My father and I were very close. I loved pleasing him, and he was always proud of my
success. If I won a spelling contest at school, he was on top of the world. Later in life whenever I
got a promotion(提升), I'd call my father right away and he'd rush out to tell all his friends. In
1970, when I was named president of the Ford Motor Company, I don't know which of us was
    more excited.
Like many native Italians, my parents were very open with their feelings and their loves not
only at home, but also in public. Most of my friends would never hug their fathers. But I hugged
and kissed my dad at every chance - nothing could have felt more natural.
He was a curious man who was always trying new things. He was the first person in Allentown
to buy a motorcycle. Unfortunately, my father and his motorcycle didn't get along too well. He f
ell off it so often that he got rid of it just a month after buying it. As a result, he never again
trusted any vehicle(车辆) with less than four wheels.
Because of that motorcycle, I wasn't allowed to have a bicycle when I was growing up.
Whenever I wanted to ride a bike, I had to borrow one from a friend. On the other hand, my
father let me drive a car as soon as I turned sixteen.
    1. When I won a contest at school, my father would _____.

    C. He was always proud of my success in everything.
    D. He was very open with his feelings and his love.
    3. My father trusted no vehicle with less than four wheels because _____.
    A. he did not like the way I borrowed bicycles from friends
    B. he thought that cars were faster than motorcycles

Many people all over the world speak English as their second language and it is not too much
to say that it has become an international language.
Studying English can make life fun. It enables you to watch American movies, read English
books and listen to English songs. Moreover, as English is an international language, you will be
able to communicate with foreigners when you are on a trip abroad. Traveling will be more
    interesting that way.
It is a good idea to make friends with foreigners. In my opinion, it is the best way to improve
your English. In addition, it will bring you a lot of fun and expand your view of the world.  If you
make friends with a native speaker, you can practise your spoken English more often, and then
you can communicate with people around the world. You can also become familiar with the
customs and habits of different cultures.
There are some people who are afraid to make friends with foreigners, because they are not
confident about their English. However, many foreigners do not care about grammar. They will
get your key words in the sentence and know the whole meaning. Therefore, it is unnecessary to
    be afraid; just go ahead.
In brief, English is so useful to us that we should all learn it.
1.Why does the writer think it necessary for us to learn English?
    A. Because he uses it as a second language.
    B. Because English has become an international language.
    C. Because you can't make foreign friends if you can't speak English.
    D. Because it will be difficult for you to travel if you can't speak English.
2.Studying English can make fun in the following ways EXCEPT _____ according to the text.
    A. enjoying British or American music
    B. travelling abroad
    C. attending English parties
    D. reading English novels or poems
3.In the writer's opinion, some people dare not make foreign friends because _____.
    A. they are afraid of making grammar mistakes
    B. they become shy when they meet foreigners
    C. they know little English
    D. they seldom speak English with foreigners
    4. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word "expand"?
    A. improve
    B. deepen
    C. enlarge
    D. raise

I just experienced a moment that turned my entire day around. I went to the cafeteria today
to buy my lunch. However, when I entered the line and was ready to take out money, I realized I
forgot to take the purse with me. I dug through different parts of my bag, looking for small
change. After a while, it became clear that, while I found most of the money I had, I was still
short of money to buy my lunch.
I started looking around for people who may nicely lend me a little change. I thought about all
the time we passed people on the street and said that we didn't have anything to share. Would
that happen to me? I was too hungry to worry about it. Someone would help. I looked for one of
my friends in the cafeteria, but it was too early for any of them to take their lunch yet.
A very friendly woman appeared in line in front of me. I asked her if she could spare 12 cents.

buy! I told her that I only needed the sandwich, and offered her the change I  had found.
