                                                                    Ban the Band (乐队)?
Every year, our school has a dance for all the students. It'  s a little funny seeing friends in clean shoes
and trousers or colorful   1    , instead of the usual school uniform.
Most of us think the dance is great    2     —even the teachers enjoy being there.   3     ,two weeks
ago someone said that there would be no   4     band this year—only CDs.
"I don't   5    it !" Amy cried out during the lunch break.
"Someone said the school couldn't   6     a band, and they think it'  s too noisy anyway,"added Daniel.
         "Well, I don't think it's   7     enough without a band!"declared Angela, "and I'm going to see what
    can be done."
Angela was as good as her   8   . In the afternoon she went to see the school headmaster who
agreed to give the    9    some more thought. And he suggested that one    10    for having a band was
to increase the price of each ticket from $5 to $10. Angela had to   11     out whether the students
    would like to do that.
"I need all of you to help me," she   12    to our group before school the next day. "Mr. Berry
gave me a list of all the names, and suggested we ask each one their   13    about the band and the extra
    cost."
14    the day we asked around as Angela suggested, and wrote down people'  s feeling about the
band and the cost. We were amazed how much   15     there was for the band and everyone agreed to
    pay the extra $5.
"I'  m surprised," smiled Mr. Berry, when we gave him the    16   ."I really thought that only a few
people    17    their band and that the cost would be too high.OK, Angela, your next   18     is to find
a good band and line them up for the dance."
Angela was all smiles and   19     the news to Amy and Daniel. "You're   20     ," smiled Daniel to
Angela as he thought how close they came to having a less than perfect dance.

Thirteen government officials have been punished and a man arrested for presenting false evidence to prove the highly endangered South China tiger existed in the wild.
The Shaanxi provincial government said Sunday that farmer Zhou Zhenglong had fudged some photographs for the purpose. The government had earlier claimed the photos were real.

The 54yearold farmer from Zhenping county, who claimed to have photographed the "tiger" with a digital camera on October 3 last year, was arrested for alleged fraud on Saturday, said Bai Shaokang, spokesman for the Shaanxi provincial public security bureau. The provincial forestry department has revoked(取消,收回)his 20,000yuan reward($2,915)too.
Experts believe the South China tiger is the progenitor of all the living tiger species.
Its number in the wild had fallen between 30 and 80 by 1996.Now,it is widely believed to have become extinct in the wild.
Bai said police have seized the old tiger photograph, which Zhou borrowed from a farmer in another village in September to fudge his photos.A tiger paw made of wood, which he used to create pug marks on snow, has been seized too.
Zhou had insisted that he "risked his life to take the photos of a real tiger".
Police have found the exact spot where Zhou took the photos. It is in Madaozi forest,15 km from Wencai village in Zhenping, and is 2,000 m above the sea level,Bai said."It is a small area with few tall trees not a suitable habitat for a tiger."
Police discovered that "trees" near the South China tiger in Zhou'  s photograph were just 0.8 cm in diameter. And calculations showed the "tiger" would have been only 27cm long.

If something happens that makes you feel angry, try these things to help prevent angry feelings from
    building up inside.
1)Exercise. Go for a walk, work out, or go to play a sport. Lots of research has shown that exercise
is a great way to improve your mood and decrease negative feelings.
2)Write down your thoughts and emotions. You can write things in lots of ways, for example, in a
journal or as your own poetry or song lyrics(歌词). After you'  ve written it down, you can keep it or
throw it away-it doesn'  t matter. The important thing is,writing down your thoughts and feelings can
improve how you feel. When you notice, label, and release feelings as they show up in smaller portions,
they don'  t have a chance to build up inside.
3)Think deeply or practice deep breathing.T his method is the best one among all the tips if you do
it regularly, as it'  s more of an overall stress management technique that can help you use selfcontrol
when you'  re mad. If you do this regularly, you'  ll find that anger is less likely to build up.
4)Talk about your feelings with someone you trust. Lots of times there are other emotions, such as
fear or sadness, beneath anger. Talking about them can help.
These ideas can be helpful for two reasons:
1)They help you cool down when you feel like your anger might explode. When you need to cool
down, do one or more of the activities in the list above. Think of these as alternatives(可选择的办法)
to taking an action you'  ll regret, such as shouting at someone. Some of them, like writing down
feelings, can help you release tension and begin the thinking process at the same time.
2)They help you manage anger in general. What if there'  s no immediate problem to solve-you
simply need to shift into a better mood? Sometimes when you'  re angry, and you have no better way
to manage anger although you have tried your best,y ou just need to stop dwelling on how mad you are.

    1. The passage is mainly about________.

    A. some ways that help solve immediate problems
    B. how to deal with angry feelings
    C. some kinds of anger that people often feel
    D. how to manage tension

    2. If you write down your feelings, you may________.

    A. create some poetry
    B. improve the way you feel
    C. make your mood worse
    D. discover something about yourself

    3. According to the passage, the best way for people to feel better is to________.

    A. think deeply or practice deep breathing regularly
    B. go for a walk regularly
    C. write down their thoughts and emotions
    D. have a talk with people they trust

    4. You will probably feel regretful if you________.

    A. are hurt by other people'  s anger
    B. throw away what you have written about your feelings
    C. show your anger to others
    D. find ways to comtrol anger

                                                     Move Earth-it's no science fiction
LONDON-Scientists have found an unusual way to prevent our planet from overheating:move it to
a cooler spot. All you have to do is send a few comets(彗星)in the direction of Earth, and its orbit will
be changed. Our world will then be sent spinning into a safer,c older part of the solar system.
This idea for improving our climate comes from a group of US National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) engineers and American astronomers. They say their plan could add another
six billion years to the useful lifetime of our planet-effectively doubling its working life.
The plan put forward by Dr. Laughlin, and his colleagues Don Korycansky and Fred Adams, needs
carefully directing a comet or asteroid so that it passes close by our planet and sends some of its
    gravitational energy to Earth.
"Earth's orbital speed would increase as a result and we would move to a higher orbit away from
    the Sun,"Laughlin said.
Engineers would then direct their comet so that it passed close to Jupiter or Saturn. The comet
would pick up energy from one of these giant planets. Later its orbit would bring it back to Earth, and
    the process would be repeated.
In the short term, the plan provides an ideal way to global warming, although the team was actually
concerned with a much greater danger. The sun is certain to heat up in about a billion years and so
"seriously compromise" our biosphere(生物圈)-by cooking us.
That'  s why the group decided to try to save Earth.
The plan has one or two worrying aspects, however. For a start, space engineers would have to
be very careful about how they directed their asteroid or comet towards Earth. The smallest
miscalculation(误算)in orbit could fire it straight at Earth-with deadly consequences.
There is also the question of the Moon. As the current issue of Scientific American magazine
points out,  if Earth was pushed out of its current position it is "most likely the Moon would be
stripped away from Earth," it states. This would greatly change our planet'  s climate.

    1. What makes the scientists plan to move Earth?
    A. A few comets are moving to the direction of Earth.
    B. Earth'  s working life is coming to an end soon.
    C. Earth will become too hot for mankind to keep alive.
    D. The moon is moving farther and farther away from Earth.

    2. If the plan is successful,Earth will have a working life of________years.

    A. 12 billion
    B. 6 billion
    C. 18 billion
    D. 24 billion

    3. What serious problems might the plan cause according to the passage?

    A. The comet might hit Earth and man might lose the moon.
    B. Earth might be moved too far away and man might be frozen to death.
    C. The comet might hit Jupiter or Saturn and never return to Earth.
    D. Earth'  s working life might be greatly shortened.

    4. What does the underlined word "compromise" mean?
    A. provide
    B. benefit
    C. share
    D. endanger

We have known for some time that college students coming from Japan and Taiwan to study in the
United States do better than their American peers(同龄人)in maths and science. These general
impressions of Asian superiority(优势)in mathematics and science were proved by studies were made
in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
In these studies, the average score of American kindergarteners was below those from Japan. In first
grade the difference increased, and by fifth grade it was very large. Moreover, 60 fifth grade classes in
Japan,  Taiwan, and the United States were compared in mathematics. The average score of the highest
scoring American classroom was below that of all the Japanese classrooms and all but one of the Chinese classrooms.
Why is this so? Are the Asian students born smarter? A series of studies in 1986 and 1987 raised
these questions, and their findings seem to point the American and Asian school systems have certain
features in common. But the differences are striking. Test scores on nationwide examinations determine
entry into high school and college in both Japan and Taiwan, but not in the United States. Career paths
too are more closely linked to educational achievements in Japan and Taiwan. As a result, far more
pressure is given to even very young children to study hard and succeed in school in both Japan and
Taiwan than those in the United States.
These are also striking differences in classroom instruction. By fifth grade, for example,t he U. S.
children were observed to spend an average of only 19.6 hours per week in academic activities in
comparison with the Taiwanese and Japanese children of 40.4 and 32.6 hours per week, respectively.
What is more, the U. S.children spent less of their academic time on mathematics. By fifth grade ,the
    U. S.classrooms averaged 3.4 hours  per week on maths compared to 11.4 hours in Taiwan and 7.6
    hours in Japan.

    1. The primary purpose of this passage is to ________.

    A. show Asian superiority in maths and science to the American students
    B. compare the American educational practices with those of Asians
    C. warn the American government of the educational problems
    D. criticize the American educational system

    2. Asian students in the U. S.do better in maths and science than their American peers because________.

    A. Americans are less interested in maths and science than Asians
    B. Asian students are cleverer than the American children
    C. Asian students spend more time in academic activities
    D. All of the above

    3. Which of the following is NOT one of the differences between the American and the Asian school
    systems? ________
    A. Entrance into high school does not depend on test scores on national exams in the U. S..
    B. Academic achievements are more closely related to jobhunting in Asian countries.
    C. Children start kindergarten earlier in Asian countries than in the United States.
    D. Asian students pay more attention to classroom activities than Americans.

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would
admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, "My
spoken English is poor." __1__ I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their
    problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. __2__
However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow
you as long as you use the words that you know.
__3__Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous.
Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in
writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them
correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to
someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong
word or tense, but it doesn'  t matter. __4__
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears!
All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of
actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking
opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. __5__

    A. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
    B. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.
    C. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.
    D. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
    E. However, their spoken English does not have to remain "poor"!
    F. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.
    G. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.
