Baths and bathing have long been considered of medical importance to man. In Greece there are the
ruins(废墟) of a water system(系统) for baths built over 3,000 years ago. The Romans had warm public
baths. In some baths, as many 3,000 persons could bathe at the same time.
Treating disease by taking bathing has been popular for centuries. Modern medical bathing first became popular in Europe and by the late 1700's has also become popular in the United States.
For many years frequent(经常的) bathing was believed to be bad for one's health. Ordinary bathing
just to keep clean was avoided(避免), and perfume was often used to cover up body smells!
By the 1700's doctors began to say that soap and water were good for health. They believed that it
was good for people to be clean. Slowly, people began to bathe more frequently. During the Victorian
Age of the late 19th century, taking a bath on Saturday night became common.
In the United States ordinary bathing was slow to become popular. During the 18th and early 19th
centuries, many Americans were known as "The Great Unwashed!" In one American city, for example, a
person was only allowed to take a bathe every thirty days! That was a law!
Frequency of bathing today is partly a matter of habit. People know that bathing for cleanliness is
important to health. Doctors know that dirty bodies increase the chance of diseases. As a result, in the
United States, people generally bathe often. Some people bath once a day at least. They consider a daily
bath essential (=necessary) to good health.

Arthur Miller (1915-2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists(剧作家) of the
20th century. Miller`s father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary, drawn like so many others by
the "Great American Dream". However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early l930s.
Millers' s most famous play, Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence(执着) on money and social status(身份) as indicators(指数) of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into trouble with his
worth. Willy is "burnt out" and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment: if he can't do
the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully
aware of this, and at loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has
failed and kills himself in the end.
When it was first staged in 1949, the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony
Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics` Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It
was the first play to win all three of these major awards.
Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, on the evening of February 10, 2005,
the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.

When first entered, Vanak Restaurant does not look like much of a restaurant, but once the pleasant
smells of kabob(烤肉串)hit the senses, you are incapable(不能) of calling it anything less.
Owned by a local couple, this Persian restaurant has an inviting, homelike atmosphere that many
    restaurants lack.
The space is small with only a few dining tables and nearly no decoration, but the environment is truly
    charming.
Lying in a hardly noticeable street corner, the restaurant still attracts all customers, especially those

A common sight is that of old Persian men sitting in the corner talking loudly about world topics,
watching news events on TV, drinking a black tea known as Persian chai, and reading local Persian
newspapers all the while trying to finish off their plates piled with food.
The variety of food at the restaurant is limited, but the amount of each dish is fairly large. Most of the
meals can serve two people and are under $10, so not only is it affordable but practical as well.

served with either rice or bread. Another great kabob is the Cbelo Kabob, kabob consisting of grilled

    Attitudes to AIDS Now
Most people say that the USA is making progress in fighting AIDS, but they don't know there's no cure and strongly disagree that "the AIDS epidemic(流行病)is over," a new survey finds.
The findings, released Thursday by the Kaiser Family Foundation, reassure activists who have worried
that public concern about AIDS might disappear in light of recent news about advances in treatment and
    declines in deaths.
"While people are very optimistic about the advances, they're still realistic about the fact that there is no cure" says Sophia Chang, director of HIV programs at the foundation.
The Kaiser survey, like a recent USA TODAY Gallup Poll, does find that the number of people
ranking AIDS as the country's top health problem has fallen. In the Kaiser Poll, 38% say it's the top
concern, down from 44% in a 1996 poll; in the Gallup Poll, 29% say AIDS in No.1, down from 41% in
    1992 and 67% in 1987.
Other findings from Kaiser, which polled more than 1,200 adults in September and October and asked additional questions of another 1,000 adults in November:
52% say the country is making progress against AIDS, up from 32% in 1995.
52% say the government spends too little on AIDS.
86% correctly say AIDS drugs can now lengthen lives; an equal number correctly say that the drugs are not cures.
67% incorrectly say that AIDS deaths increased or stayed the same in the past year; 24% know deaths fell.
Daniel Zingale, director of AIDS Action Council, says, "I'm encouraged that the American people are
getting the message that the AIDS epidemic isn't over. I hope the decision-makers in Washington are
getting the same message… We have seen signs of complacency(自鸣得意).
    1. According to the Kaiser Poll, which of the following is NOT correct?

    B. AIDS drugs still cannot save people's lives.
    C. AIDS drugs can now make people live longer.
