Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson,Arizona. He moved there a few years ago,and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends. My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him, he seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A's and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as "successful" as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say , feeling on guard. On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father's friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We talked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son's funny facial expressions. Cone was my father's critical air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before? The next day dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years , I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I'm at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, l'm delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was. |

We were on our way home from Houston, Texas around the Weston Lakes area one Saturday morning. We decided to stop at a local gas station to get coffee and something to snack on since it was a good hour and a half before we got home. When we were done, we got back into our car and before I started it, we noticed a man standing outside in front of the building. He was a homeless man with worn clothes and it looked like he had gone in and gotten himself some coffee or something warm to drink since it was cold this time of the year. He must have not had enough money to get something to eat. Then a dog walked up to the front of the building. I could tell she was a female, because you could see that she had been feeding puppies ( baby dogs) . She was terribly in need of something to eat and I felt so bad for her. I knew if she didn't eat soon, she and her puppies would not make it. I and my wife sat there and looked at her. We noticed that people walked by and didn't even pet her, like most people do when they walk by an animal in front of a store. We still did not do anything. But the homeless man, who I thought did not buy himself anything to eat, went back into the store. And what he did brought tears to me and my wife. He had gone into the store and with what money he may have had, bought a can of dog food and fed that dog. This story plays a great part in our lives. You see, that was Mother's Day weekend. And a lot of people forget that some animals are parents too. It took a homeless man, to show me what I should have done. He made me a better man that day. |

Ever since he first started practicing, Berkeley, California, psychologist Allen D. Kanner, PhD, has been asking his younger clients (顾客) what they wanted to do when they grew up. The answer usedtobe" nurse" , " astronaut" orsomeotheroccupation that appealed to them. Today the answer is more likely to be "make money". For Kanner, one explanation for that change can be found in advertising. "Advertising is a multi-million dollar project that's having an enormous influence on child development, " says Kanner, who is also a member at a clinical (临床的) psychology training program called the Wright Institute. "Advertising is growing rapidly and entering new areas of childhood, like our schools. " According to Kanner, the result is not only the spread of materialistic(物质第一的 ) values among children, but also something he calls " self-love wounding" of children." Thanks to advertising, " he says, " children have become convinced that they're unfortunate if they don't have an endless supply of new products. " Now Kanner and several colleagues are up-in-arms with the psychologists and others who are using psychological knowledge to help marketers target children more effectively. They're shocked when they are told the secret behind why 3 to 7-year-olds are attracted to toys that transform themselves into something else and why 8 to 12-year-olds love to collect things. Last fall, Kanner and a group of 59 other psychologists and psychiatrists (精神病学家) sent a letter speaking against psychologists' employment by advertisers to American Psychologcal Association( APA) . In response, at its June meeting, APA's Board of Directors acted on a recommendation from the Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest and approved the creation of a task force to study the issue. The task force will examine the research on advertising's influence on children and their families. The group will look at the role psychologists play in what some consider the exploitation (利用) of children and consider how psychology can help reduce advertising's harmful effects and increase its positive effects. The group will also explore implications(含意)for public policy. |

A British student writing for the Guardian's website recently attracted the criticism of thousands of readers with his very first post. Max Gogarty, 19, had started a blog about his trip to India and Thailand. The idea was not paiticularly original and. in many people's view, the writing wasn't either.Within minutes, people began to post negative comments:"l've been more entertained cleaning mould from my fridge than I was reading your first post. " So how did Max land his job? The Guardian's online community soon reached their own conclusion :" Great to see nepotism ( 任人唯亲) is alive and well."said one poster. Max's father is a travel writer who had previously published work in the Guardian. Within minutes, one poster had provided a link to an article from 2002 , in which Max's dad writes about a trip to Thailand with his family. Many were quick to suppose Max had used his father's connections to get his job. By the end of the next day, the criticism was so heavy that the blog was closed, but the damage had been done. From Facebook to Wikipedia. social networking and gossip websites all over the Internet were discussing Max's case. Max's experience highlights the difference between traditional media and the Internet. As online community specialist DanWilsonwritesinhisblog: " Inthe blogosphere respect comes from below. Readers have power and opinions that count. You've got to be real and attractive to the people who read you. " Part of the reason for this is that falsehoods and half-truths canbe exposed(曝光) immediately online. For example, the Guardian's travel editor attempted to defend publishing the story. He said he'd called Max because of his track record and talent. But then one reader pointed out: " Didn't you post yesterday sayingMax got in touch with us because he writes occasionally for the TV program Skins'? Are you a liar?" What we can learn here is to be careful when we read and write online. Always be sure to think about why a person might be writing something, and don't necessarily believe what we read. Title:______

Impatient drivers, pushy people on the subway, kids shouting into their mobile phones... we see these unpleasant incidents almost every day. This is why Canadian filmmaker John Curtin's new documentary, To Hell With Manners! The Decline of Civility ,couldn't be more timely. He puts these impolite behaviors under a microscope in an attempt to explain why we seem to have become so much ruder in recent years. Curtin travels to New York and London to record rude and sometimes not-so-rude behaviors. " I'm not actually saying that everyone is impolite. I would say we are becoming less kind to each other simply because we're not paying attention to one another, " he said. Cutin attributes people's indifference (冷漠) largely to the modern technology we have: iPods, cellphones and stuff like that. Montreal Gazette columnist Josh Freed, who talks in the film, agrees withCurtin." We've become less human as a result of these technological advances and by the fact that,so often,we're now surrounded by strangers, " Freed said. Curtin wanted at all costs to make sure his film was not full of older people talking about how impolite young people have become. Instead, _________ "We just live in a very rushed, stressed-out society and it's very easy to feel you're under pressure and you've got to take care of yourself. So we imagine ourselves in some kind of Darwinian struggle where you have got to take care of number one," Curtin said. 1. Why does the author think Curtin's new documentary couldn't be more timely?
