People from all over the world like to travel to the US. Millions of people visit each year, and they
spend billions of dollars. Tourism is actually one of the leading industries.
Many people like to visit famous U.S. cities, such as New York City, Washington D. C., Miami,
Chicago, Dallas, New Orleans, Denver, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. Each of those has many
tourist attractions. For example, New York has Broadway plays, and it has also some of the tallest
buildings in the world, such as The Empire State Building and The World Trade Center. The World
Trade Center which was 411 meters high and had 110 storeys with a twin tower used to be an office
building for 1,200 firms. But it was destroyed completely by the two planes of the terrorists on
September 11, 2001. Washington has government buildings as well as monuments and museums.
Dallas has the site of President Kennedy' murder. New Orleans has jazz music and the cities in
California have many ethnic groups with lots of good food. Disneyland in California and Disney
World in Florida are very popular attractions for tourists with children. The space center in Florida
and Texas are popular sites for people at all ages to visit.
Some tourists prefer to find sites with natural beauty in rural settings. The mountains in the East
and the West are very popular with campers, hikers, and climbers. Some come just to ski and stay
in fancy ski resorts like Aspen or Vail. Others come just to golf at nice golf resorts like Pinehwst,
which is partly owned by Japanese who love golf. Some come to watch sports, but tickets can be
expensive. It costs $100 just to get a back row seat to see a Chicago Bulls game. Two of the most
popular places for tourists to visit are Grand Canyon and Yellowstone Park. At times Yellowstone
Park is so crowded with tourists that it almost seems like a city. With the growing popularity at
country music, many people now visit Nashville where most of the recordings are made or Branson
where many stars have their own theatres.
1.Today a tourist visiting New York can not visit ____.
    A. Broadway.
    B. The Empire State Building
    C. The World Trade Center
    D. New York Port
2.If you are interested in politics, the city that you are most likely to visit is ____.
    A. Washington
    B. New York
    C. New Orleans
    D. Chicago
3.The following places are some attractions which have something to do with music except ___.
    A. Nashville
    B. Branson
    C. New Orleans
    D. Dallas
4.Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida are the favorite attractions for the
    children.
B.Texas is the only space center in the U.S..
    C.Japanese are fond of golf.
D.It can be very cold in Aspen and Vail in winter

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of
documents because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written,
stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.
It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected
computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is
introduced, the printers start working overtime. "I feel in my bones this revolution is causing
more trees to be cut down," says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.
Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper
comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new
markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality
documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to
develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard
copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are
nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater
    demand for printers.
Does all this mean environmental concerns have been forgotten? Some activists suggest
people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away.
"I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling," said Kelly
Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful
that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing
in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other
than wood, such as agricultural waste.
1.The growing demand for paper in recent years is largely due to ____.
A.the rapid development of small businesses
    B. the opening up of new markets
    C. the printing of high quality copies
    D. the increased use of the Internet
    2.  Environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation is ____.
A.to encourage printing more quality documents
B.to develop new printers using recycled paper
C.to find new materials for making paper
    D.to plant more fast-growing trees
3.Hewlett-Packard Co. has decided to develop new technologies because ____.
A.people are concerned about the environment
B.printers in many offices are working overtime
C.small companies need more hard copies
D.they see a growing market for printers
4.What would be the best title for the text?
    A.Computers and Printers
    B. E-mail and the Business World
    C. Internet Revolution and Environment

Flying over a desert area in an airplane, two scientists looked down with trained eyes at trees and

ground, "Gold possible, "Walking across hilly ground, four scientists reported, "This ground should

    word:" Uranium
None of the scientists had X-ray eyes: they had no magic powers of looking down below the
earth's surface.  They were merely putting to use one of the newest methods of locating minerals in
the ground, using trees and plants as signs that certain minerals may lie beneath the ground on which
the trees and plants are growing.     This newest method of searching for minerals is based on the
fact that minerals deep in the earth may affect the kind of bushes and trees that grow on the surface.
At Waston Bar Greek, a brook(小溪)six thousand feet high in the mountains of British  Colunbia,
Canada, a mineral search group gathered bags of tree seeds.  Boxes were filled with small branches
from the trees.  Roots were dug and put into boxes.  Each bag and box was carefully marked.  In a
scientific laboratory the parts of the forest trees were burned to ashes and tested.  Each small part
was examined to learn whether there were minerals in it.
Study of the roots, branches, and seeds showed no silver.  But there were small amounts of gold
in the roots and a little less gold in the branches and seeds.  The seeds growing nearest to the tree
trunk had more gold than those growing on the ends of the branches.

A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern
England. This could end the worries of many parents fearful for their children's safety on the roads.
Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living
more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been
decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead,
as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest
    school.
The new plan is to be tried out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School.
The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government have said in the past that they
will not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to offer a sum of
money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school's
    headmaster.
Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. Final calculations
have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should  be less than £
    20 a term.
They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with
the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now
just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with
other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their children, to see
if they would like to take part in the new plan.
    1. What is the aim of the plan?
A.To prevent the students' road accidents.
    B.To relieve the traffic pressure.
C.To save time for the parents and students.
D.To help the parents save money.
2.How can the local government arrange the new bus service at a low cost?
A.By letting the bus run in the morning only.
B.By limiting the number of the students.
C.By obtaining the support from the headmaster.
D.By linking the new bus service with the existing one.
3.Which of the following is possible if the plan is carried out?
A.The bus company will make much more money.
B.The children can choose whatever school they like.
C.The parents can get rid of their worries.
D.The students in Impington School can have free bus rides.
    4.This passage is most probably___________.
    A.a personal letter
    B.an advertisement
    C.a headmaster's report
    D.a newspaper article
