People who show confidence really seem to have it made. They seize more rewarding careers, keep
good relationships, and just seem to do everything with more style than the rest of us.
So what's their self-confidence's secret? There isn't one. Self-confidence is a skill and habit that anyone can learn to develop. And although people who are raised in an encouraging environment with confident
role models have a head start in self-confidence development, we all can learn to become more confident
    at any age.
Try these simple tips for practicing and increasing your confidence levels:
Dare to fail. Anybody who's out there bravely performing is going to fail repeatedly. If you're not failing, you're not trying. So don't take failure too hard or too personally. Just learn to roll with it and use its
    lessons to keep improving.
When in doubt, pretend you know what your are doing. Because if you are confident of your abilities,
by the time you have done it, you will be experienced.
Dress for success. You don't have to be beautiful to be confident. Make the most of your own unique
physical characters and weaken your disadvantages so that you know you're giving out your best image.
Listen to be yourself. You're the only person who knows what's right for you. Don't put others'
opinions above your own inner voice.
Build a confident vocabulary. Stop putting yourself down and give up continually blaming your tiny
weaknesses. Learn to show up your strong points and the world will learn to see and celebrate them with
    you.
Pass on praise. Praise others for their virtues and strength. This practice will not decrease your
    confidence, but help increase it.
    1. The passage is written mainly __________.

After Mom died, I began visiting Dad every morning before I went to work. He was frail and moved
slowly, but he always had a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice on the kitchen table for me, along with
an unsigned note reading, "Drink your juice." Such a gesture, I knew, was as far as Dad had ever been
able to go in expressing his love. In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned Mom "Why doesn't Dad
love me!" Mom frowned. "Who said he doesn't love you!" "Well, he never tells me," I complained. "He
never tells me either," she said, smiling. "But look how hard he works to take care of us, to buy us food
and clothes, and to pay for this house. That's how your father tells us he loves us."
I nodded slowly. I understood in my head, but not in my heart. I still wanted my father to put his arms
around me and tell me he loved me. Dad owned and operated a small scrap(片)metal business and after
school I often hung around while he worked. I always hoped he'd ask me to help and then praise me for
what I did. He never asked. His tasks were too dangerous for a young boy to attempt, and Mom was
already worried enough that he'd hurt himself. Dad hand fed scrap steel into a device that chopped it as
cleanly as a butcher chops a rack of ribs. The machine looked like a giant pair of scissors, with blades
thicker than my father's body. If he didn't feed those terrifying blades just right, he risked serious injury.
"Why don't you hire someone to do that for you?" Mom asked Dad one night as she bent over him and
rubbed his aching shoulders with a strong smelling liniment. "Why don't you hire a cook?" Dad asked,
giving her one of his rare smiles.
Many years later, during my first daily visit, after drinking the juice my father had squeezed for me, I
walked over, hugged him and said, "I love you, Dad." From then on I did this every morning. My father
never told me how he felt about my hugs, and there was never any expression on his face when I gave
    them.
    1. What would be the best title for the passage?

    B. My father never loved me

    A. that was the author's favorite
    B. he was sure the author would be thirsty
    C. the author was always complaining
    D. that was a gesture of love
    3. When the author complained in the first paragraph, his mother __________.
    A. tried to comfort him
    B. told him that his father loved him with action
    C. tried to defend his father
    D. got a bit angry with him
    4. The author's father didn't hire a helper because __________.
    A. his job was too dangerous
    B. his job required high skills
    C. he wanted to save money
    D. he was not good at communicating with others
    5. We may infer from the passage that __________.
    A. the author's father lacked a sense of humor
    B. the author quite understood his father as time went on
    C. the author's father didn't love him very much
    D. the author's father was too strict with him

It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the
traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.
"Any old papers, lady?" asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say "no" until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.
"Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa."
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started
    again on my household budget.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking
at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, "Lady, are you rich?"
I looked at my shabby slipcovers. The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said, "Your cups match your saucers." Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left
after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn't said "Thank you." They didn't need to.They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers
were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job-these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals
were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how
    rich I am.

[1] What do you do to take care of the books in your library? Some collectors refuse to read the
books in their collection; so the books remain in good condition. Others buy two copies of a book: they
read one, and leave the other untouched. However, many readers must read their books, but they still want to protect and care for the volumes. Here are some tips to remember if you want your books to remain in good condition.
[2] Avoid Writing. You may have been told to write in your books, or even to underline words,
phrases, and paragraphs. But if you plan to keep the book, add it to your library, or even sell it - don't
write in the book. The ink may damage your book forever. Use a notebook to take notes or use pieces of paper. If you are required to write in your book, use a pencil, and remove the markings later.
[3] Avoid Food and Drinks. Food and drinks are things that may be dangerous to your books, so the
best way is to avoid eating or drinking while you read.
If you need to read while you eat, make sure your
fingers are clean and dry as you hold the book or turn the pages. Also, keep the book well away from the
    food and drinks.
[4] Take Care. When you handle your book, hold it with care. When you read the book, don't fold
down the corners of the pages (use a bookmark instead). Don't place your book with the book open,
face-down. You'd better use a book cover to keep your book in the best condition.
[5] Put it on the Shelf. If you want to take care of your books, keep your books on a shelf when
____________. But, also, take care that the books should be placed in an upright(竖亍钴)position.
