No one has enough, but everyone has all there is. We each have just twenty-four hours in a day. Time
is not our problems , but what we do with the limited time we have is the issue. Many people spend their
days on dozens of activities , but achieve very little because they aren't concentrating on right things. The
Pareto Principle, also known as the 80:20 Rule shows us that typically eighty per cent of unfocused effort
generates only twenty percent of the results. The remaining eighty per cent of the results are achieved
with only twenty percent of the effort . To effectively manage your time, you need to change where you
are spending your time. We all have the same amount of time every day. How you spend your time is
how you spend your life. Here are time management strategies, which may be helpful.
         Learn to say no
Politely say no should become a habit. Saying no frees up time for the things that are most important.
         Make a "to-do" list
List the tasks that need to be done in order of their importance. Save other less important things for
    when you have time.
    Minimize interruption
Plan ahead. Think through projects. Look for ways to "block" interruptions. For example, close your
door, don't answer the phone or work in a different space.
    Combine several activities
Try to do several activities at one time. While going to school, listen to taped notes. This allows up to an
hour or two a day of good study review. While showering, make a mental list of the things. Above all,be
creative, and let it work for you.

    1. According to the Pareto Principle, we can know that_________.

    A. people can't achieve a lot even though they concentrate on right things
    B. people should focus more effort on right and important things and finish them first
    C. people are certain to succeed if they spend twenty per cent of their time
    D. eighty per cent of effort spent on one matter is useless

    2. According to the passage, if you want to do several things on Sunday, you should __________.

    A. do them while listening to the music
    B. do all of them at one time
    C. do the most important one first
    D. put some of them off till next Monday

    3.The underlined word"block"in the passage means"___________ ".

    A. accept
    B. prevent
    C. arrange
    D. defend

4.What would be the best title of the passage?

    A. Time Management
    B. The Pareto Principle
    C. How to Make a "To-do" List
    D. Time and Habits

                                                    Obama still smokes in secret
US President Barack Obama may have just made life more difficult for cigarette smokers, but he still
smokes every now and then in secret.
Obama, who has publicly struggled to quit smoking, said he still hasn't completely kicked the habit
even after signing a law this week that will set tough new rules for the tobacco industry.
"As a former smoker I constantly struggle with it. Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes?  Yes. Am I
a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No," Obama said at a news conference.
"I don't do it in front of my kids, I don't do it in front of my family. I would say that I am 95 percent
cured, but there are times where I mess up," he said.
The new law gives the US Food and Drug Administration the power to strictly limit the making and
    marketing of tobacco products.
At a White House signing ceremony Monday, Obama said he was among the nearly 90 percent of
smokers who took up the habit before their 18th birthday.
"Once you go down this path it's something you continually struggle with, which is exactly why the
law we signed is so important because what we don't want is kids going down that path in the first
place," he said at the news conference.

Paul, the oracle octopus (神算章鱼), was given a replica (复制品) of the World Cup as a reward
for his perfect eight-for-eight record in predicting the results of matches.
The two-year-old octopus with possible supernatural powers turned into a worldwide celebrity for
accurately predicting the German team's five World Cup wins as well as their two defeats. Paul also
tipped Spain to beat Netherlands in the final.
"We have had a lot of offers for Paul but he will definitely be staying with us and returning to his usual
job-making children smile," Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig in Oberhausen said after presenting
Pual with the World Cup replica.
There's no rational(合理的)reasons why Paul always got it right. Bettors around the world made
small fortunes based on Paul's guess, said Graham Sharpe, media relations director at William Hill in
London. "I've seen a lot of things in my lifetime but this is the first time I've ever seen people making their
picks based on what an octopus tells them. We had people coming in saying they didn't know how to
place a bet but heard about this German octopus and wanted to bet with him. It's funny. But he kept
    getting it right." said Sharpe.
Sharpe said that anyone who had placed a 10-pound accumulator bet(累计下注)on Paul's prediction
from the start of the World Cup would have won 3,000 pounds($4,500)by the end of the tournament.
Paul's home at Sea Life aquarium(水族馆)in Oberhausen has been crowded with visitors and media
from across Europe. Many networks broadcast his predicting live. Many networks broadcast his picks
live. Hundreds were on hand to watch the World Cup replica lowered into his tank on Monday, 12 July,
    2010.

    1. If a fan had placed a 200-pound accumulator bet on Paul's prediction, he would have won________
        during the tournament.

    A. $30,000
    B. $45,000
    C. $60,000
    D. $90,000

2.The underlined word "tipped" in the 2nd paragraph probably means_____.

    A. ordered
    B. announced
    C. predicted
    D. helped

    3. From what Sharpe said we can learn that________.

    A. it's amazing for Paul to make more exact prediction than people
    B. octopus like Paul may all have the ability to predict exactly
    C. it's common for people to believe in sea life for prediction
    D. we'd better not bet with animals when we have trouble making our picks

    4. We can learn from this passage that_________.

    A. Paul used to be children's favorite sea life

A group of graduates, successful in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor.
Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.
Before offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of
coffee and a variety of cups-porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking and cheap, some
exquisite and expensive-telling them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice
looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for
you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured
that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some
cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you
consciously went for the best cups. . And then you began eyeing each other's cups.
Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They
are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the
quality of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God
    has provided us. "
God brews the coffee, not the cups. Enjoy your coffee!
"The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything. "
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

    1. Why did the professor offer his students coffee with varieties of cups?

    A. To give his students many more choices.
    B. To teach his students how to enjoy coffee.
    C. To show the students his collection of cups.
    D. To tell his students the right attitude to life

    2. According to the professor, the happiest people are the ones who _____.

    A. get the best type of coffee cups
    B. make the best of what they have
    C. have a wide range of coffee cups
    D. care about social status and wealth

    3. The best title for the passage would be _____.

    A. God's Coffee
    B. The Pressure of Life
    C. The Happiest People
    D. Professor's Coffee Cups
