It was her giggling that drew my attention.Note taking really wasn't all that funny. Walking over to the offender, I asked for the_1_.Frozen, she refused to give it to me.I waited, all attention in the classroom on the quiet 2 between teacher and student. When she finally 3 it over she whispered, "Okay, but I didn't draw it." It was a handdrawn 4 of me, teeth blackened and the words "I'm stupid" coming out of my mouth. I managed to fold it up calmly. My mind, 5 , was working angrily as I struggled not to 6 . I figured I knew the two most likely candidates for drawing the picture. It would do them some 7 to teach them a lesson, and maybe it was high time that I did it! Thankfully, I was able to keep myself 8 . When there were about six minutes remaining, I showed the class the picture. They were all silent as I told them how 9 this was for me.I told them there must be a reason 10 and now was their chance to write down anything they needed to tell me.Then I let them write silently while I sniffed in the back of the classroom. As I 11 the notes later, many of them said something like, "I've got nothing against you," or "I'm sorry you were hurt." Some kids said, "We're 12 of you." But two notes, from the girls who I 13 were behind the picture, had a list of issues.I was too 14 , too strict… Reading those notes, I realized that over the course of this year, instead of 15 my students, I had begun commanding them to 16 .Where I thought I was driving them to success I was 17 driving them away. I had some apologizing to do.But the next day in the classroom, one boy and one girl each handed me a card. The one 18 by all the boys expressed sincere regret for the ugly joke. The one from the girls asked for 19 . This was a lesson for both the kids and me.Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the 20 . | ||||

BEIJING-Pharmacologist Tu Youyou has become the first scientist on the mainland to win America's respected Lasker Award for her discovery of a new approach to malaria (疟疾) treatment. The 81yearold was presented with the medical prize by the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation on September 23, 2011 in New York. Tu, a scientist at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing, was praised by the jury (评判委员会) for her "drug therapy (治疗) for malaria that has saved millions of lives across the globe, especially in the developing world," according to a statement on the foundation's website. In early 1969, Tu was appointed head of a government project that aimed to eradicate(消灭) malaria, and it was then that she began applying modern techniques with Chinese traditional medicine to find drug therapy for malaria. After detecting (检测) 380 extracts (提取物) made from 2,000 candidate recipes, Tu and her colleagues obtained a pure substance called "Qinghaosu", which became known as artemisinin in 1972. Ask savvy investors(投资者) how they learned their first lessons about money, and they'll probably tell you lessons their parents taught them. The money values we learn as children stay with us the rest of our lives. If you are a parent, teaching your children the value of saving and investing will benefit them the rest of their lives. Here's what you can do: Help your child begin to save. Open savings accounts for your children, and teach them how the bank adds interest to their savings that makes their money grow. Encourage your children to save a little from every bit of money they receive, such as allowances, birthday gifts, etc. You may even want to set up a matching program, contributing fifty cents for each dollar your child saves. Teach your child about stocks(股票). A child in elementary school can start learning about how businesses work. Once your child understands the basics, ask him or her to think about some of the businesses that might be good stock investments. Then use Morningstar Mutual Fund Guide(available at your library)to find a quality mutual fund that holds some of these companies, or a mutual fund that caters to children such as the Stein Roe Young Investor Fund. Many funds accept regular monthly investments as low as $50 a month, so these funds can be a good way to teach children about the stock market while saving for their college education. Encourage early IRA(个人退休金账户)saving. The new Roth IRA is a great way for children who are working in summers or after school to begin saving for their future. Imagine how much money you'd have today if you had saved $3,000 a year since you were a teenager! Let your kids handle their own money. We all learn by doing, so letting your kids manage a segment of their budget(预算)will let them earn valuable financial lessons. They may make mistakes, but they will be small mistakes that may help them avoid larger mistakes as adults. 1. Today, people all over the world are moving out of small villages in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural(乡下 的) areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years. In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a_residential_area nearby, too. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so many people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows. In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this area is usually in the city center downtown. It is here that you can see many huge skyscrapers(摩天大楼)and office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city center. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need. But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages. 1. The underlined phrase "a residential area" means an area________. A. where people can buy things B. which is suitable for living in C. where people can do business D. which is near a city center 2. Why do people move to live in cities or towns? A. Because they can live more comfortably there. B. Because they like noisy life better than peaceful life. C. Because they mainly want to find work there. D. Because they are sure of having a better life there. 3. Which of the following statement is NOT true about the business district? A. Big companies usually have their main offices in the business district. B. People usually work and live in the business district. C. A business district usually lies in the city center downtown. D. Nearly every major city has its own business district. 4. In the United States, many people work in the center of a big city________. A. and live there B. but live in the suburbs of the city C. and live in another city D. but live in rural areas 5. We can infer that this movement from rural to urban areas ________. A. has been going on for more than 2,000 years B. will surely continue in the future C. may not continue in the future D. has now stopped already |

Facebook means never having to say goodbye. The social media website has earned a reputation for reconnecting old friends.Last week,a guy whom I hadn't seen since my bachelor party five years ago sent me a friend request.I accepted and waited for "Easy E" to send me a greeting of some kind.He had sought me out, after all. I learned from his profile that he was in a relationship and had a son. However,I'm pretty sure we won't ever write walltowall, let alone email each other. But he'll remain a friend of online until one of us makes a point of removing the other from his official list. My pool of friends consists of family members, college buddies, coworkers from past and present, and friends of friends. There are 35 in all.If I spent some time uploading old email addresses,I'm confident that I could increase my friend count actually. Thanks to email, the inability to schedule facetoface meetings no longer means a friendship must come to a close. But even with email, people will lose touch if one or both parties stop writing back. That's normal.People move from school to school, job to job, city to city. You never have to feel guilty for breaking away. You must learn to behave yourself in such a way that you earn the affection and respect of others. As we have already pointed out, Americans mix business and pleasure. Therefore, learning how to chat informally (非正式地)can be a help with your American business contracts. Americans like to talk about a number of different topics-sports, politics, cars, popular movies, television shows and personal interests. Many large American cities have sports teams. If you are working with Americans in the United States, it would be a good idea to find out about the local sports teams so that you can join in the almost inevitable discussions about "What our team will do this year." Politics can be a sensitive topic unless everyone is of the same mind politically. Limit your discussions to asking questions of your friends. Most Americans are car owners and some are even obsessive(着迷的)about the subject. You can contribute to the discussion by talking about cars you have owned or by sharing information you have had in automotive magazines. Americans watch television almost every night and attend movies regularly, so naturally TV programs and the latest movies become topics for discussions. If you are unable to watch American television or attend American movies, reading the entertainment section of such magazines as Time and Newsweek will keep you up to date on what is popular in America. 1. What's the best title of the passage? (No more than 10 words) ________________________________________________________________________ 2. Why should people be careful with the topic-politics? (No more than 8 words) ________________________________________________________________________ 3. If you want to keep you up to date on what is popular in America, what should you do?
