You do not 8 a pile of letters white apologizing to a person 9 in position after blaming him or her a mistake that turned out to be your 10 . You do not apologize to a hostess (女主人), whose guest of honor you treat 11 , by flowers the next day without mentioning your bad 12 . One of the important things you should do for an 13 apology is a readiness to 14 the responsibility (责任) for our careless mistakes. We are used to making excuses, which leaves no 15 for the other person to 16 us. Since most people are open-hearted, the no excuse apology leaves both parties feeling 17 about themselves. That, after all, is the 18 of every apology. It 19 little whether the apolagizer is wholly or only partly at fault: answering for one' s 20 encourages others to take their share of the blame. | ||||

As an aid-fashioned as it sounds, doctors say the best way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. For women who are middle-aged 'or older, experts say an hour of daily exercise is necessary just to keep weight. But for most women, fitting in an hour of exercise in an already busy day is difficult, and it is even impossible. Especially for many women, most hours are already filled with a full-time job and raising a family. At the end of the tiring day, at least in the U.S., there is little incentive to prepare a dinner when fast food is so available--and so much more fattening. Nearly twenty million women in the U.S. have the problem of obesity. The United Nations report notes that America is one of the countries that have the most obese people in the world and Mississippi has more overweight women than any other state in the U.S.. The U. S. Center for Disease Control says the number of overweight women increased by 60% between 2004 and 2009 in America. The World Health Organization says more than one billion women in other nations are in the same shape. While there is plenty of advice on how to lose kilograms, a new study is carried out on middie-aged and older women who keep normal body weight, or BMI (Body Mass Index). "We found that physical activity was effective in controlling weight only among women who started to gain weight from a normal BMI ,'I-Min Lee and her colleagues found more exercise did not help. "Once a woman is obese, there was no relation between physical activity and weight change among these women, "Lee said. The researchers say the only way that obese women can lose weight is to simply cut calories. |
1. What makes it difficult for most women to have an hour of exercise every day? |
A. Losing confidence in exercising. B. Paying all attention to their jobs. C. Having no interest in exercising. D. Being too busy to find spare time. |
2. The third paragraph shows us that ______. |
A. more and more women are caring about their weight B. the problem of woman obesity worldwide is serious C. many organizations are built to care about fat women D. America has more overweight women than any other country |
3. What should an obese woman do to lose weight according to Lee? |
A. Eat more vegetables and fruit and less fat. B. Keep busy all day long and do a lot of exercise. C. Find a high energy costing and tiring job. D. Sleep less, eating less and exercising more. |
4. From the passage, we know an hour of daily exercise can ______. |
A. help people to lose weight B. make people put on weight C. make people keep weight D. keep people busy |

"It was all his own idea," says Pat Peters, the 38-year-old wife of Palo Alto (帕罗奥图市 ,属美国加利福利亚州), California high school football coach Bob Peters, 39. Bob had just drawn up a "motherhood contract" - a document stating that for 70 days this summer he would take over the care and feeding of the couple's four children, plus all household chores. Although he didn't even know how to make coffee when he signed, he was quite confident. (He though t the experience would make a nice book.) After 40 of the 70 days, he was ready to give up. "I was beaten down, completely humbled," admits Peters. Three weeks later he spoke to the local press (also part of the bargain), stating, "Not only is motherhood a difficult task, not only is it never-ending, it is an impossible job for any normal human being." Bob and Pat were high school sweethearts. After they were married in 1960, she worked as a secretary to help pat him through university. Since then Bob has been the football and wrestling coach at Palo Alto's Cubberley High while Pat raised the kids. Then two years ago Pat went back to work as a secretary at Cubberley. "I had been around children so much, "she sighs, "I couldn't talk to a grown-up." She continued to run the house-hold, however until Bob signed the contract, whereupon she decided to relax and enjoy it. Although Peters had consulted (咨询) with his school's home economics teachers and the head of the cafeteria (食堂), his meals were sometimes a disaster. "I tried to slip the butter I'd forgotten under the eggs after they were frying," he says. For the last three weeks, the family ate out a lot sometimes having Macdonald's hamburgers for lunch and dinner. As for housekeeping, a home economics teacher had told Bob that a room always looks clean if the bed is made. "I found an easier way I shut the doors," he says. Soon the kids were wearing the same clothes for a week. I made them wear their shirts inside out, and when we went to pick up Pat at work they turned them right side out so they would look clean." Now that Bob has publicly admitted he was wrong, he is routinely (日常地)sharing the child-raising and household tasks with Pat. The tentative (暂定的) tide of his book about the summer is taken from something he shouted at the kids one day. |

When I was an educational official in Palo Alto, California, Polly Tyner, the president of our school board, wrote a letter that was printed in the Palo Alto Times. Polly's son, Jim, had great difficulty in school. He was classified as educationally disabled and required a great deal of patience on the part of his parents and teachers. But Jim was a happy kid with a great smile that lit up the room. His paront8 acknowledged his academic difficulties, but always tried to help him see his strengths so that he could walk with pride. Shortly after Jim finished high school, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. After his death, his mother submitted (提交) letter to the newspaper. Today we buried our 20-yeer-old son. He was killed instantly in a motorcycle accident on Friday night. How I with I had known when I talked to him last that it would be the last time. If I had only known I would have said, "Jim, I love you and I'm very proud of you" I would have taken the time to count the many blessings he brought to the lives of the many who loved him. I would have taken the time to appreciate his beautiful smile, the sound of his laughter, hit genuine love of people. When you put all the good qualities on the scale and try to balance all the irritating phenomena such as the radio which was always too loud, the haircut that wasn't to our liking, the dirty socks under the bed, etc., your angry feelings won't amount to much. I won't get another chance to tell my son all that I would have wanted him to bear, but, ether parents, you do have a chance. Tell your young people what you would want them to hear if you knew it would be your last conversation. The last time I talked to Jim was the day he died. He called me to say, "Hi, Mom! I just called to say I love you. Got to go to work. Bye." He gave me something to treasure forever If there is any purpose at all for Jim's death, maybe it is to make others appreciate more of life and to have people, especially family members, take the time to let each other know just how much we care. |
1. Accosting to the passage, we know that ______. |
A. Jim kept to himself B. Jim did very well in his studies C. Jim a parents were patient with him D. Jim failed to finish his high school |
2. By writing the letter printed in the Pain Alto Times, the author intends to ______. |
A. mourn her son's sudden death in a traffic accident B. remind people to be cautious of motorcycles C. advise people to take the chance to express their love in time D. appreciate more of life than ever before |
3. What can be the best title of the passage? |
A. Love your Family. B. Do it Today. C. Walk with Pride. D. Appreciate Smiles. |
4. The underlined word "irritating" in Paragraph 4 means ______. |

认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词. 注意:每个空格只填1 个单词.请将答案写在答题卡相应题号的横线上. Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion? In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned. Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences. In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts. Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship. In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others. Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish? Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish? |
