When traveling in the Canadian Rockies by car, I often notice a road sign that says, "A fed bear is a dead bear." 1 , I did not get it. Why is a fed bear a dead one? According to a friend, many travelers used to throw their food from their cars for the bears. 2 , the bears turned to the roadside for food and slowly lost their ability to take care of themselves. When winter came, fewer travelers took to the mountains, which 3 less food for the bears, some of whom starved or frozen to death. So the Canadian government 4 warning signs along the road, essentially advising people not to feed the bears. This reminded me of a scientific experiment. Some white mice were 5 into two groups. One group spent their days only eating and sleeping, 6 the other, fed only with half the amount of food 7 , had to search for food. Half a year later, scientists found that the mice that had to search for their own food were 8 , while the fully fed ones were either ill or dead. It was 9 that the underfed white mice, in the 10 of searching for their food, had kept healthy by exercising in finding food, being adaptable, and 11 their immunity. Many over-concerned parents are feeding their children like bears or white mice. At present, children are only good at reading and studying, and are not 12 to think independently and act for themselves. 13 placed in strange environments, they are lost, confused, and helpless. Parents do not understand what it takes to 14 their children's long-term success. They forget the most important thing---and that is how to cultivate their children into 15 adults, so that they can bravely undertake challenges and succeed in the future. | ||||

Like distance runners on a measured course, all of us will move through time in a roughly predictable pattern. In the first stage of our lives, we develop and grow, reaching toward the top of physical vitality. After we grow up, however, the body begins a process of gradually wearing out. A new awareness of physical fitness may help lengthen our years of health and vitality, yet nothing we do will work to stop the unavoidable force of aging. Most of the changes of aging take place deep inside the body. The lungs become less able to take in oxygen. Powerful muscles gradually lose their strength. The heart loses power and pumps less blood. Bones grow easier to break. Finally, we meet a stress, a stress that is greater than our physical resistance. Often, it is only a minor accident or chance infection (a disease caused by virus), but this time, it brings life to an end. In 1932, a classic experiment nearly doubled the lifetime of rats, simply by cutting back the calories in their diet. The reason for the effect was then unknown. Today, at the University of California at Berkley, Dr. Paul Seagle has also greatly lengthened the normal lifetime of rats. The result was achieved through a special protein limited diet, which had a great effect on the chemistry of the brain. Seagle showed that within the brain, specific chemicals control many of the signals that influence aging. By changing that chemical balance, the clock of aging can be reset. For the first time, the mystery of why we age is being seriously challenged. Scientists in many fields are now making striking and far-reaching discoveries. An average lifetime lasts 75 years, yet in each of us lies a potential for a longer life. If we could keep the vitality and resistance to disease that we have at age twenty, we would live for 800 years. 1. What does the underlined word "it" refer to? A. Physical vitality. B. Stress. C. Aging. D. Physical resistance. 2. Which of the following is not a change of aging? A. The lungs become unable to take in oxygen. B. People gradually lose their muscle strength. C. The heart loses power and pumps less blood. D. Bones tend to break more easily. 3. The author believes the following except that ________. A. human's life pattern is predictable B. physical fitness can't stop the force of aging C. human's lifetime will last longer than 75 years D. all of the changes of aging take place deep inside the body 4. How did Dr. Paul Seagle lengthen the lifetime of rats in his experiment? A. By limiting the protein in their diet. B. By cutting the calories in their diet. C. By resetting their clock of aging. D. By keeping their physical fitness. 5. What is probably the best title for the article? A. Two Great Experiments B. The Mystery of Human Life C. Ways to lengthen Human Life D. The Breakthrough in the Study of Aging |

Psychologists agree that I.Q. contributes only about 20 percent of the factors that determine success. A full 80 percent comes from other factors, including what I call emotional intelligence. Following are two of the major qualities that make up emotional intelligence, and how they can be developed. 1.Self-awareness. The ability to recognize a feeling as it happens is the keystone of emotional intelligence. People with greater certainty about their emotions are better pilots of their lives. Developing self-awareness requires tuning in to what neurologist Antonio Damasio calls "gut feelings". Gut feelings can occur without a person being consciously aware of them. For example, when people who fear snakes are shown a picture of a snake, sensors on their skin will detect sweat, a sign of anxiety, even though the people say they do not feel fear. The sweat shows up even when a picture is presented so rapidly that the subject has no conscious awareness of seeing it. Through deliberate effort we can become more aware of our gut feelings. Take someone who is annoyed by a rude encounter for hours after it occurred. He may be unaware of his irritability(易怒)and surprised when someone calls attention to it. But if he evaluates his feelings, he can change them. Emotional self-awareness is the building block of the next fundamental of emotional intelligence: being able to shake off a bad mood. 2.Mood Management. Bad as well as good moods spice life and build character. The key is balance. We often have little control over when we are swept by emotion. But we can have some say in how long that emotion will last. Psychologist Dianne Tice asked more than 400 men and women about their strategies for escaping foul moods. Her research, along with that of other psychologists, provides valuable information on how to change a bad mood. Of all the moods that people want to escape, rage seems to be the hardest to deal with. When someone in another car cuts you off on a highway, your instant response may be, That jerk! He could have hit me! I can let him get away with that! The more you stew, the angrier you get. Such is the stuff of hypertension and reckless driving. What should you do to relieve rage? One myth is that ventilating will make you feel better. In fact, researchers have found that's one of the worst strategies. A more effective technique is 'reframing", which means consciously seeing a situation in a more positive light. In the case of the driver who cuts you off, you might tell yourself: Maybe he had some emergency. This is one of the most potent ways, Tice found, to put anger to rest. Going off alone to cool down is also an effective way to refuse anger, especially if you can't think clearly. Tice found that a large proportion of men cool down by going for a drive----- a finding that inspired her to drive more defensively. A safer alternative is exercise, such as taking a long walk. Whatever you do, don't waste the time pursuing your train of angry thoughts. You aim should be to distract yourself. The techniques of reframing and distraction can alleviate depression and anxiety as well as anger. Add to them such relaxation techniques as deep breathing and meditation(冥想) and you have powerful weapons against bad moods. 1. According to the author, the importance of knowing one's gut feelings is that __________. A. one can develop them. B. one can call other's attention to them. C. one may get rid of them. D. one may control them. 2. The word "spice" in paragraph five is closest in meaning to _________. A. add interest to B. lengthen C. make dull D. bring into existence 3. On mood control, the author seems to suggest that we _________ . A. can control our mood B. are often unaware of what mood we are in. C. can determine how long our mood could last D. lack strategies for controlling moods 4. "Reframing" is essentially about __________. A. forgetting the unpleasant situation B. adopting a positive attitude C. protecting oneself properly D. avoiding road accidents 5. What is the best title for the passage? A. What is emotional intelligence? B. How to develop emotional intelligence C. Strategies for getting rid of foul moods D. How to control one's gut feelings |
Tranquility, relaxation and the scent of incense (香烛香味), this is Guozijian Street, a street combining Beijing's past and present. Housing the Confucian Temple in the east and the Imperial College in the west, the street gradually took shape some 700 years ago. Guozijian Street connects to the Lama Temple in the east. There are many sandalwood incense shops at the street entrance. The air is full of scent. Yet gradually, the scent of ancient books takes advantage as one explores further down the street and towards the Confucian Temple and Imperial College. The Confucian Temple is where the worships to Confucius were attended during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties (1271-1911). Gnarled cypress trees outside the gate create thick shade from the sun. On each side of the gate stands a huge stone pole written in Mandarin and Mongolian ordering all horse riders, even the emperor, to get off their horses. The glazed yellow tiles on the roof show the temple's past dignity. Beside the Confucian Temple is the Imperial College, the highest educational institution during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, which was once the dream destination for ancient scholars. The neighboring Guanshuyuan Hutong is no different than other Beijing hutongs, except for its unique colors. The royal red of the Imperial College wall is a stark contrast with the typical grey of common people's residences. Serenity is very common over Guozijian Street. The occasional noise aroused by visitors is quickly absorbed by the quiet atmosphere. Even time slows down on this ancient street. The leafy and green cypress trees along the street protect it from the bother of the busy city. These tall and silent plants add to the dignity and elegance of the street. Living houses still preserve the ancient and attractive style of old Beijing, which is hardly seen elsewhere nowadays. Looking through the red gate where the paint has already started to come off, one may find some older people sitting leisurely in the sun in the courtyards. It seems that living next door to the sage (圣人) has brought them the wisdom to dismiss all kinds of worries. 1. The 2nd paragraph mainly talks about _______. A. the Lama Temple B. the Confucian Temple C. a sight of a street D. a street of incense 2. The underlined word "serenity" in the 3rd paragraph roughly means _______. A. being calm and peaceful B. being silent C. being still but noisy D. being full of noise 3. It can be inferred from the 4th paragraph that Guozijian Street is _______ . A. busy B. relaxing C. natural D. noisy 4. The air in Guozijian is fragrant because _______ . A. the shops give off a smell B. incenses in the shop and ancient books give off lots of scent C. there are many sandalwood trees there D. there is the Confucian Temple 5. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. The two huge marble poles were carved in two languages. B. Guozijian Street is the same in colors as other Beijing hutongs. C. Ancient scholars studied in the Confucian Temple and the Imperial College. D. Ancient emperors ought to get off their horses at the gate of Guozijian Street |

How can you stay so calm and still?” The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule my attention. Whatever I do, I get involved in it.
