I will be traveling to Australia as a Student Ambassador with People to People. People
to People arranges for American students to travel all around the world to learn about other
cultures, and to help others understand American culture. The program was founded by
former President Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote peace through understanding.
I had to put in many hours of special work to get to this point. First, a teacher nominated
(推荐) me, and then I attended an informational meeting about the program. The application
process included an interview, and finally, I was accepted.
That's when the hard work really began. In addition to attending monthly meetings to
prepare for the big trip, my parents encouraged my twin sister Beth (also participating in
the program) and me to raise $ 2,000 each to help pay for the cost. And so the fund-raising
began. We did everything from selling candy bars to selling an old car to decorating people's
mailboxes during the holiday season. We also babysat, washed cars, held a yard sale, and
washed windows. After months of hard work I had raised a total of $2319.87! Combined,
    Beth and I raised over $ 4500.00!
Now I have a problem-packing. Yes, I know it sounds unimportant, but my suitcase
seems to have shrunk (收缩) as I placed my belongings inside. According to airline
regulations (规定), a suitcase can be no larger than 54 inches and weigh no more than 44
pounds. For a person who likes to wear a different outfit every day, packing all my clothes
into such a small space seemed an impossible task. However, I have lessened my load and
my suitcase which started out weighting overweight now checks in at a mere 36. Apart from
a slightly bloated (臃肿) carry-on bag, my luggage is definitely manageable.
I doubt that I will not get much sleep tonight because I am so excited! I know that what
lies ahead is going to be the trip of lifetime!

    1. When does the author write the passage?______
    A. Before leaving for Australia.
    B. Several months before the journey.
    C. Just hours after reaching the destination.
    D. The night when she was accepted.
    2. Which of the following is not the aim of People to People program?______
    A. To promote peace through understanding.
    B. To collect money for traveling.
    C. To make American culture known to others.
    D. To learn about other cultures.
    3. Which is the correct order of the author' preparation for the journey?______
    a. being accepted as a member
    b. raising money for the trip
    c. attending a meeting about the program
    d. packing belongings
    e. being nominated by the teacher
    A. e, a, b, c, d
    B. a, c, e, d, b
    C. e, c, a, d, b
    D. e, c, a, b, d
    4. What does the author think of the journey?_____
    A. It could be a tiring expensive journey.
    B. It could be long-lasting journey, which needs taking all daily necessities.
    C. It could be an exciting, unforgettable journey.
    D. It could be an overseas journey, during which she would experience hard labor.

Arthur Miller(1915-2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists
of the 20th century. Miller's father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary, drawn
like so many others by the" Great American Dream". However, he experienced severe
financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the
    early l930s.
Millers' s most famous play, Death of a Salesman , is a powerful attack on the American
system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social
status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has
got into trouble with his worth. Willy is "burnt out" and in the cruel world of business there
is no room for sentiment: if he can't do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the
Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at loss as to what
to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself
    in the end.
When it was first staged in 1949, the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and
it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and
the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.
Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, on the evening of February
10,2005,the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.

    1. Why did Arthur Miller' s father move to the USA?______
    A. He suffered from severe hunger in his home country.
    B. He was attracted by the "Great American Dream".
    C. He hoped to make his son a dramatist.

    A. exposes the cruelty of the American business world
    B. discusses the ways to get promoted in a company
    C. talks about the business career of Arthur Miller
    D. focuses on the skills in doing business
    3. What can we learn about Willy Loman?______
    A. He treats his employer badly.
    B. He runs the Wagner Company.
    C. He is a victim of the American system.
    D. He is regarded as a hero by his colleagues.
    4. What is the text mainly about?______

Special Bridges Help Animals Cross the Road
                                                                - Reported by Sheila Carrick
Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.
Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more worried
about how the grizzly bear(灰熊) and mountain lion can cross the road.
"Millions of animals die each year on US roads," the Federal Highway Administration
reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the US today. The
    main reason? Road kill.
"Ecopassages (生态通道)" may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars.
They are paths both over and under roads. "These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so
that wildlife can avoid road accidents," said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society.
But do animals actually use the ecopassages? The answer is yes. Paul Beier of Northern
Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an ecopassage that went under
a highway. This showed that the lions used the passage.
Builders of ecopassages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting
trees on and around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals as different as
salamanders(火蜥蜴) and grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.
The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around.
You might see an animal overpass!
    1. The writer uses the example of "ocelots" to show that ________.
    A. wild animals have become more dangerous
    B. the driving conditions have improved greatly
    C. the measure for projecting wildlife fails to work
    D. an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidents
    2. From the news story, we know an ecopassage is ________.
    A. an underground path for cars
    B. a fence built for the safety of the area
    C. a bridge for animals to get over a river
    D. a path for animals to cross the road
    3. When the writer says that "Animals seem to be catching on", he means ________.
    A. animals begin to realize the dangers on the road
    B. animals begin to learn to use ecopassages
    C. animals are crossing the road in groups
    D. animals are increasing in number
    4. The writer asks visitors and drivers to look around when traveling because________
    A. wild animals may attack cars
    B. wild animals may jam the road
    C. they may see wild animals in the park
    D. they may see wild animals on ecopassages

Space travel is definitely bad for astronauts' bones, reducing their bone density(密度)
after only a month of weightlessness, according to French research published on Friday.
Laurence Vico and his fellow workers at St Etienne University called for more research
into the effects of microgravity, after their study of 15 astronauts from the Russian MIR station
showed bone loss continued throughout space flights.
"Bone loss was especially striking in four astronauts, " the scientists reported in the Lancet
    Medical Journal.
They measured the bone mineral density (BMD) of bones in the forearm(前臂) and
lower leg of the astronauts who had spent one to six months in space.
The BMD loss was significant in the tibia(胫骨) of the lower leg, a weight-bearing bone,
but barely changed in the radius(桡骨) of the forearm. "Our results indicate the need to
investigate not only different bones, but also different areas of the same bone since not all
sites of the skeleton (骨架) are similarly affected by space conditions, " they added.
Without gravity the body isn't bearing any weight so there is no need for calcium (钙)
which makes bones strong, and it becomes empty into the bloodstream.
The research team suggested in future scientists should try to determine if the loss of bone
density was only on weight-bearing bones on longer flights, also the possible recovery after
    returning to Earth.
    1. French scientists did their research on Russian astronauts, because _______.
    A. they only cared for the Russian astronauts
    B. they were not interested in their own astronauts
    C. the Russian government invited them to do their research
    D. the Russian astronauts worked in space for a period of time
    2. Scientists have found that _______.
    A. the BMD loss may cause serious illness to astronauts
    B. the BMD loss may cause some change in astronauts' bodies
    C. astronauts shouldn't care about the BMD loss
    D. astronauts should take some calcium before space travel
    3. What cause the BMD loss to astronauts, according to this passage?
    A. The food they eat in space.
    B. The drinks they take in space.
    C. The temperature in space.
    D. The gravity in space.
    4. In the third paragraph, the underlined word "striking" means ______.
    A. unusual
    B. simple
    C. weak
    D. slow

I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year - round sun. You may think people in
such an attractive, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken
ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still think fun equals happiness. The truth is that fun and happiness
have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is
what we experience after an act. It is a deep, long-lasting emotion.
Going to an amusement park or a ball game, watching a movie or television are fun
activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But
they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that
happiness has nothing to do with fun. They have constant access to exciting parties, fancy
cars, expensive homes, everything that spells "happiness". But in memoir(回忆录)after
memoir, they expose the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism,
drug addiction, broken marriages and loneliness.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less
satisfying. If he is honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For
commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement.
Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun
over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they want.
Couples with babies are lucky to get a whole night' s sleep. I don't know any parent who
would choose the word fun to describe raising children.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the
most liberating realizations we can ever come to. It liberates time: now we can devote more
hours to activities that can truly increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new
car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless.
And it frees us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and famous people we were
so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

    1. What is the passage mainly about?_____

    C. Marriage and commitment.
    D. Entertainment and responsibility.
    2. The author probably agrees that _____.
