When I was younger, I wished for a Porsche and a big house. That was my idea of success. I took all the advanced classes possible and took the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew
that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford that car and the dream house. All the way
through junior year, my mind was planning this beautiful future.
Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends died at the age of
    16. Soon after, my great-grandmother passed away, and on the same day, my beloved fourth-grade
teacher. They left me not knowing what to do or where to go. Death had never touched me so closely.
After a long period of emptiness, it finally struck me; life is not promised and neither is my future
success. While I was going through the actions in an attempt to achieve material success, I was not
enjoying my daily life. I was just existing. It occurred to me that life has more purposes than acquiring
possessions, which will only be yours until you can no longer keep up with the payments. I realized that
finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with you forever and that is real success.
Enjoying life's precious changes makes a person more successful than a wealthy person who is not
content and takes everything for granted. The summer before senior year, my attitude changed greatly.
Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning information. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on
today and the blessings and successes that come with it.
I still make excellent grades, but now I dedicate weeks to studying instead of preparing for exams,
and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. Success, just like beauty, is in the eye of the
beholder(旁观者). For me, being successful means truly living life each day, being thankful, and affecting
    the world.

1.The main idea of the first paragraph is ____________.

    A. the writer drew a beautiful picture for his future
    B. the writer was an intelligent student at school
    C. the writer was mad for success
    D. the writer devoted himself to material success

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A..People can truly enjoy daily life by trying to achieve material success.
B.Success can only be measured with a Porsche and a big house.
C.People should concentrate on today and success will follow afterwards.
D.The pursuit of inner peace, purpose and happiness is a real success.

    3.  The purpose of the writer is probably to ____________.

A..advise us to have a correct attitude towards success
B.inspire us to lead an active life each day
C.remind us to set a goal for our life
D.persuade us to work hard to achieve our success

Several years ago, I had a huge falling out with one of my best friends. So huge, in fact, that now I
    can't even remember what happened.
In the past nine years, I've seen her twice, and each time we've been polite but distant. And that
troubles me because we were once close friends. I'd like nothing more than to go back nine years, and
continue our friendship. But how? How do you reconnect with friends you've lost throughout the years?
         Linking to your past
The desire to reconnect with lost friends isn't unusual. Why? Because friends link us to the past.
"Friends from years ago are custodians(监护人)of our past," says Sandy Sheehy, author of Connecting: The Enduring Power of Female Friendship.
Although you can share information about your past with friends you've met recently, you don't have
a shared history with them. So you wind up only telling them about your past, rather than sharing it with
    them.
But many people never try to reconnect. Women especially have trouble taking that first step. Shynes
s or fear that the other person doesn't want to reconnect often stops many women. And that shouldn't
be. Your friends probably want to be in touch with you as much as you want to be in touch with them.
         Searching for friends
Fortunately, finding lost friends isn't as difficult as it once was, thanks to tools like the Internet. Our
experts offer these suggestions for locating contact information:
*Search Internet sites designed to locate people like classmates.com and switchboard.com.
*Contact your high school or college alumni(校友)office to request current address information.
*Surf online yellow pages. Check current phone records from your friend's hometown.
*Network with other friends who might have known your friend.
*Get in touch with any of her relatives, if you know where they live. If you know where she works,
find the company's web site and search the directory of personnel.

    1. What is the subject discussed in the passage?

    A.How to make new friends.
    B.How to rediscover friendships.
    C.How to develop healthy friendships.
D.How to keep in touch with friends.

    2. The underlined sentence "friends from years ago are custodians of our past" means ____________.

A..many years ago old friends kept something for us
B.in the past old friends took care of us
C.old friends are part of our life history
D.old friends know what wrong things we did in the past

    3. According to the passage what makes us reluctant to reconnect old friends?

    A. Lack of money.
    B. Shortage of time.
    C. Regret and shame.
    D. Fear and shyness.

    4. How can we make contact with the lost friends according to the passage?

    A. By asking other friends of the information on your lost friends.
    B. By going direct to the place where he works.
C.By asking the local post office about your friends' new address.
    D. By putting an advertisement in your friends' local town.

Spring, summer, autumn, and winter bring changes in the weather, plant and animal life, and the length
of days and night. Seasonal changes such as these are due to three factors, the tilt (倾斜) of Earth's axis (轴) to one side; the rotation, or turn, of Earth on its axis every 24 hours; and the revolution of Earth
around the sun once every year. Since Earth remains titled in the same direction during its revolution of
the sun, our distance from the sun changes, causing us to experience the changing seasons.
In summer the Northern Hemisphere (半球), where we live, points toward the sun, bringing us closer
to it and its more direct and powerful rays. Six months later, when Earth is halfway through its revolution
around the sun, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, placing us farther from it and
exposing us to the weak rays of winter. The seasons in one hemisphere are opposite those in the other
hemisphere. However, one area of the Earth - the equator (赤道) - is always closest to the sun, so
equatorial regions experience hot weather throughout the year. In contrast, the polar regions, always
farthest from the sun, experience continuous frigid weather.
In the Northern Hemisphere, we observe a gradual alteration in the angle of the sun during the year.
About June 21, on the summer solstice, or the first day of summer, the midday sun reaches its highest
point in the sky and produces the year's maximum daylight hours. About September 22, on the autumn
equinox, the midday sun is lower in the sky. Because Earth's axis is titled neither toward nor away from
the sun, equal periods of daylight and darkness result. About December 21, on the winter solstice, or the
first day of winter, the midday sun is at its lowest point in the sky. This brings the year's fewest daylight
hours. About March 21, on the vernal equinox, or the first day of spring, the midday sun is higher in the
sky. Daytime and nighttime hours are again equal.

    1. This passage is mainly concerned with ____________.

    A. how Earth rotates on its axis
    B. why the various seasons occur
    C. why each season is three months long
    D. which parts of Earth are coldest

    2. What happens on the summer solstice?

    A. The midday sun reaches its lowest point in the sky.
    B. Earth's axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun.
    C. There are equal periods of daylight and darkness.
    D. The midday sun produces the greatest number of daylight hours during the year.

    3. In the last paragraph, the writer presents facts about equinoxes and solstices to explain _________.

      A. why it is hot at the equator
      B. the various lengths of day and night
      C. why the midday sun is directly overhead
      D. the date of the autumn equinox

    4. In this passage, the underlined word "revolution" in the first paragraph means ____________.

    A. a great change
    B. an uprising
    C. standing still
    D. circling

A newly-married Sweden couple on a four-month honeymoon were hit by a series of natural
disasters, such as the Australian floods, Christchurch earthquake and Japanese tsunami.
Stefan and Erika Svanstrom left Stockholm, Sweden, on December 6 and were immediately
trapped in Munich, Germany, due to one of Europe's worst snowstorms. Traveling with their baby
daughter, they flew on to Cairns in Australia which was then struck by one of the most fierce
cyclones(龙卷风) in the nation's history. From there, the couple were forced to shelter for 24 hours
on the cold floor of a shopping centre with 2500 others.
"Trees were being knocked over and big branches were scattered across the streets," Mr
Svanstrom told Sweden's Expressen newspaper. "We escaped by the skin of our teeth. It was so
    close an encounter with death."
They then headed south to Brisbane but the city was experiencing massive flooding, so they
crossed the country to Perth where they narrowly escaped raging bush fires. The couple then flew
to Christchurch, New Zealand, arriving just after a massive magnitude(震级) 6.3 earthquake
destroyed the city on February 22.
Mrs Svanstrom said, "When we got there the whole town was a war zone."
"We could not visit the city since it was completely blocked off, so instead we traveled around
    before going to Japan."
But days after the Svanstroms arrived, Tokyo was rocked by Japan's largest earthquake since
records began. "The trembling was horrible and we saw roofs fly off the buildings," Mr Svanstrom
said. "It was like the buildings were shaking back and forth."
The family returned to Stockholm on March 29 after a much calmer visit to their last destination
China. But Mr Svanstrom ---who also survived the destructive tsunami that hit southeast Asia in
2004 ---said the marriage was still going strong. He added, "I know marriages have to endure some
trials (考验), but I think we have been through most of them. We've certainly experienced more than
our fair share of disasters, but the most important thing is that we're together and happy."

    1. How many disasters in total did the couple experience during their honeymoon?

    A.Three.
    B. Four.
    C. Five.
    D. Six.

    2. Which of the following expressions can replace the underlined sentence?

    A.We ran away in fear.
B.We narrowly escaped from the cyclone.
    C.We escaped with others' help.
    D.We ran away fortunately.

    3. What is the real meaning of what Mr Svanstrom said after the honeymoon?

A.He regarded the disasters as the tests in their marriage and would face any difficulty without fear.
B.He felt fortunate that they survived the disasters but dared not travel again in a period of time.
C.He thought they should share the suffering and would provide disaster relief to the affected areas.
D.He believed the horrible experience a sign that they should not be together and they might break up.

    4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A.A Series of Natural Disasters
    B.The Unforgettable Honeymoon From Hell
    C.A Close Look at Disasters
    D.An Indifferent Journey

1   Our ancestors performed body painting during special occasions. However, they did not use
paints like the ones sold in stores today. They used natural paints to do body painting. Today, body
painting is still being practised, and it is very popular in Western countries. However, back in the 1960's,
the social acceptability of this art form was always in question.   2
When body painting, you do not just use any kind of paint.   3   Artists should only use paints that can
be easily washed off with water and ordinary soap. So, now you know something about body painting. If
you want to practise body painting, you can join in certain classes.   4   A friend or even a family member will do, but it is much easier if you practise in a class because you do not have to worry about finding a
    model.
Body painting is a special kind of art that requires years of practice before you can become an expert
in the field.  5  The Internet can provide you with all the resources you need. You simply have to spend
enough time doing research and studying all of the information that you need to know.
Your mind should also be free so that you can create a beautiful work of art. In time, you will be
ready to join in the festival for body painting, where your skills can be recognized by people all over the
    world.

    A. No wonder, body painting is a popular kind of visual art now.
    B. While you are studying it, you have to continue to do research.
    C. For beginners, you should practise body painting with someone that you are comfortable with.
    D. Body painting can transform a person into a spirit, a work of art, or even a map of a place.
    E. Body painting was developed many years ago.
    F. There is one main rule for body painting - the paints should be harmless.
    G. In fact, experts have had endless discussions about it.

    删除:把多余的词用斜线(\)划掉。
    修改:在错的词下划一横线,并在该词下面写出修改后的词。
    注意:

My husband, Mike and I were at a restaurant with his boss. When Mike began a story I was
sure he had told it before, I gave him a kick under the table. There was no response, so I gave him
other one. Still the story went on. All of sudden he stopped, smiled and saying, “Oh, but I’ve
told you this one before, haven’t I?” We all laughed and changed the topic. Later, above the dance
floor, I asked my husband why it has taken him so long to get my messages. “What do you mean?”
he replied. “I stopped the story as soon as you kicked me.” “However I kicked you twice, and it
still took you a while to stop!” Suddenly we realized what had been happened. When we returned to
my table, the boss smiled and said to me, “After the second one, I guessed it was not for me, so I
passed it along and kicked Mike.”
