Wang Lu, 24, one of many students studying abroad who’ll come home for work, majors in business & management studies at Edinburgh’s Napier University. She had planned what to do after graduation in the UK: two years’ work experience at a restaurant and a tour around Europe. But now her plans are up in
    the air.
Following the UK Home Secretary’s meeting on reform of the student immigration system, the UK
government recently announced the end of the post-study work visa from April 2012. This will force tens
of thousands of Chinese students to leave the UK after graduation.
Sadly, the domestic(国内的)job market doesn’t welcome them with open arms. A report by
Tigtag.com at the end of 2011 showed that over 35 percent of students admitted that they have
    employment problems.
"Returning students often have fluent English, creative minds and a serious attitude toward work,"said
Zhang Tingwen, an HR expert in ChinaHR.com. “But lack of work experience is a big problem.” Xia Lei, an HR manager, responded to Zhang. “We need people who can work for us. We don’t need people
from big name universities to attract customers”.
Difference in work practices is another problem that worries employers, Zhang pointed out. “Some
returning students might be used to Western ways of dealing with people and things.”
Huang Shanshan, 25, got a job in a communication company in Shenzhen.“I once worked part-time in UK. My colleagues ate snacks when they felt hungry, even during working time or in meetings.” Huang
brought some cakes to the office and ate them. When her manager saw that, he told her not to eat at
workplace. “It took me some time to adjust to company rules in China,” said Huang.
    1. Why is Wang Lu forced to leave the UK after graduation?
    A. Because post-study work visa will come to an end.
    B. Because she has no effective ways to learn English.
    C. Because there are no majors that suit her in Britain.
    D. Because different work practices worry employers.
    2. From Xia Lei, we can learn that _______.
    A. the domestic job market gives welcome to returnees with open arms
    B. employers prefer people who can work to those from top universities
    C. returnees are used to Western ways to deal with people and things around
    D. it is hard for returning students with creative minds to take work seriously
    3. It can be inferred from the text that _______.
    A. the reform of immigration system has great effects on the British people
    B. some practices like eating snacks are allowed at the workplace in China
    C. lack of work experience is a big problem to find a suitable job in the UK
    D. returning students are expected to adapt to the new working environment
    4. Where can we most probably read this text?
    A. In a science fiction.
    B. In a travel magazine.
    C. In a newspaper.
    D. In a student’s book.

It’s believed that a bad job is worse than no job at all. I’m not convinced, but here’s the argument anyway. Researchers at the Australian National University in Canberra compared the mental health of more
than 7,000 working age Australians. They found that those with jobs had an average score of 75 in a test
of mental well-being. Jobless people averaged 68.5. If you remained unemployed a long term it lowered
your mental health score by 1.1 points. But getting a poor quality job lowered your score ever further-by 5.6 points.
The results suggest that having a bad job may be worse for your mental health than having no job at all.
    So what is a bad job? According to the study it’s one where you have little control over decision-making;
the job makes heavy demands on you; there’s no job security; and you feel underpaid.
My advice would be that if a reasonable offer of employment comes along, seize it. If you discover that you don’t like the work, that’s OK. You’ve given it your best shot and discovered that this type of work
    isn’t for you.
In my own case my first job was as a trainee social worker. I very quickly learned that I was too
young, too inexperienced and innocent to become a social worker. I cut my losses and tried something
else. I worked as an economic researcher - and was miserable.
These experiences taught me that I was a person. But from my short time as a trainee social worker I
had discovered an ability for interviewing people and writing reports. That led finally to journalism. So take up that first job offer and find out about the world of work. If you realize the job isn’t what you expected,
that’s OK. Look around for something else.
So I disagree that a bad job is worse than no work at all. Remember, it’s always easier to find a job if you are already in work.
    1. From the writer’s experience, we could learn that _______.
    A. a poor quality job in hand is worse than no jobs at all
    B. long-term unemployment got him a mental score of 75
    C. you will find another more easily if you stick to a job
    D. if a bad job offer comes to you, give it up immediately
    2. Which of the following is TRUE when you get a bad job?
    A. There is little possibility to decide for your own.
    B. You can work securely if you are much devoted.
    C. You get paid more than expected but you feel tired.
    D. Having a bad job contributes to the mental health.
    3. Which of the following best describes the organization of the text?
     A. Cause and effect.
    B. Time and space order.
    C. Specific and general.
    D. Statement and example.
    4. What could be the best title of the text?
    A. Hang on to that bad job for now
    B. A bad job lowers mental score
    C. A miserable economic researcher
    D. Good jobs make heavy demands

Being lonely in the crowd might seem ridiculous. But according to a recent survey, the situation is all too common. Loneliness and other anxiety problems - worrying about life’s pressures - can even lead to self-murder.
An article in China Daily gave no reason for this other than the usual blaming of the post-80s generation. According to a high level official, young people suffering from discouragement are mostly “spoiled(溺爱)and have not been taught to be independent, responsible and express ‘thank-you’.” Well, how do you like that? First, I don’t think China’s youth are exactly spoiled. They certainly have more things than their parents did, but a lot of the money spent on them is for their education including various extra classes.
Discouragement and anxiety are now the fastest growing challenges in modern societies. We sense a lack of close friends who can talk to honestly and openly. In 1985, a US study found that one in ten people did not have such a friend. In 2006, it was one in four. It’s easy to see the connection between loneliness and discouragement. But what actually causes this increasing loneliness?
Surely, with Internet social networking sites such as Kaixin, we have more friends than ever. A new study has shown that the more time teenagers spend in front of computers, the less close they are to friends and family. Kaixin or QQ may be fun but it lacks meaning, compared to personal connections in the real world.
And then there are those endless online games popular with young Chinese but increasingly there are more interesting choices. For example, new sports such as skateboarding are starting to catch on in bigger cities, as is playing music in a band. These creative hobbies are done in a group and thus friendship can be stronger. Hopefully young people will also be drawn out of the Internet cafes and interactive computer games that in fact fail to recreate a real and interactive experience.
    1. According to the high level official, it is easy for teenagers lacking independence and responsibility to
        _______.
    A. suffer from loneliness and anxiety
    B. play endless online games
    C. cause adoption of self-destruction
    D. worry about life’s pressures
    2. What does the writer think of the Internet social networking site Kaixin?
    A. Open but ridiculous.
    B. Funny but meaningless.
    C. Real and interesting.
    D. Honest and responsible.
    3. It can be inferred in Paragraph 3 that _______.
    A. young people have no idea of expressing appreciation because of being spoiled
    B. parents focus mostly on children’s education rather than the personality building
    C. there is a tendency that it’s harder to find close friends to have an honest chat with
    D. teenagers will recreate a real and interactive experience to strengthen friendship
    4. According to the text, which of the following can help us avoid being lonely in the crowd?
    A. To stay long in Internet cafes.
    B. To play music in a band.
    C. To abandon our own hobbies.
    D. To focus on extra courses.

More and more Chinese mainland buyers have in the past few weeks been queuing to cross the border into Hong Kong to lessen growing financial pressure led by rising food prices at home. Their shopping
baskets are full of sugar, salt and even tissue paper.
While prices are rising so fast, many people are worrying out ways to cut down their expenses. Du Z
henqi, an 80-year-old Beijinger, grows different vegetables in the community yard. But this year, before they turned ripe, they were all picked by his neighbors. “The prices of vegetables have gone up dramatically,” said Du. “So I understand those people and it pleased me to offer them my help.” Du expressed his
sympathy for these who took away his vegetables without permission.
The rise of food price in China has made people with low incomes feel serious financial pressure and
    forced them to spend wisely.
A collection of practical money-saving tips is thus becoming increasingly popular among Chinese
citizens. If you search “money-saving strategies” in Baidu, you will find 4.27 million entries in 0.19 seconds. The collection provides tips such as choosing local and seasonal products, avoiding buying vegetables on
rainy or snowy days when higher transport costs increase prices, using websites for purchases, and
planting vegetables on the balcony. Some consider buying in large quantity to stay within a tight budget.
Fei Yuqin, who lives in Shanghai, frequently hurries to a farmers’ market before 6 a.m. to buy large
amounts of vegetables for her family and neighbors. “Instead of buying small amounts, I buy large amounts of vegetables at the market and get a 50-percent discount.”
With these tips, many people have become experts in cutting household expenses. However, financial
pressure caused by the current round of price rising still troubles many Chinese people.
    1. The underlined word “lessen” in Paragraph 1 probably means "_______".
    A. indicate
    B. increase
    C. remove
    D. reduce
    2. Paragraph 2 functions as _______ in the text.
    A. an introduction
    B. a conclusion
    C. an example
    D. a hook
    3. Fei Yuqin’s story tells us that to save money buyers can _______.
    A. buy products in large quantity
    B. avoid buying vegetables in bad weather
    C. choose local seasonal goods
    D. plant vegetables in the community yard
    4. Which of the following is TRUE?
    A. More mainland Chinese travel to Hong Kong to avoid the financial pressure.
    B. Du Zhenqi is so angry with those picking his vegetables without permission.
    C. People stay within a tight budget due to their ignorance to money-saving tips.
    D. Many Chinese are still in trouble with the current dramatically rising prices.
    5. The text is mainly about _______.
    A. a pleasant journey for mainland Chinese to Hong Kong
    B. practical strategies in cutting the household expenses
    C. some popular tips on using websites for purchases
    D. solutions to the problems happening in neighborhood

What can you do to make sure your car isn’t stolen?
Well, first and most obviously, lock the car when you leave it. That includes locking the boot for
luggage and closing all the windows. Even a tiny break allows a thief to insert a wire to force open the lock button. Of course, don’t leave the keys hanging in the ignition(点火器). And don’t hide a spare key
inside or outside the car - thieves know all the hiding places. If your car breaks down, lock up before you go for help. Even if you can’t start the car, a thief may be able to.
Now since chances of losing cars are greater from dusk to mid-night, make sure you park in a
well-lighted area, preferably where there are plenty of passers-by, say, near a busy store or a restaurant.
Avoid leaving your keys with a garage or parking-lot assistant: choose the place you park yourself.
Keep your driver’s license in your wallet or purse, not in the separate divisions of your car. You should also have a record of your car’s vital statistics both in your wallet and somewhere at home. This can help with recovery in case of stealing.
And finally, it’s a good idea to fix some kind of safety devices. There is a range available from alarm
systems that set off a siren(警报)if an attempt is made to interfere with the car in any way, to fuel
shut-off systems and time delay ignition systems. Displaying a warning sign will also help discourage
would-be thieves. They don’t want to waste time on trying to steal a protected car.
So, help yourself put car thieves out of business by always locking your car, fixing anti-stealing systems and co-operating with the police by reporting any attempt at stealing.
