When we were young,we had dreams and expectations. We imagine things,we keep thinking about what we want to be,what we want to do,what makes us proud and happy and what we will become. We grew up,and everything seemed like having its own way.We accept our success or failures and we move on.The change, the need to do the important things, the jobs, the pressures and the failures, all kill part of our dreams. Things have changed, but they cannot really take away the dreams. We still have to dream on,to realize our desires, our wants, our future, even when we are considered too old for such things . Cornel Sanders started his business when he was sixty, and started the whole successful KFC business. The main thing is not the age-whether being too old,or too young, but it is the desire to dream on,and the courage to realize it. Having a dream, taking it to sleep, thinking about it,planning it,and adding all the fun to our dreams will make us a bit closer to the realization of our dreams. Businessmen start with a dream, a simple wish of small restaurant operation, or a huge business of realestate (房地产) development,or a training center for English education,or just any other selfemployed money earning fun. The ability to dream on is one of the fine qualities of human race that other animals do not have.So dream on,and put a deadline:make it a giant dream,a small one,an old one,a newfound one,a hobby related one,a change of life one,a religious one,a stupid one,or just whatever...just continue to dream on...Then, Just Go and Do It! |
1.According to the passage, which of the following may not cause the failure of our dreams? |

2.The writer mentioned KFC in this passage in order to tell us:________. |
A.If you want to succeed, you have to wait to work at 60 B.KFC is quite popular with all the young people in the world C.It is not the age but the desire and courage that makes your dream come true D.Cornel Sanders the founder of KFC had a dream when he was young |
3.What does the underlined word "giant" in paragraph 5 probably mean? |
A.Big. B.Small. C.Wise. D.Common. |
4.Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage? |
A.Dream on. B.Dream and Facts. C.KFC and Dream. D.One World,One Dream. |

Long ago, poems were recited out loud instead of being written down. When the Greeks first started the Olympics, they held poetry contests as well as athletic competitions. Now,poetry competitions have been revived (恢 复).This year 120,000 high school students competed in the first Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest, performing poems from memory for $100,000 in prizes. The first competitions were held in classrooms. The winners went on to schoolwide contests, and then they competed in city and state competitions. Finally, the 50 state champions, along with the District of Columbia champion came to Washington,D.C.last week for the last showdown. After the 51 champions competed against one another,12 went on to the finals. Then the field was narrowed to five. The final five had one last chance to "perform" a poem. The overall champ,Jackson Hille,a high school senior from Ohio, won a $20,000 scholarship. The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started Poetry Out Loud because they realized that hearing a poem performed is a different experience from reading it on a page. It's not just a matter of saying the words in the right order. It's the tone of voice, the pauses, the gestures, and the attitude of the person performing that bring the words to life."Each time we hear somebody recite a poem,we find something fresh and interesting about it," says National Public Radio Broadcaster Scott Simon, master of ceremonies for the finals.Hearing it in a new voice offers something new to the listener. Not only do the people hearing poems have a new experience, memorizing and presenting poems helps the participants (选手) understand those poems in a new way.Another benefit of a competition such as Poetry Out Loud is that the participants learn publicspeaking skills that can help them for life. |

A.become skilled in speaking in public B.write good poems themselves C.change their attitudes towards life D.make friends with many great poets |

Washington (Reuters)-People who drink two or more sweetened soft drinks a week have a much higher risk of pancreatic cancer (胰腺癌),an unusual but deadly cancer, researchers reported on Monday. People who drank mostly fruit juice instead of sodas did not have the same risk, the study of 60,000 people in Singapore found. Sugar may be to blame but people who drink sweetened sodas regularly often have other poor health habits, said Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota, who led the study. "The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin (胰岛素) in the body, which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth," Pereira said in a statement. Writing in the journal Cancer Epidemiology,Biomarkers & Prevention,Pereira and his colleagues said they followed 60,524 men and women in the Singapore Chinese Health Study for 14 years. Over that time,140 of the volunteers developed pancreatic cancer. Those who drank two or more sweetened soft drinks a week had an 87 percent higher risk of being among those who got pancreatic cancer. Pereira said he believed the findings would apply elsewhere. "Singapore is a wealthy country with excellent healthcare.Favorite pastimes (消遣) are eating and shopping,so the findings should apply to other Western countries," he said. But Susan Mayne of the Yale Cancer Center at Yale University in Connecticut was cautious. "Although this study found a risk, the finding was based on a relatively small number of cases and it remains unclear whether it is a causal (因果的) connection or not," said Mayne, who serves on the board of the journal, which is published by the American Association for Cancer Research. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with 230,000 cases globally. In the United States,37,680 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in a year and 34,290 die of it. |
1.According to the text, who is in control of the health study? |
A.Mark Pereira. B.Scientists from Singapore. C.Researchers in Yale. D.Susan Mayne. |
2.We can infer from Pereira's words that________. |
A.the healthcare in Singapore should be greatly improved B.2 soft drinks a day are considered harmful to health C.87 out of 140 volunteers developed pancreatic cancer D.sugar might not be the only cause of pancreatic cancer |
3.How does Susan seem to feel about the findings of the study? |
A.Satisfied. B.Doubtful. C.Worried. D.Hopeful. |
4.The best title of the text might be________. |
A.The Deadliest Forms of Cancer B.Drink Fruit Juice Instead of Sodas C.A Study in University of Minnesota D.Sugary Soft Drinks Lead to Cancer |

When you are little,it's not hard to believe you can change the world.I remember my enthusiasm when,at the age of 12,I addressed the people at the Rio Earth Summit."I am only a child," I told them."Yet I know that if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environmental answers, what a wonderful place this world would be.At school you teach us not to fight with others,to work things out,to respect others,to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures,to share, not to be greedy. Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do.You grownups say you love us,but I challenge you, please,to make your actions reflect your words." I spoke for six minutes and received a standing ovation. Some of the people even cried.I thought that maybe I had reached some of them, that my speech might actually spur (刺激) action. Now,ten years from Rio,after I've sat through many more conferences,I'm not sure what has been achieved. My confidence in the people in power and in the power of an individual's voice to reach them has been deeply shaken. When I was little, the world was simple. But as a young adult, I'm learning that as we have to make choices-education,career,lifestyle-life gets more and more complicated. We are beginning to feel pressure to produce and be successful. We are taught that economic growth is progress, but we aren't taught how to seek a happy, healthy way of living. And we are learning that what we wanted for the future when we were 12 was idealistic and naive (天真的). Today I'm no longer a child, but I'm worried about what kind of environment my children will grow up in. I know change is possible, because I am changing, still figuring out what I think.I am still deciding how to live my life. The challenges are great, but if we accept individual responsibility and make choices,we will rise to the challenges, and we will become part of the positive tide of the change. I hope this goal will be met through our common efforts.Thank you all. |

A new guidebook says being_happy_is_just_like_being_fit-you need to practice the skills needed to get this emotion, even during the darkest times. Roadtesting Happiness:How to be Happier by Australian journalist and author Sophie Scott is a selfhelp book with a difference. " Being happy is something you need to focus on;it doesn't come as a matter of course," Scott said."You always need to make an effort to be happy, even if you reach the point of saying you are contented, you still need to keep focusing and working on the things that made you happy." Scott also said the book was born out of her interest in the human mind as well as how difficult she found it to cope after her mother died of cancer two years ago. "I was always interested in psychology, but a lot of happiness books don't address the fact that you can be happy even if your life isn't going according to plan. The key is managing expectations." She says,"In the book,I focused on what were the things most likely to make people happy, the ones with the most scientific evidence." People should think that being happy is yet another task you have to do and then feel guilty when you don't do it.Scott says the road to a positive outlook begins with very easy, small steps. "Women in particular today______________:they've got to be thin, got to have a career, got to have a perfect relationship so the last thing you need is to be thinking you've got to be happy all the time," she said."But it is important to improve your quality of life.Stop rushing around and filling each moment of the day with things to do,and then sit down and think about your life and how you're feeling. The things I got out of this were not things that take a lot of effort:feeling more grateful for the things you've got;adjusting your reaction to situations and people. It's about changing small habits, more tinkering around the edges instead of totally checking and changing your life." |
1.By saying "being happy is just like being fit",the author probably means________. |
A.people should practice how to remain happy B.people should spend more time working out C.keeping happy is the key to continuing our life D.it's difficult for people to keep happy all the time |
2.What should we do if we want to remain happy in Scott's opinion? |
A.Do some scientific research into the skills of being happy. B.Work hard to achieve your expectations. C.Read more books about psychological activities. D.Think that being happy is a very important task to do. |
3.Which of the following would be proper to be filled in the blank? |
A.get high expectation B.feel overloaded C.can't look after themselves well D.have no friends to help them |

In the past 100 years Asian Americans have become the fastestgrowing US minority. As their children began moving up through the nation's schools,it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was forming.Their achievements are reflected in the nation's best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on an Asian character. This special liking for mathematics is partly explained by the fact that AsianAmerican students who began their education abroad arrived in the US with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college.Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment (投资) in education is more immediate in something like engineering than that with an arts degree. Most AsianAmerican students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do,and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture that promotes success, such as ideals that stress family values and education. | |
