplined student, ideal for factory and company work and excellent at learning specialized skills. But there is little fun in education, little creativity and the incredible pressure of "examination hell." 1. It's because ______ that many Japanese students committed suicide. A. they didn't do their best in their lives. B. they were sent to a "cram school". C. of the most regimented school. D. they were unable to take the pressure of the exams. 2. Why did the principal kill himself? Because__________ A. He thought it was his fault that some students broke the windows. B. He was very tired. C. He couldn't stand the pressure of the "examination hell". D. He blamed himself and wrote a note. 3. Which of the following ideas agrees with the title of the passage. A. The Japanese students love to study under pressure. B. The Japanese students do well under pressure. C. The exams give the Japanese students much pressure. D. The exams make the Japanese students commit suicide each year. 4. Which of the following is Wrong? A. The American educational system is much different from the Japanese system. B. To enter a high school, a student must pass an all-day, five-subject examination. C. The Japanese graduates from high school are much less than the American graduates. D. In Japanese education, there is little creativity as well as little fun. |
