I wear what I feel is comfortable and convenient. Decades ago, my 10-year-old Italian nephew
asked me for jeans from Canada when I visited.
Upon seeing them, he claimed they were not Levis. "What does Levis mean?" I asked naively.
Later, I was preparing to come to China when my Sichuan friend ordered jeans for her daughter.
"You mean Levis, I guess?" "No, Benetton," she said.
Living in China I realize the effect brands have on people here. Once I bought a pair of sandals
because I needed sandals. Many people told me, "Wow! You wear them? You have money!" I didn't
know why they thought 150-yuan ($22) sandals were for wealthy people. I had never heard that brand
name (which I can't remember) before.
While visiting my family in Canada, we were talking about fake products(假冒商品) in China. As a
writer, I don't accept that readers pirate(盗版) my books and I would consider myself a thief if I ever
buy them. A young relative asked, "What about your purse?"
"What's the problem with my purse?" I countered.
"It's a Yves Saint-Laurent; do you mean you paid the full price?"
"How can you think I bought a YSL? I bought it because of size, color and price."
She picked up the purse and pointed to the steel YSL on it. Believe it or not, I had not noticed it till
    then.
When Pearl Market used to sell watches, I happened to need one and went there for the large
choice they offered. What I wanted was a watch to see the time, I insisted.
They had no Chinese brands, only Cartier, Citizen, Seiko, Rolex. Having refused several ming pai
copies, I was leaving without buying when I saw a black one.
"Diesel, what a strange name for a watch," I thought. Wasn't diesel something that went into a gas
tank? The business deal went quickly; I offered 35 yuan and left with the watch.
    1. What's the author's attitude towards fake products?
    A. He thinks they are of good quality.
    B. He supports fake products.
    C. He believes they are symbols of status.
    D. He is strongly against fake products.
    2. Why did the author go to Pearl Market to buy a watch?
    A. Because the watches here were cheaper.
    B. Because there were many famous brands.
    C. Because he might make a better choice here.
    D. Because he wanted to buy a fake watch.
    3. What point does the author want to make in the passage?
    A. Brands don't always tell the truth.
    B. Fake products should be banned.
    C. Following fashion makes much sense.
    D. True beauty comes from one's actions.
  •      Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut highway crashes.
Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using
a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think
that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation(基金会) for Traffic Safety in Washington
D.C. is planning to repeat Japan's success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and
other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce
    highway crashes.
Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents,
according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas
where speed-related hazards are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average
speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used
    to seeing the painted bars.
Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed
and the number of traffic accidents.
    1. The passage mainly discusses ________.
    A. a new way of highway speed control
    B. a new pattern for painting highways
    C. a new way of training drivers
    D. a new type of optical illusion
    2. The underlined word "hazards" probably means ________.
    A. accidents
    B. traffic jams
    C. dangers
    D. cases
    3. The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former ________.
    A. can keep drivers awake
    B. can cut road accidents in half
    C. will look more attractive
    D. will have a longer effect on driv
  •      Babies are born yogis. Once we were all able to pull our toes up by our ears and laugh about it.
Then we aged, got injured, and began carrying stress in our shoulders and back. In short, we lost our
    balance.
Yoga(瑜伽) is an ancient practice that helps create a sense of union in body, mind, and spirit. It brings us balance. I was seriously out of balance when I started practicing yoga in 1999. I had plantar fascitis in
both feet, and my doctor had warned me against all the things I loved to do: walking, hiking, and playing
tennis. I was desperate for exercise. Yoga became my salvation(救星) and even enhanced my other
fitness activities. I practice yoga at least twice a week, but I consider yoga to be part of my daily life
because after a while you no longer just practice yoga-you love it.
Yoga becomes part of your physical life. Your body grows stronger, more toned, and more flexible
as you move from one pose to the other. I spent a week in Mexico at a yoga retreat, and it was the first
vacation on which I lost weight. "Rather than building muscle, yoga builds muscle tone," says Shakta
Kaur Khalsa, author of the K.I.S.S. Guide to Yoga. "Because yoga helps maintain a balanced
metabolism (新陈代谢), it also helps to regulate weight. Additionally, yoga stretches muscles lengthwise,
causing fat to be removed around the cells." I do yoga poses throughout the day. After hours at my
computer, I stretch my stiff shoulders and arms. When I need a boost of energy, I do energizing poses.
When I am feeling exhausted at the end of the day, I do restorative poses.
Yoga becomes part of your mental life. Yoga teaches you to focus on breathing while you hold the
poses. This attention to breath is calming; it dissolves stress and anxiety. I use yogic breathing on the
tennis courts, in the dentist's chair, and in traffic jams. You should always leave a yoga practice feeling
energized, not tired. If you feel tired after yoga, it means you spent the time "fighting" yourself, trying to
force yourself into poses. In yoga, you "surrender" to the pose by letting go of the tension.
Yoga becomes part of your spiritual life. Yoga is practiced by people from all religions; it is not
restricted to any religious group. Yoga teaches "right" living in how we deal with ourselves and others.
As I work on a difficult pose, I learn patience, forgiveness, and the value of gentleness. Yoga advocates
proper eating, but you don't have to be a vegetarian to practice yoga.
    1. What would be the best title for this passage?
    A. What Yoga is
    B. How I Do Yoga Poses
    C. The Benefits of Yoga
    D. The Varieties of Yoga
    2. People feel tired after yoga because __________.
    A. they consume energy in practicing yoga
    B. they respond well to yoga poses
    C. they spend too much time on yoga
    D. they push themselves to do yoga poses
    3. If this passage continues, what will the writer most probably write about in the next paragraph?
    A. Yoga as a means to keep fit.
    B. Different yoga poses.
    C. Popularity of yoga all over the world.
    D. Encouraging people to do yoga.

When I was a child, my mom pushed me to studying hard, hoping I could get a chance to go
to college. I experience pressure for the first time. I did that my mom expected because I didn't
want to make her disappointing. I was born in a poor peasants family, but I really knew life was
not easy. All the things my mother did was the result of her hope that I could lead better life in the
future. As the saying goes, "no pains, no gains." I was finally able to realize my mother's dream
and had a chance to go to college. Thanks to my mother's push and the pressure, I made them.
Now, I no longer think pressure is a worse thing.
