It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was
beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently.
My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him. I was
only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same. I'm so glad I did.
On the road to the harbor we could see the terrible destruction on the coast, but the harbor itself was
in fairly good shape. After all, it was protected by the arms of a bay that had only one tiny channel to the
sea. As we got on board, we noticed two big humps(脊背) in the distance.
On approaching them, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn't believe it-there
aren't any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them across the ocean in the bay, in
which the still water was so badly polluted that nothing could survive.
The little baby whale-actually as big as our boat-was obviously stuck and could not move. The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making big whirlpools(漩涡) and waves. "She's trying to
help her baby, but on the wrong side," my father said. At this point, my father moved our boat in a
semicircle to the other side and, heading the boat toward the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our
several gentle pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right
beside its mum. They struggled in their desperate attempts to escape but missed the exit and started
heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay
channel. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe-and
to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes. Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight
form the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the distance.
In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with those wonder animals for
almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. Nearly four decades later, I
still look back fondly to that golden day at sea.

    3. The mother whale failed to help her baby because _______________.
    A. she had stayed in the polluted water for too long
    B. the whirlpools she had made were not big enough

  •      Students across China, studying in the fields of engineering, science and technology, are developing a
range of inventions that they hope will one day be marketable. Here are three examples from the minds of
    these inventors.
Foot-controlled mouse is a new kind of mouse. It is controlled by the feet instead of the hands, to help
the disabled when they surf the Internet. It looks like a pair of blue slippers. When users press the slippers with their forefeet, they are clicking the left mouse button; when people press with their heels, they are
clicking the right mouse button; when they roll their feet over the slippers, they can view web pages.
Dirty water filter(过滤器) can make dirty water drinkable, which is a good way to solve the lack of
water and also does good to the environment. There are two main parts: the drive zone to pump water
and the material zone to reduce harmful things. Rain and fish tank water can be cleaned in the material
zone. Someone told us that water was sent by air to Wenchuan. If they had sent water-purifying plant
instead, people could have had more water after the earthquake.
Transformer car is named Tranfus. By changing the size of tyres and the structure of a car, it can
become a motorbike or a luggage carrier. The name Tranfus is short for "transforming for us" . Tranfus
can change into a luggage carrier, and users could walk with it. But its inventor doesn't think Tranfus will
be on the market soon as some companies like it, but none are willing to invest.
    1. Who will be most likely to use the foot-controlled mouse?
    A. Those who are lazy.
    B. Those who are left-handed.
    C. Those who have disability in hands.
    D. Those who are poor in study.
    2. According to the passage we can infer the dirty water filter _____________.
    A. has been on the market
    B. is popular with young people
    C. is only designed for the people in the earthquake
    D. can be useful when some kinds of natural disasters happen
    3. Tranfus can't be on the market soon because ______________.
    A. there are no companies showing interest in it
    B. there are no companies offering to invest in it
    C. it is only a crazy idea and has no scientific theory to support it
    D. it is too small to be a car and too big to be a luggage carrier
  •      Children's fighting over the same toy is a problem that all parents or childcare providers face. If one
child wants to play the Play Station, all the other children are suddenly interested in doing the same thing
quickly abandoning whatever has previously held their attention. This is human nature playing itself out in
children. People often think that what someone else has or is doing is more desirable than what they have
or are doing. They will abandon their own wish to participate in the wish of another so that they do not
lose something better. Children start this at a young age.
Parents and childcare workers often see the children fighting for rights to one toy rather than being
satisfied with playing with something else. The best way to help children overcome this human habit is to
teach them to consider others more important than themselves. They need to respect other people. So if
Johnny wants to use the Play Station unbroken, then the other children should not fight to take it from
him. Johnny should also care about the other children and render the controller to them in a fair amount
    of time.
If a child is always grabbing everything for himself, then there is a problem that needs working out. If
a child is always dissatisfied with what he has and wants what the other child has, then that needs to be
talked about. Parents can use these fights over toys to help their children understand how to treat others
right. This does not always mean punishment. Teach the child the way that he should go and he will not
depart from it. Instruct him wisely. Have the child apologize to the other child if he has infringed upon
(侵犯) his rights. Teach love, forgiveness, self-control, and kindness. Practice this in your life and the
child will learn that this is the better way and live accordingly. Next time all the children are fighting for the
same toy, use it as an object lesson to teach them these things.
    1. Which saying can best describe children's fighting for the same toy?
    A. Losers are always in the wrong.
    B. You cannot eat your cake and have it.
    C. Nothing is impossible to a willing mind.
    D. The grass is always greener on the other side.
    2. When children are fighting for one toy, parents or childcare workers can ______________.
    A. impress on them the importance of rules
    B. teach them to think more of other people
    C. sit back and let them solve their own problem
    D. guide them to solve their problem through teamwork
    3. Which of the following can replace the underlined word "render"?
    A. show
    B. borrow
    C. give
    D. throw
    4. What would be the best title for the passage?
    A. What are children's favorite toys?
    B. When do children fight over the same toy?
    C. Why do children like to fight over the same toy?
    D. How to solve children's fight over the same toy?
  •      The wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29 has focused the world's
    attention on the UK.
In Britain, there is a constant debate about the connection of the royal family with modern British
society. However, Windsor (the family name of the British Royal Family) and Middleton have been seen
to represent a more modern, forward-looking nation.
Nigel Baker, the British ambassador to Bolivia, believes that the royal wedding is "about modern
Britain". "The estimated 2 billion spectators across the world will see that Britain is one of the most
culturally and ethnically(种族上)various nations in the world, home to 270 nationalities speaking 300
different languages, founded on tolerance and respect for difference," wrote Baker on his blog.
According to Baker, the wedding could help viewers to see "why Britain is one of the most dynamic
(有活力的)and creative countries in the world": The television on which most people watched the event
was invented by John Logie Baird, a Briton, and the World Wide Web that broadcast the event to
millions more was invented by another Briton, Tim Berners-Lee.
The guests who attended the wedding ceremony gave more than a few clues as to the nature of
modern Britain. David and Victoria Beckham represent Britain's obsession(着迷)with football and
    celebrity.
Leaders from different religious backgrounds supported Baker's comments on the multicultural nature
    of modern British society.
Before the wedding, David Elliott, arts director of the British Council China, agreed that the wedding
would be a showcase for modern Britain: "I think, and hope, that it (modern British influence) would be
values like openness, multiculturalism, creativity, sense of humor and the traditional British sense of fair
    play," he said.
Furthermore, events such as the Olympics in London in 2012 may also increase people's sense of
    Britishness.
According to a poll published in Daily Telegraph, more than a third of people in the UK admitted they
felt "very British" when watching the Olympics.
    1. What is the main point of the article?
    A. To introduce Prince William's wedding arrangements in detail.
    B. To comment on the significance of the royal wedding.
    C. To question the connection of the royal family in modern British society.
    D. To explain why the royal wedding is linked with the 2012 Olympics.
    2. What can be concluded from the article?
    A. Some say that the royal wedding is a reflection on modern Britain.
    B. Some think the royal wedding only shows Britain's multiculturalism and sense of fair play.
    C. About 2 billion people across the world will see the wedding ceremony online.
    D. Britons are obsessed with football due to the influence of David Beckham.
    3. Why is the inventor of the World Wide Web mentioned?
    A. To inform readers about some well-known British inventors.
    B. To point to the importance of the World Wide Web for the wedding.
    C. In support of the idea that Britain is a nation of creative and dynamic people.
    D. To encourage people to watch the wedding on the Internet.
    4. According to the article, both the 2012 Olympics and the royal wedding         .
    A. have increased the British sense of national identity
    B. have promoted traditional British values
    C. represent a more modern Britain
    D. have encouraged the interest of Britons in Football

As you know, Zhang Fei and I used to be good friend. However, on one day, Zhang Fei read my
private letter in secret and tell others what was written in it. Knowing this, I was extreme angry. I told
her I would not be his friend any more. Hearing whatIsaid, Zhang felt very surprised and no longer
stayed with me. Facing with this, I felt very upset. I am much angry with her improper behaviour, but I
can't forget the wonderful time that I stayed with her. I wonder whether I should forgive her. And I'm
afraid if I offer to make friends with her, she will refuse me. How should I do?
