We walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn't even lift her eyes from the book. Mum
pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched mouth
open in surprise,  Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to
the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop. She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse
looked up, Mum nodded and said, "Very dirty floors. "
"Yes, I'm glad they've finally decided to clean them, "the nurse answered. She looked at Mum

                                                                    Fresh Air will Kill You
Smog, which was once the big attraction of Los Angeles, can now be found all over the country from
Butte, Montana, to New York City, and people are getting so used to polluted air that it is very difficult
for them to breathe anything else.
I was lecturing recently, and one of my stops was Flagstaff, Arizona, which is about 7,000 feet above
sea level. As soon as I got out of the plane, I smelled something peculiar(奇怪的). "What's that smell?" I
asked the man who met me at the plane. "I don't smell anything," he replied.
"There is a definite odor that I am not familiar with," I said.
"Oh, you must be talking about the fresh air. A lot of people come out here who have never smelled
fresh air before." "What's it supposed to do?" I asked suspiciously.
"Nothing. You just breathe it like any other kind of air. It's supposed to be good for your lungs."
"I've heard that story before," I said. "How come if it's air, my eyes aren't watering?"
"Your eyes don't water with fresh air. That's the advantage of it. Saves you a lot in paper tissues."
I looked around and everything appeared crystal-clear. It was a strange sensation and made me feel
    very uncomfortable.
My host, sensing this, tried to be assuring. "Please don't worry about it. Tests have proved that you
can breathe fresh air day and night without its doing any harm to the body."

    A. Polluted.

    B. fresh air made the writer sick
    C. the air in many American cities is polluted
    D. breathing fresh air day and night does you no good

    3. How did the writer feel when he first came to Flagstaff?

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences.
Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they
    relieve these experiences in nightmares.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget
bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope
it might reduce ,or possibly erase(抹去),the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body
releasing(释放)chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the
emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, While others support
    it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They
say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
"Some memories can ruin people's lives . They come back to you when you don't want to have them
in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a
professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because
memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.
"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are.
I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

    1. The passage is mainly about____________ .

    A. a new medical invention
    B. a new research on the pill
    C. a way of erasing painful memories
    D. an argument about the research on the pill

    2. The drug tested on people can_________________.

    A. cause the brain to fix memories
    B. stop people remembering bad experiences
    C. prevent body producing certain chemicals
    D. Wipe out the emotional effects of memories

    3. We can infer from the passage that_______________.

    A. people doubt the effects of the pills
    B. the pill will stop people's bad experiences
    C. taking the pill will do harm to people's health
    D. the pill has probably been produced in America

    4. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with?

    A. Some memories can ruin people's lives.
    B. People want to get rid of bad memories.
    C. Experiencing bad events makes us different from others.
    D. The pill will reduce people's sufferings from bad memories.

Do you want to improve the way you study? Do you feel nervous before a test? Many students say
that a lack of concentration is their biggest problem. It seriously affects their ability to study, so do their
    test results.
If so, use these tips to help you.
    Study Techniques
You should always study in the same place. You shouldn't sit in a position that you use for
another purpose. For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to relax.
Don't watch TV while you are studying. Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by 50
percent if you attempt to study in this way. Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so there is
nothing to distract (make less concentrated) you. Before sitting down to study, gather together all the
equipment you need. Apart from your textbooks, pens, pencils and knives, make sure you have a
dictionary. If your study desk or table is needed when you are not studying, store all your equipment in
    a box beside it   .
Your eyes will become tired if you try to read a text which is on a flat surface. Position your book
at an angle of 30 degrees.
Be realistic and don't try to complete too much in one study period. Finish one thing before
beginning another. If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes, but try not to
telephone a friend or have something to eat.
    Test-taking Skills
All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test. Getting plenty of rest
is very important. This means do not study all night before your test! It is a better idea to have a
long-term study plan. Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months.
Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure. Doing some form of exercise every day will also improve
your concentration. Eat healthy food too.
When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down. Breathe slowly and
deeply. Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often. Above all, take no notice of
everyone else and give the test paper your undivided attention.

    1. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

    A. You should study in a different place every day, so you don't get bored.
    B. Your concentration will improve if you study and watch TV at the same time.
    C. Check the time during the exam at a certain time.
    D. Staying up all night and studying is tiring, but you will learn a lot using this method.

    2. What does the underlined word "it" refers to?

    A. Your study desk or table.
    B. Your textbook.
    C. Your dictionary.
    D. The equipment you need.

    3.  What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. You shouldn't look at everyone else during the test.
    B. You will have enough energy to deal with your study and exams by eating healthy diet.
    C. You'll concentrate more if there is nothing to distract you.
    D. If you feel tired during study, you can walk around for a few minutes.

Rodney Mace, 35, is married with two young children, and is a part-time teacher of history, "I am
constantly surprised by other people's surprise, when they come to the house and see me cleaning a
floor or hanging out the washing. Their eyes open wide at the sight of it! Much of the comment comes
form men. But I am even more surprised at the number of women who comment too."
His wife Jane, an Oxford graduate in modern languages, has a demanding full-time job. She is director
of the Cambridge House literacy scheme(扫盲计划) for adults in South London. Her working week
involves several evenings and Saturdays, and at these times her husband is in charge of home and family.
Apart from this, they share household jobs and employ a child-minder for the afternoons. This enables
him to teach two days a week and to do what he considers his principal work: writing. He has written
several books and spends much of his time in the Museum Reading Room, cycling there from his home
    in Brixton.
People ask the Maces if they think their children miss them. One can argue that satisfied parents
generally have satisfied children, but in any case the Maces are careful to spare time and energy to play
with their children. "And they have now developed relationships with other adults and children.
Before, Rodney Mace worked full-time and Jane only part-time. Then 18 months ago, the director
of the literacy scheme left. "It seems to me that Jane was very well suited to do this job. She was very
doubtful about it. But I asked her to apply. She did, and she got it." Jane Mace says that she needed
this encouragement, as so many women do.
Did his male ego(男性自我意识) suffer from the change-over? Nothing like that occurred. But he
still seems amazed at the way it changed his thinking. "I felt that we were finally going to be partners. I
felt enormous relief. I wasn't avoiding responsibility, but changing it. Our relationship is so much better
now. It has been a change for the good for both of us-think for all of us, in every aspect of our lives. I
cannot overemphasize(过高强调) that: in every aspect, I think it is necessary that the woman works.

    B. Rodney's children are quite happy with their position in the family
    C. even capable women sometimes need encouragement from their families

    A. is quite necessary in modern life

soon get full of passengers and stuffy. It is almost impossible to take your mind off the journey. Reading
is only a partial solution, for the noise of the wheels clicking on the rails soon makes you sleepy. During
the day, sleep comes in short periods. At night, when you really want to go to sleep, you can rarely
manage to do so. Surely you arrive at your destination almost worn out. Long car journeys are even less
pleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motorways you can, at least, travel fairly safely at high
speeds, but more often than not, the greater part of the journey is spent on roads with few service stations and too much traffic. By comparison, ferry trips or cruises offer a great variety of civilized comforts. You
can stretch your legs on the spacious decks, play games, meet interesting people and enjoy delicious
food-always assuming, of course, that the sea is calm. If it is not, and you are likely to get seasick, no
form of transport could be worse. Even if you travel in ideal weather, sea journeys take a long time.
Airplanes have the reputation of being unsafe and even hardened travelers are afraid of them. They
also have the disadvantages of being an expensive form of transport. But nothing can match them for
speed and comfort. Traveling at a height of 30,000 feet, far above the clouds, and at over 500 miles an
hour is a very exciting experience. You do not have to think out ways of taking your mind off the journey,
for an airplane gets you to your destination rapidly. For a few hours, you settle back in a deep armchair
to enjoy the flight. The real enjoyment is to watch a film and drink wine on some services. But even when
these things are not available, there is plenty to keep you occupied. A plane offers you an unusual and
breathtaking view of the world. The journey is so smooth that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping. No matter how you decide to spend your time, one thing is certain: you will arrive at your
destination fresh and energetic. You do not have to spend the next few days recovering from a long and
    arduous journey.
