I have been using the Internet since I was five years old, when my dad first sat me down in front of our
computer and connected me to the World Wide Web.
I've always felt like a master of the Internet world. AOL Instant Messaging, MSN, Gmail, Facebook, Myspace - I've got it all under control. I thought there was nothing more to the Internet besides checking
my e-mail and wasting my time until I found out about electronic commerce (e-commerce): business on
the Internet. Do Amazon.com, Yahoo.com, or monster.com mean anything to you?
My friends often said they got cheap textbooks on Amazon.com, or had a good deal on Steve Madden boots that were on sale at SteveMadden.com. Unfortunately for me, I went on with my "e-commerce-less" Web-surfing, unaware of all the deals I was missing out on.
That is, of course, until my sister finally sold the idea to me.
"Why are all these packages arriving in the mail for you, Katy?" I asked her one day. Strange envelopes had been put on our doorstep for weeks now, each one always addressed to my sister; and we all know
little sisters should never be getting more mail than their older siblings (兄弟姐妹)!
"Oh, it's the stuff I ordered online!" she answered. I watched as she opened item after item. There was
no way our parents were letting her spend that much money - online or off!
"How much did all of this cost?"
"Oh, only about $15 in all!" She said excitedly. "Everything on eBay is on sale! It's better than going to
    the mall."
I felt as if my whole life, there had been a giant store in my backyard that I had never known about.
That week, I ordered a used Spanish textbook for 10 percent of the publisher's price. A few days later,
I bought an iPod protector and a book or two from the wonderful eBay.com.

    1. From the first three paragraphs we can conclude that the author _____.

    A. had no experience using computers
    B. thought surfing the Internet was a waste of time
    C. only used the Internet to check e-mails
    D. had no idea of what e-commerce is

    2. The writer didn't find out about e-commerce until _____.

    A. she stopped Web-surfing
    B. her friends told her about the online deals they made
    C. she visited a giant store in her backyard
    D. her sister explained the packages she got by mail

    3.  We can infer from the last paragraph that _____.

    A. the author has begun to enjoy online shopping
    B. the author loves the big store in her backyard
    C. the author feels she is a true master of the Internet
    D. the author never enjoyed shopping that much

    4. Which of the following could be the best title for the article?

    A. My favorite activity - the Internet
    B. Ordering goods on the Internet
    C. A whole new world on the Internet
    D. Don't waste time on the Internet

    5. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?

    A. Katy is better at computer than the writer.
    B. Their parents often offer them a lot of money to shop.
    C. The writer was angry with her sister for her behavior.
    D. The things Katy bought on line are much cheaper than in shops.

Shahla Ghannadian had entrusted(委托) her 2,000-dollar Louis Vuitton handbag and its precious

couple had traveled from Toronto to San Francisco for a daughter's wedding.
The purse contained a Cartier watch, cash, and jewelry worn by the mother and the bride at the

The plan: turn Mars into a blue world with streams and green fields, and then fill it with creatures from
    the earth.
This idea may sound like something from a science fiction, but it is actually being taken seriously by
    many researchers.
This suggests the future for the "red planet" will be the main topic for discussion at an international
conference hosted by NASA this Week. Leading researchers as well as science fiction writers will attend
the event. It comes as NASA(美国宇航局) is preparing a multi-billion-dollar Mars research programme.
"Turning Mars into a little earth has long been a topic in science fiction," said Dr. Michael Meyer,
NAS A's senior scientist. "Now, with scientists exploring the reality, we can ask what are the real
    possibilities of changing Mars."
Most scientists agree that Mars could be turned into a little earth, although much time and money
would be needed to achieve this goal. But many experts are shocked by the idea.
"We are destroying our own world at an unbelievable speed and now we are talking about ruining
another planet," said Paul Murdin from the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, UK.
Over the past months, scientists have become increasingly confident they will find Martian life forms.
Europe and America's robot explorers have found the proof that water, mixed with soil, exists in large
    amounts on the planet.
In addition, two different groups of scientists announced on March 28 that they had found signs of
methane(甲烷) in the Martian atmosphere, the gas is a waste product of living creatures and could be
produced by microbes(微生物)living in the red planet's soil.
But scientists such as Dr. Lisa Pratt, a biologist at Indiana University, say that these microbes will be
put in danger by the little earth project.
"Before we have even discovered if there is life on Mars, we are talking about carrying out projects
that would destroy all these native life forms, all the strange microbes that we hope to find buried in the
    soil," said Dr. Pratt.
Monica Grady, a planetary scientist at the Natural History Museum, London, shares this view. "We
cannot risk starting a global experiment that would wipe out the precious information we are looking for,"
she said. "This is just wrong".

    A. has been made
    B. will be put into practice
    C. has been given up
    D. is being argued about

    2. According to the passage, besides scientists, _____are also interested in the future of Mars.

    A. the public
    B. science fiction writers
    C. the governments of many countries
    D. news reporters

        that _______

    on Mars.
    A. microbes may exist
    B. there may be aliens
    C. water exists

    4. Those who are against the plan are worried that it will ________________.

America's No.1 health problem? A report published by the American Institute of Stress claims the
biggest threat to health today is neither cancer nor AIDS. The report says: "It has been estimated that
75-90 percent of all visits to physicians (内科医生) are for stress related problems
    ."
It is no exaggeration to say that people today are being attacked by stress. According to the
National Consumers League, "Work is the top source of stress for adults who have problems and stress
in their lives (39%), followed by family (30%). Other sources include health (10%), concern about the
economy (9%) and concern about international conflict and terrorism (4%)."
However, stress is hardly unique to the United States. A British survey in 2005 estimated that "over
half a million individuals in Britain believed in 2004 that they were experiencing work-related stress at a
level that was making them ill." As a result of "work-related stress, depression or anxiety," there are "an
estimated thirteen and a half million reported lost working days per year in Britain."
The picture is no less bleak (荒凉的) in mainland Europe. According to the European Agency for
Safety and Health at Work, "work-related stress has been shown to affect millions of European workers
across all types of employment sectors." One survey revealed that there are "about 41 million workers
affected by work-related stress each year."
