Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months
old.Yet doctors in  the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.
Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if
her mother does something the baby likes.A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please
her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human
    beings.
One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder
on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby
wasborn, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.
The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way.If the baby moved his mouth the other way,he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.
Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in
    their children.
Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted
to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their
children's activites and did not interfere unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language
development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of
    depression.
The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not
suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and
    understanding what they hear.
These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The
researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their
children.Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

1.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences the intelligence
         development in babies?

    B.Mother's sensitivity
    C.Their peers (同龄人).
    D.Education before birth.

2.What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?

A.To prove that babies can learn before they are born.
B.To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.
C.To show mothers can strongly influence the intelligence developent in their babies.
D.To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies' language skills.

3.Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?

A.The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.
B.The children of women who did not suffer from depression.
C.The children of depressed but caring mothers.
    D.Children with high communication abilities.

4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth.
B.Scientific findings about how the environment has an effect on babies'intelligence.
C.A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are born or six months old.
D.Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies.

He could have been president of Israel-or played the violin at Carnegie Hall, but he was too busy
thinking-thinking on God,love and the meaning of life.
Fifty years after his death, his shock (蓬乱) of white hair and hanging moustache still symbolize genius.Einstein remains the leading scientist of the modern time.Looking back 2,400 years, only Newton,Galileo
    and Aristotle were his equals.
Around the world, universities and academies are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Einstein's
"miracle year" when he published five scientific papers in 1905 that basically changed our grasp of space,
time, light and matter.Only he could top himself about ten years later with his theory of relativity.
Born in the age of horsedrawn carriages, his ideas launched a technological revolution that has made
more change in a century than in the previous two thousand years.Computers, satellites, telecommunication,
lasers, television and nuclear power all owe their invention to ways in which Einstein exposed a stranger and more complicated reality under the world.
He escaped Hitler's Germany and devoted the rest of his life to human rights and peace with an
authority (当局) unmatched by any scientist today,or even most politicians and religious leaders. He spoke out against fascism and racial prejudice. His FBI (美国联邦调查局) file ran 1,400 pages.
His letters expose a disorderly personal life-married twice and indifferent toward his children while
absorbed in physics.Yet he charmed lovers and admirers with poetry and sailboat outings.Friends and
neighbors fiercely protected his privacy (隐私).

1.The first paragraph implies that Einstein________.

A.had run for president before he worked at his research

C.Rough untidy mass of white hair and hanging moustache, with an image of a thinker.
D.Black long hair and moustache, with an air of a painter.

    3.Why was 1905 called Einstein's "miracle year"?

A.Because he topped himself with the theory of relativity.
B.Because he made important discoveries of space, time, light and matter.
C.Because he published five papers on his theory of relativity.
D.Because he wrote five important articles to help people better understand space, time, light and matter.

4.Which of the following is NOT true about Einstein according to the passage?

A.He was so busy with the physical research that he showed no interest in politics.
B.He tried to amuse his admirers and friends in his spare time.

Keeping a full social calendar may help protect you from dementia (痴呆),researchers said on
Monday.Socially active people who were not easily stressed had a 50 percent lower risk of developing
dementia compared with men and women who were isolated and prone to distress, they reported in the
    journal Neurology.
"In the past, studies have shown that chronic distress (长期抑郁) can affect parts of the brain, possibly
leading to dementia," HuiXin Wang of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, who led the study, said in a
statement."But our findings suggest that having a calm and outgoing personality in combination with a
socially active lifestyle may decrease the risk of developing dementia even further."
An estimated 24 million people worldwide have memory loss, problems with direction and other
symptoms that signal Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.Researchers believe the number of
people with dementia may quadruple (变为四倍) by 2050,underlining the importance of better
    understanding the condition.
The Swedish study involved 506 elderly people who did not have dementia when first examined. The
volunteers were given questionnaires about their personality traits and lifestyles and then tracked for six
years.Over that time,144 people developed dementia with more socially active and less stressed men and women 50 percent less likely to be diagnosed with the condition.
"The good news is,lifestyle factors can be modified as opposed to genetic factors which cannot be
controlled," Wang said."But these are early results,so how exactly mental attitude influences risk for
    dementia is not clear."

    1.Study suggests that________.

A.women have a 50 percent lower risk of developing dementia than men
B.50 percent of elderly people have the risk of developing dementia
C.people with active lifestyles will never develop dementia

    A.About 1.8 million
    B.About 24 million

    D.About 96 million

3.It can be inferred that________could be a good way to decrease the risk of developing dementia.

A.living alone in a deserted island
    B.modifying genetic factors
    C.changing lifestyles
    D.getting away from activities

4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.It is not clear whether mental attitude influences the risk of developing dementia.
B.The people involved in the Swedish study are never diagnosed with dementia.
C.Memory loss, direction confusion could be the symptoms of dementia.
D.The number of people with calm and outgoing personality is growing.

A few years ago when my daughter was about two years old,I went through a difficult time.My
marriage was in trouble,I was pregnant (怀孕的) and not particularly well and I didn't have much money.
Looking back I think I was also a bit depressed, but I had to get on with taking care of my daughter the
    best I could.
One day I thought I would take my daughter to the park for a nice day as she liked there, and I thought it was a nice thing to do.I decided to walk because the bus was expensive,so it took us a long time to get
there. When we finally got there, immediately my daughter began to cry.She was cold, she was thirsty, and
she wanted to go home.To be honest,I had not prepared properly.I didn't even have any money to buy a

concerned-he even offered me all his change! The kindness of this stranger to a stranger like me really

You wake up in the morning, the day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been
looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing (令人沮丧的) tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his
morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to.Are you still in a wonderful mood?Impossible!
Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think,
but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.
Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to
offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad.No wonder they can hardly win others' pity or
    respect.
When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger (匕首) of a negative person is put in you,you have the heavy feeling that all
    in all,brings you down.
Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a coworker,or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible.Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but all this does is to lower you to that same negative level and they
won't feel ashamed of themselves about that.
Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the
start of the day can cling to (附着) you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and
steals your happiness.Life is too short to feel negative.Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as
    possible.
